Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile-Based Carbon Nanofibers and Their Hydrogen Storages

  • Electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were carbonized with or without iron (III) acetylacetonate to induce catalytic graphitization within the range of 900-1,500$^{circ}C$, resulting in ultrafine carbon fibers with a diameter of about 90-300 nm. Their structural properties and morphologies were investigated. The carbon nanofibers (CNF) prepared without a catalyst showed amorphous structures and very low surface areas of 22-31 $m^{2}$/g. The carbonization in the presence of the catalyst produced graphite nanofibers (GNF). The hydrogen storage capacities of these CNF and GNF materials were evaluated through the gravimetric method using magnetic suspension balance (MSB) at room temperature and 100 bar. The CNFs showed hydrogen storage capacities which increased in the range of 0.16-0.50 wt$\%$ with increasing carbonization temperature. The hydrogen storage capacities of the GNFs with low surface areas of 60-253 $m^{2}$/g were 0.14-1.01 wt$\%$. Micropore and mesopore, as calculated using the nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption isotherms, were not the effective pore for hydrogen storage.

IRAS 09425-6040: A Silicate Carbon Star with Crystalline Dust

  • The silicate carbon star IRAS 09425-6040 shows very conspicuous crystalline silicate dust features and excessive emission at far infrared. To investigate properties of dusty envelopes around the object, we use radiative transfer models for axisymmetric and sphericallly symmetric dust distributions. We perform model calculations for various possible combinations of dust shells and disks with various dust species. We compare the model results with the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) including the IRAS, ISO, AKARI, MSX and 2MASS data. We find that a model with multiple disks of amorphous and crystalline silicate and multiple spherical shells of carbon dust can reproduce the observed SED fairly well. This supports the scenario for the origin of silicate carbon stars that oxygen-rich material was shed by mass loss when the primary star was an M giant and the O-rich material is stored in a circumbinary disk. Highly (about 75 %) crystallized forsterite dust in the disk can reproduce the conspicuous crystalline features of the ISO observational data. This object looks to have a detached silicate and H2O ice shell with a much higher mass-loss rate. It could be a remnant of the chemical transition phase. The last phase of stellar winds of O-rich materials looks to be a superwind.

  • DLC(Diamond Like Carbon) 박막은 높은 경도, 낮은 마찰계수, 내화학성 등의 우수한 트라이볼로지적 특성을 가지고 있기 때문에 다양한 산업분야에서 적용되고 있다. 이러한 DLC 박막은 합성기구나 구조의 관점에서 몇 가지 다른 이름으로 불려지기도 한다. 밀도와 경도가 높기 때문에 경질탄소(Hard Carbon)라고도 불려지며, 수소를 함유한 경우에는 수소함유 비정질 탄소(Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon)이라는 이름이 사용되며, 고밀도 탄소(Dense Carbon) 또는 고밀도 탄화수소(Dense Hydrocarbon)라고 불리기도 한다. 이렇듯 DLC 박막은 합성방법에 따라 함유된 수소와 탄소의 결합구조의 차이가 있다. 수소 함유한 DLC 박막은 20~50%까지 수소를 함유하며, DLC막의 기계적, 광학적, 전기적 특성들이 수소함량과 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 함유된 수소가 $300^{\circ}C$ 이상의 온도에서는 쉽게 결합에서 이탈되면서 흑연화와 더불어 마찰마모시 코팅층의 파손이 발생한다고 보고되고 있고, 또한 수소량이 증가함에 따라 DLC 박막의 경도는 감소하게 되는데, 이는 수소에 의해 dangling bond가 Passivation되면 탄화수소의 3차원적인 Crosslinking은 그만큼 감소하게 되기 때문이라고 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 PECVD를 이용하여 여러 가지 공정에 따른 DLC 박막을 증착시켰으며, 수소함유량에 따른 DLC막의 구조와 그에 따른 경도 변화를 살펴보았다. FTIR(Furier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)과 Raman Spectroscopy을 이용하여 DLC막의 수소의 결합상태를 관찰하였으며, Nano Indentation을 사용하여 미소경도를 측정하였고, FE-SEM을 이용하여 표면과 단면을 관찰하였다. 막의 두께 측정에는 ${\alpha}$-Step을 사용하였으며, Ball-on-Disk 타입의 Tribo-meter을 이용하여, 모재의 경도에 따른 마찰계수 변화를 관찰하였다.

