  • Excitation and propagation of guided waves are very complex problems in pipes due to their dispersive nature. Pipes are commonly used in the oil, chemical or nuclear industry and hence must be inspected regularly to ensure continued safe operation. The normal mode expansion(NME) method is given for the amplitude with which any propagating waveguide mode is generated in the pipes by applied surface tractions. Numerical results are calculated based on the NME method using different sources, i.e., non-axisymmetric partial loading and quasi-axisymmetric loading sources. The sum of amplitude coefficients for 0~nineth order of the harmonic modes are calculated based on the NME method and the dispersion curves in pipes. The superimposed total field which is namely the angular profile, varies with propagating distance and circumferential angle. This angular profile of guided waves provides information for setting the transducer position to find defects in pipes.

  • Non-destructive inspection techniques using laser have been broading their application areas as well as growing their measurement skills together with the rapid development of circumferential technology like fiber optics, computer and image processing. The ESPI technique is already on the stage of on-line testing with commercial products in developed country nations. Especially, this technique is expected to be applied to the nuclear industry, automobile and aerospace because it is proper for the vibration measurement and it can be applied to objects of a high temperature. This paper describes the use of the ESPI system for measuring vibration patterns on the reflecting objects. Using this system, high-quality Jo fringes for identifying mode shapes are displayed. A bias vibration is introduced into the reference beam to shift the Jo fringes so that fringe shift algorithms can be used to determine vibration amplitude. Using this method, amplitude fields for vibrating objects were obtained directly from the time-average interferograms recorded by the ESPI system.

  • In recent years, many researcher have been interested in the stability of a thin beam. Among them, Pai and Nayfeh[1] had investigated the nonplanar motion of the cantilever beam under lateral base excitation and chaotic motion, but this study is associated with internal resonance, i.e. one to one resonance. Also Cusumano[2] had made an experiment on a thin beam, called Elastica, under bending loads. In this experiment, he had shown that there exists out-of-plane motion, involving the bending and the torsional mode. Pak et al.[3] verified the validity of Cusumano's experimental works theoretically and defined the existence of Non-Local Mode(NLM), which is came out due to the instability of torsional mode and the corresponding aspect of motions by using the Normal Modes. Lee[4] studied on a thin beam under bending loads and investigated the routes to chaos by using forcing amplitude as a control parameter. In this paper, we are interested in the motion of a thin beam under torsional loads. Here the form of force based on the natural forcing function is used. Consequently, it is found that small torsional loads result in instability and in case that the forcing amplitude is increasing gradually, the motion appears in the form of dynamic double potential well, finally leads to complex motion. This phenomenon is investigated through the poincare map and time response. We also check that Harmonic Balance Method(H.B.M.) is a suitable tool to calculate the bifurcated modes.

  • Recently, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) has gained considerable attention as a novel technique of signal processing, which shows promise for the system identification and damage detection of structures. This study investigates the effectiveness and accuracy of the HHT method for the system identification and damage detection of structures through a series of experiments. A multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structural model has been constructed with modular members, and the columns of the model can be replaced or removed to simulate damages at different locations with different severities. The measured response data of the structure due to an impulse loading is first decomposed into modal responses using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) approach with a band-pass filter technique. Then, the Hilbert transform is subsequently applied to each modal response to obtain the instantaneous amplitude and phase angle time histories. A linear least-square fit procedure is used to identify the natural frequencies and damping ratios from the instantaneous amplitude and phase angle for each modal response. When the responses at all degrees of freedom are measured, the mode shape and the physical mass, damping and stiffness matrices of the structure can be determined. Based on a comparison of the stiffness of each story unit prior to and after the damage, the damage locations and severities can be identified. Experimental results demonstrate that the HHT method yields quite accurate results for engineering applications, providing a promising tool for structural health monitoring.

