The Relationship between Workplace Bullying Victimization and Displaced Aggression: The Mediating Effects of Perceived Organizational Injustice and State Anger (20, 30대의 직장 내 괴롭힘 피해경험과 전위된 공격성 간의 관계: 지각된 조직불공정성과 상태분노의 이중매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between workplace bullying victimization and displaced aggression, along with the mediating effects of perceived organizational injustice and state anger. Self-reported data of 268 employees were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and Process macro. When applying the standard suggested by Leymann(1996), which defines workplace bullying victims as those who experience at least one negative act, on a weekly basis, for more than 6 months, the bullying victimization prevalence rate was 77.2%. Furthermore, although workplace bullying victimization did not directly predict displaced aggression, it significantly predicted perceived organizational injustice and state anger. Both mediators significantly predicted displaced aggression. The mediating effect of bullying victimization on displaced aggression through perceived organizational injustice and state anger subsequently was also significant. This study has its significance in that it thoroughly investigated the current state of workplace bullying victimization among people in their 20s and 30s, and helps better understand the relationship between workplace bullying victimization and displaced aggression.

The relationship of trait anger and social avoidance with workplace bullying victimization among male and female office workers: The moderating effects of organizational climate (남녀 사무직 직장인의 특성분노, 사회적 회피, 직장 내 괴롭힘 피해 간 관계: 조직 분위기의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • Workplace bullying is becoming one of social issues. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the contextual variables(communication climate, social climate) moderate the relations between the individual variables(trait anger, social avoidance) and workplace bullying victimization. The self-report data of 207 office workers(115 men, 92 women) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do was analyzed. The results of hierarchical regression indicate that trait anger positively predicted men's workplace bullying victimization only when social climate is bad. Social avoidance positively predicted men's bullying victimization only when communication climate is good. There was no moderating effect of the contextual variables among women. Trait anger positively predicted women's workplace bullying victimization only when considering communication climate as a contextual variable. Social avoidance has no significant effect on women's workplace bullying victimization. However, both communication climate and social climate negatively predicted women's victimization. The implications and suggestions for prevention and intervention of workplace bullying were discussed.

  • People differ greatly in their capacity to persist in the face of challenges. Despite significant research, relatively little is known about cognitive factors that might be involved in perseverance. Building upon human threat-management mechanism, we predicted that perseverant people would be characterized by reduced sensitivity (i.e., longer detection latency) to threat cues. Our data from 5,898 job applicants showed that highly perseverant individuals required more time to correctly identify anger in faces, regardless of stimulus type (dynamic or static computer-morphed faces). Such individual differences were not observed in response to other facial expressions (happiness, sadness), and the effect was independent of gender, dispositional anxiety, or conscientiousness. Discussions were centered on the potential role of threat sensitivity in effortful pursuit of goals.

Nurses' Experience of Incivility in General Hospitals (간호사들이 근무지에서 경험하는 무례함(incivility)에 대한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was done to describe nurses' experience of incivility in hospitals and to consider nurses' work environment. Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi' phenomenological analysis methodology. Participants were seven experienced clinical nurses working on a general ward (2 nurses), or in an intensive care unit (2 nurses), emergency room (2 nurses), or operating room (1 nurse). Results: The incivility that nurses experienced was categorized as follows: 'being afflicted as a weak person', 'being treated as less than a professional', 'being overwhelmed by shock and anger', 'experiencing an untenable situation', 'struggling to survive', and 'pursuing professional growth'. Conclusion: Behavior guidelines should be developed to reduce incivility, and incivility cases should be continuously monitored by the nursing department. Also, to handle incivility problems in clinical nursing areas, a reporting and counseling system and education programs are needed.

MMPI of Out-Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (과민성 대장증후군 내원환자의 MMPI 군집분석)

  • In this cluster analysis of out-patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) we described the psychological features and personality patterns of these patients. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was administered to 29 IBS patients who received treatment in the gastroenterology department of Ajou University Hospital to produce individual profiles for each patient. The 29 profiles with 13 standard scales, 15 content scales and 11 personality scales were subjected to cluster analysis resulting in three clusters of the original sample. Titles used to describe the psychological features and personality patterns seen in the three clusters included : (1) depression and anxiety : (2) somatization and denial of affect ; (3) anger overcontrol. Future studies on the treatment of IBS patients may well consider these features, as IBS patients have different psychological patterns.

  • The purpose of this investigation is to seek the concepts of the Nature and the Emotion in the Sasang Constitutional Medicine. The results summerized as following. 1. When feelings like joy, anger, sorrow and happiness are kept in heart this state is the Nature. When they are expressed this state is the Emotion. In this point Confucianism and the Sasang Constitutional Medicine are same each other. 2. The Nature and Emotion of Confucianism are the psychic concepts. But the Nature and Emotion of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine are the psychosomatic concepts. 3. QI(氣) of joy, anger, sorrow and happiness, each of them share with qi(氣) of the Nature and Emotion. Qi(氣) of the Nature and Emotion directly influence the formation of Sasang Constitution, physiological and pathological state. As mentioned above, though the Nature and Emotion of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine come from Confucianism they are used the more opened conception.

The Expression of Negative Emotions During Children's Pretend Play (유아의 상상놀이에서 부정적 정서 표현에 대한 연구)

  • This study investigated the extent to which negative emotions were portrayed, the ways in which children communicated about negative emotions, and to whom negative emotions were attributed during pretend play. The themes in which negative emotions were embedded were examined. Thirty 4- and 5-year-olds, each paired with a self-chosen peer, were observed and videotaped during a 20-minute play session. Observations presented the following conclusions: Anger and fear were the most frequently occurring negative emotions. Children communicated about negative feelings through emotion action labels and gesture. Children attributed a large proportion of their emotional portrayals to themselves and to play objects. Expression of affective themes embedded in pretend play included anger, fear, sadness, and pain.

  • Formant structure of speech associated with five different emotions (anger, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness) was analysed. Acoustic separability of vowels (or emotions) associated with a specific emotion (or vowel) was estimated using F-ratio. According to the results, neutral showed the highest separability of vowels followed by anger, happiness, fear, and sadness in descending order. Vowel /A/ showed the highest separability of emotions followed by /U/, /O/, /I/ and /E/ in descending order. The acoustic results were interpreted and explained in the context of previous articulatory and perceptual studies. Suggestions for the performance improvement of an automatic emotion recognition system and automatic speech recognition system were made.
