End milling is available for machining the variable shape of products and has brrn widely applied in many Manufacturing industries. The surface finish of machined parts determines quality and functionality of products. Surface roughness causes friction, noise, fracture, glossiness and seizure, so many research had been performed to precisely. In particular an experimental analysis was carried out to investigate the influence ofsurface roughness on the fractal dimension. This parameter was assumed to contain not only information of roughness but also extra meaning. Experiments which were performed under various cutting conditions to compare fractal dimension with surface roughness R /sab a/ show fractal dimension to be useful parameter for determining of roughness.
Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of fractal analysis for diagnosis of periodontitis. Materials and Methods : Each 30 cases of periapical films of male mandibular molar were selected in normal group and patient group which had complete furcation involvement. They were digitized at 300 dpi, 256 gray levels and saved with gif format. Rectangular ROIs (10×20 pixel) were selected at furcation, interdental crest, and interdental middle 1/3 area. Fractal dimensions were calculated three times at each area by mass radius method and were determined using a mean of three measurements. We compared fractal dimensions at furcation and interdental crest area of normal group with those of patient group. And then we compared ratio of fractal dimensions at furcation area, interdental crest area to interdental middle 1/3 area. Results: Fractal dimension at interdental crest area of normal group was 1.979±0.018 and that of patient group 1.971±0.012 (p>0.05). Fractal dimension at furcation area of normal group was 1.986±0.024 and that of patient group 1.974±0.015 (p<0.05). The ratio of fractal dimension at interdental crest area to interdental middle 1/3 of normal group was 1.003±0.015 and that of patient group 0.993±0.018 (p<0.05). The ratio of fractal dimension at furcation area to interdental middle 1/3 of normal group was 1.006±0.018 and that of patient group 0.994±0.018 (p<0.05). Conclusion : The ratio of fractal dimension at interdental crest and furcation area to interdental middle 1/3 area showed a statistically significant difference between normal and patient group. In conclusion, it is thought that fractal analysis might be useful for the diagnosis of periodontitis.

The surface morphology of oil-lubricated surface for hydraulic piston motor is believed to be extremely effective in contact mechanics. adhesion. friction and wear. In order to describe morphology of various rubbed surface on driving condition, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions in oil-lubricated system. And fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface of hydraulic members with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze surface structure are fractal dimension. Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Morphology of rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimension.

This paper presents a fundamental fractal characteristics of the growing crack that has an irregularity producing a zigzag crack contour. This irregularity is analysed by a fractal geometry in a box counting method that is a very simple technique. First the fractal dimensions and actual fractal extensive crack length are obtained. Also a fractal fracture energy relation with a fractal dimension is found so as to get fractal crack behaviors. Thus it can be shown that the fractal dimension has a possibility as a fracture parameter in a real crack growth length meaning.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the results of fractal analysis can be used as criteria for midpalatal suture maturation evaluation. Methods: The study included 131 subjects aged over 18 years of age (range 18.1-53.4 years) who underwent cone-beam computed tomography. Skeletonized images of the midpalatal suture were obtained via image processing software and used to calculate fractal dimensions. Correlations between maturation stage and fractal dimensions were calculated using Spearman's correlation coefficient. Optimal fractal dimension cut-off values were determined using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The distribution of maturation stages of the midpalatal suture according to the cervical vertebrae maturation index was highly variable, and there was a strong negative correlation between maturation stage and fractal dimension (-0.623, p < 0.001). Fractal dimension was a statistically significant indicator of dichotomous results with regard to maturation stage (area under curve = 0.794, p < 0.001). A test in which fractal dimension was used to predict the resulting variable that splits maturation stages into ABC and D or E yielded an optimal fractal dimension cut-off value of 1.0235. Conclusions: There was a strong negative correlation between fractal dimension and midpalatal suture maturation. Fractal analysis is an objective quantitative method, and therefore we suggest that it may be useful for the evaluation of midpalatal suture maturation.