  • Brake squeal noise has been a problem since the early days of motoring . It is important to obtain vibration mode shape for reduction of brake noise . Stroboscopic Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry is a very powerful measuring method for study of vibrating objects in static state compared with conventional methods because this method can give both resonance frequency and quantitative visualization of vibration mode shape at the same time. In this paper, we performed qualitative visualization and quantitative analysis of vibration mode shpae of disk brake by using stroboscopic ESPI and phase shifting method. The stroboscopic wavefronts are obtained by chopping continuous wave laser beam using acousto-optic modulator .Experiments were performed at the same constraint conditions as disk brake of the practical vehicle as far as possible. The experimental results of this paper show quantitative measurement of vibration mode shape and quantiative visualization of vibration amplitude of disk brake with 3D plotting.

  • Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are the pacemaker cells that generate slow waves in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the present study, we investigated the effect of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (mitoKATP) channel on pacemaking activity in cultured ICCs from murine small intestine by using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. Under current clamp mode, at 10μM glibenclamide, there was no change in pacemaking activity of ICCs. At $30{\mu}M$ glibenclamide, an inhibitor of the ATP sensitive $K^+$ channels, we could find two examples. If pacemaking activity of ICCs was irregulating, pacemaking activity of ICCs was changed into regulating and if in normal conditions, membrane potential amplitude was increased. At $50{\mu}M$ glibenclamide, the resting membrane potential was depolarized. At 3mM 5-HDA, an inhibitor of the mitoKATP channels, inhibited the pacemaking activity of ICCs. Both the amplitude and the frequency were decreased. At 5 mM 5-HDA, both the amplitude and the frequency were completely abolished. Diazoxide, an opener of the mitoKATP channels, was applied to examine its effect on pacemaking activity of ICCs. At $50{\mu}M$ concentration, the pacemaking activity of ICCs was inhibited. Both the amplitude and the frequency were decreased. At 1 mM concentration, both the amplitude and the frequency were completely abolished and the resting membrane potential was shaked. These results indicate that mitoKATP channel has an important role in pacemaking activity of ICCs.

  • This paper describes an experimental study on the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped columns. The lateral loads were applied along the web of the column with different loading histories, such as monotonic loading, mixed loading of variable amplitude cyclic loading and monotonic loading, constant amplitude cyclic loading and variable amplitude cyclic loading. The failure modes, load-displacement curves, characteristic loads and displacements, ductility, strength and stiffness degradations and energy dissipation capacity of the column were analyzed. The effects of loading history on the seismic performance were focused on. The test results show that the specimens behaved differently in the aspects of the failure mode subject to different loading history, although all the failure modes can be summarized as flexural failure. The hysteretic loops of specimens are plump, and minimum values of the failure drift angles and ductility coefficients are 1/24 and 4.64, respectively, which reflect good seismic performance of SRC T-shaped column. With the increasing numbers of loading cycles, the column reveals lower bearing capacity and ductility. The strength and stiffness of the column with variable amplitude cyclic loading degrades more rapidly than that with constant amplitude cyclic loading, and the total cumulative dissipated energy of the former is less.

  • Field line resonances (FLRs) observed in the magnetosphere often have the amplitude of a few nT, which indicates that dB/B roughly satisfies ~0.01. It is well known that the FLRs are excited by compressional waves via mode conversion, but there has been no apparent criterion on the maximum amplitude in the regime of linear approximations. Such limited range of amplitude should be understood by including nonlinear saturation of FLRs, which has not been examined until now. In this study, using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation code, we examine the evolution of nonlinear field line resonances (FLRs) in the cold plasmas. The MHD code used in this study allows a full nonlinear description and enables us to study the maximum amplitude of FLRs. When the disturbance is sufficiently small, it is shown that linear properties of MHD wave coupling are well reproduced. In order to examine a nonlinear excitation of FLRs, it is shown how these FLRs become saturated as the initial magnitude of disturbances is assumed to increase. Our results suggest that the maximum amplitude of FLRs become saturated at the level of the same order of dB/B as in observations. In addition, we discuss the role of both linear terms and nonlinear terms in the MHD wave equations.