Fabrication and Characteristics of Ni Doped Carbon Thin Films Prepared by Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering for the Application of Biomaterials (생체 적합 소재 응용을 위한 비대칭 마그네트론 스퍼터링으로 제작된 Ni 도핑된 탄소 박막의 제조 및 특성)

  • Various Ni-doped carbon (C : Ni) thin films were fabricated using different Ni target power densities by unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBM). The effects of target power density on the structural, physical, surface, and electrical properties of C : Ni films were investigated. The UBM C : Ni thin films exhibited uniformly smooth surfaces. The rms surface roughness and friction coefficient values of the C : Ni films decreased with the increase in target power density. The physical properties of the films such as hardness and elastic moduli increased while their electrical properties such as resistivity decreased with the increase in the target power density. These results show that an increase of the power density leads to an increase in the proportion of Ni and nanocrystallization of the amorphous carbon film; this contributes to the changes observed in the physical and electrical characteristics.

  • Electrochemical capacitors are becoming attractive energy storage systems particularly for applications involving high power requirements such as hybrid systems consisting of batteries and electrochemical capacitors for electric vehicle propulsion. A new type electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) was constructed by using carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and DAAQ(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) electrode. Carbonaceous materials are found in variety forms such as graphite, diamond, carbon fibers etc. While all the carbon nanofibers include impurities such as amorphous carbon, nanoparticles, catalytic metals and incompletely grown carbons. We have eliminated of Ni particles and some carbonaceous particles in nitric acid. Nitric acid treated CNFs could be covered with very thin DAAQ oligomer from the results of CV and TG analyses and SEM images. DAAQ oligomer film exhibited a specific capacity as 45-50 Ah/kg in 4M $H_2SO_4$. We established Process Parameters of the technique for the formation of nano-structured materials. Furthermore, improved the capacitive properties of the nano structured CNFs electrodes using controlled solution chemistry. As a result, CNFs coated by DAAQ composite electrode showed relatively good electrochemical behaviors in acidic electrolyte system with respect to specific capacity and scan rate dependency.

  • 3,3-Dimethyl-1-butene (C6H12) monomer를 이용하여 RF power와 압력에 따라 막을 증착하였다. 증착된 비정질 탄소막은 power/pressure (W/Torr)가 증가할수록 Raman 스펙트럼에서 D peak가 증가하였고, ring 구조의 막을 형성하였다. 또한 ring 구조의 막이 형성됨으로써 hardness와 modulus는 각각 12 GPa과 85 GPa로 선형적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

Recycling of Carbon Particle from Phenol Resin Waste using Supercritical Fluid (초임계 유체를 이용한 폐페놀수지로부터 카본입자 재활용 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated a new recycling method of phenol resin, which is widely used to make electric insulation boards and adhesives, into carbon particles by using supercritical fluids. Because phenol resin is insoluble and infusible, most of the phenol resin wastes are buried in the ground or incinerated, which leads to environmental pollution. Therefore, development of a new method to recycle phenol resin waste is an urgent issue. In this study, phenol resin waste was treated with four sub/supercritical solvents: ethanol, acetone, water, and methanol. For all the sub/supercritical solvents, the phenol resin wastes were broken down into carbon nano particles at much lower temperatures than that required in the existing carbon particle manufacturing processes. We investigated the difference of morphologies and physical properties of recycled carbon particles according to the use of various solvents. As a result, carbon nano particles with the same amorphous structure were obtained from phenol resin waste with the usage of various sub/supercritical solvents at much lower temperature.