Total length of stream networks and main stream length vary with topographic map scales, and the stream length of drainage basin on topographic map can be viewed as a fractal. Total length of stream network and main stream length are represented as only stream area ratio($R_a$) based on Horton's laws, thereafter the fractal dimensions of stream network and main stream length are derived as a simple function of stream length($R_L$) and stream area ratios($R_a$) respectively. The derived equations of fractal dimension are applied to Sansung basin in Kum River and compared with the equations already existed. The stream network appeared as space filling with fractal dimension near 2 as map scale increases, while main stream length shows near 1. The results of this study are expected to be helpful in the quantitative analysis of drainage network composition with map scale.
The Snyder's synthetic unit hydrograph method is selected to apply the concept of the fractal dimension by stream order for the practicable rainfall-runoff generation, and fourth types of the Snyder's relation are derived from topographic and observed unit hydrograph data of twenty-nine basins. As a result of the analysis of twenty-nine basins and the verification of two basins, the Snyder's relation which considers the fractal dimension of the stream length and uses calculated unit hydrograph data shows the best result. The concept of the fractal dimension by stream order is applied to the Snyder's synthetic unit hydrograph method. The topographic factors, used in the Snyder's synthetic unit hydrograph method, which have a property of the stream length like $L_{ma}$ (mainstream length) and $L_{ca}$ (length along the mainstream to a point nearest the watershed centroid) were considered. In order to simplify the fractal property of stream length, it is supposed that $L_{ma}$ has not the fractal dimension and the stream length between $L_{ma}$ and ($L_{ma}\;-\;L_{ca}$) has the fractal dimension of 1.027. From the utilization of this supposition, a new Snyder's relation which consider the fractal dimension of the stream length occurred by the map scale used was finally suggested.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a radiographic estimate of osseous fractal dimension is useful in the characterization of structural changes in bone. Ten specimens of bone were progressively decalcified in fresh 50 ml solutions of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid solution at cummulative timed periods of 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 and 90 minutes, and radiographed from 0 degree projection angle controlled by intraoral parelleling device. The test set of 70 radiographs was digitized and digitally filtered to reduce film -grain noise. I performed one-dimensional variance and fractal analysis of bony profiles or scan lines. Correlation analysis quantified the relationship between variance and fractal dimension. The obtained results were as follow. 1. After the first stage of decalcification variance and fractal dimension of scan line pixel intensities generally decreased with a range of 57.94 to 12.64 and 1.59 to 1.36. 2. Correlation coefficient(r) relating variances to fractal dimensions was consistantly excellent(range r=0.90 to 0.98). 3. Variance and fractal dimension were much alike in ability to discriminate, at leat on a group basis, between control and decalcified specimens.
The changes in the dispersion of carbon black in liquid polyisoprene under shear flow with time have been investigated by time-resolved ultra small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) method. The analyses of USAXS profile immediately after the start of shear flow clarified that the aggregates of carbon black with a mean radius of gyration of 14 nm and surface fractal dimension of 2.5 form the fractal network structure with mass-fractal dimension of 2.9. After the application of the shear flow, the scattering intensity increases with time at the observed whole entire q region, and then the a shoulder appears at $q=0.005nm^{-1}$, indicating that the agglomerate is broken and becomes smaller by shear flow. The analysis by the Unified Guinier/Power-law approach yielded several characteristic parameters, such as the sizes of aggregate and agglomerate, mass-fractal dimension of agglomerate, and surface fractal dimension of the primary particle. While the mean radius of gyration of the agglomerate decreases with time, the mean radius of gyration of the aggregate, mass fractal dimension, and surface fractal dimension don't change with time, indicating that the aggregates peel off the surface of the agglomerate.

Recently, the fractal interpolation methods have been widely introduced and used to estimate and analyze various theoretical and experimental data. Because of the chaotic behaviors of dynamic cutting force data, some method for end-milling force analysis must be used. The fractal analysis used in this paper is fractal linear interpolation and fractal dimension. Also, several methods for computing fractal dimensions have been used in which the fractal dimension of the typical dynamic end-milling force was calculated according to number of data points that are generally lower than 200 data points sampled. This fractal analysis shows a possible prediction of end-milling force that has some dynamic chatter property or stationary property in endmilling operation.
