Because ammonia in water body can cause water pollution as a result of generating ammonium ion, it is of importance in the management of water quality. This work performed to analyze the ammonium ion by measuring the color band length on the basis of modifying the indophenol method. When 1-naphthol was employed as a coloring agent, the maximum absorbance was shown near 720nm, where the proper injection was in the range of 0.5-1.5ml. About 80% of absorbance was observed after the color development was made within the 20 minutes. In the manufacturing of coloring agent, the proper concentration of NaOH was 1.5-2.5M, and the effect of pH on the color development is negligible. In addition, the color development was effectively in the region of room temperature.
The removal property of magnetic zeolite for the adsorption of aqueous ammonium ion was examined in this work. The surface modified magnetic zeolite was produced by hydrothermal synthesis. The complex of zeolite and $Fe_3O_4$ was established by the observation of SEM and XRD analysis and less than 12.6% of $Fe_3O_4$ content in magnetic zeolite was observed in the form of $Fe_3O_4$ particles. The optimum pH of adsorption was shown around 8 and the maximum adsorption linearly decreased with the increase of $Fe_3O_4$ content. The adsorption isotherm for aqueous ammonium ion was approximated by Langmuir equation. The developed surface modified magnetic zeolite adsorbent was recommended to control the nitrogen pollution for wetland environment system.

Water pollution by ammonium ion and nitrate is a common and growing problem in the ecosystem. Process of biological removal consists of nitrification and denitrification by bacteria. Ammonium is oxidized generally to nitrate by nitrification and nitrate is reduced to dinitrogen gas in the subsequent denitrification process. Although natural zeolite is well known for its ability to preferentially remove ammonium, it is not sufficiently removing ammonium ion and nitrate by adsorption. In order to overcome this problem, a method of biological removal with zeolite is used for simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrate. As a result, in case of shaking culture with 1% seed and passing through zeolite column, the process revealed that ammonium ion could be removed completely after 14 hours. The removal of nitrate using columns with naturally adsorbed bacteria onto zeolite reached approximately 100% after 4 hours.
In this study, reaction model and reactions rate accelerated by o-iodosobenzoate ion(IB$^{\ominus}$) on hydrolysis reaction of p-nitrophenyl valate(NPV) using ethyl tri-octyl ammonium mesylate(ETAMs) for quaternary ammonium salts, the phase transfer catalysis(PTC) reagent, were investigated. The effect of IB$^{\ominus}$ on hydrolysis reaction rate constant of NPV was weak without ETAMs solutions. Otherwise, in ETAMs solutions, the hydrolysis reactions exhibit higher first order kinetics with respect to the nucleophile, IB$^{\ominus}$, and ETAMs, suggesting that reactions are occurring in small aggregates of the three species including the substrate(NPV), whereas the reaction of NPV with OH$^{\ominus}$ is not catalyzed by ETAMs. Different concentrations of NPV were tested to measure the change of rate constants to investigate the effect of NPV as substrate and the results showed that the effect was weak. This means the reaction would be the first order kinetics with respect to the nucleophile. This behavior for the drastic rate-enhancement of the hydrolysis is referred as 'Aggregation complex model' for reaction of hydrophobic organic ester with o-iodosobenzoate ion(IB$^{\ominus}$) in hydrophobic quarternary ammonium salt(ETAMs) solutions.

The effect of ammonium ion concentration on the production of demethyl- chlortetracycline (DMCT) by a DMCT overproducing mutant, Streptomyces aureofaciens 27VR, and the optimal control of pH were studied. The optimum levels of pH control were 6.5-6.6 for 80-120 hr, 6.4- 6.5 for 121-150hr and 6.3-6.4 for 151-190hr. The optimum level of ammonium ion concentration during the pH control was lower than 20 mg%. Under the optimized culture condition, it was possible to produce DMCT with an 18% increase in productivity compared to that of standard culture condition in 190hrs of the fermentor operation.
A marine bacterium producing superoxide dismutase, strain number B446, was screened with nitrite quantitation method using hydroxy amine and photochemically generated superoxide ion, and the superoxide dismutase was purified through 35-75% ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Sephadex A-25 ion exchange chromatography, Sephadex G-200 gel filtration chromatography, and High-Q anion exchange chromatography to a yield of 6% and purification fold of 32.3.
The iontophoretic delivery across rat skin of quaternary ammonium salts (isopropamide: ISP, pyridostigmine: PS), which are positively charged over a wide pH range, was measured ill vitro. The study showed that: (a) iontophoresis significantly enhanced delivery of ISP and PS compared to respective passive transport; (b) delivery of ISP and PS was directly proportional to the applied continuous direct current density over the range of $0-0.69\;mA/cm^2;$ (c) delivery of ISP and PS was also proportional to the drug concentration in the donor compartment over the range of $0-2{\time}l0^{-2}M:$ (d) sodium ion in the donor compartment inhibited the drug transport possibly due to decreasing the electric transference number of the drug; (e) delivery of ISP and PS increased as the pH of the donor solution increased over the pH range 2-7 suggesting permselective nature of the epidermis, and inhibition of the transference number of the drugs by hydronium ion; (f) some organic anions such as taurodeoxycholate, salicylate and benzoate which form lipophilic ion-pair complexes with ISP inhibited the delivery of ISP. The degree of inhibition by the organic anions was linearly proportional to the extraction coefficient $(K_e)$ of ISP from the partition system with each counteranion between phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and n-octanol. For PS, however, taurodeoxycholate, but not salicylate and benzoate inhibited the iontophoretic delivery. It suggests that not only sodium ion and hydronium ion but also the counteranions which form lipophilic ion-pairs with quaternary ammonium drugs are not favorable components in formulating the donor solution of the drugs to achieve an effective iontophoretic delivery.
This study proposes the use of a cobalt-based Prussian blue analogue (Co-PBA; potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate), as an adsorbent for the cost-effective recovery of aqueous ammonium ions. The characterization of Co-PBA involved various techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and zeta potential. The prepared Co-PBA reached an adsorption equilibrium for ammonium ions within approximately 480 min, which involved both surface adsorption and subsequent diffusion into the interior. The isotherm experiment revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 37.29 mg/g, with the Langmuir model indicating a predominance of chemical monolayer adsorption. Furthermore, the material consistently demonstrated adsorption efficiency across a range of pH conditions. Notably, adsorption was observed even when competing cations were present. Co-PBA emerges as a readily synthesized adsorbent, underscoring its efficacy in ammonium removal and selectivity toward ammonium.
Ion-selective electrode responsive to the thiocynate ion prepared by using the quaternary ammonium salts as a active material and PVC as a membrane matrix. The effect of chemical structure and composition of active material, and the membrane thickness on the linear response. the detection limit, and Nernstian slope of the electrode studied. Under the above optimum conditions of membrane, the effect of pH and the selectivity coefficients to various interfering anions were compared and investigated. It was concluded that the functions of thiocynate ion-selective electrode(ISE) were closely related to the chemical structure of the quaternary ammonium salts. The linear response, and the detection limit of the electrode potential increased with the increase of the carbon chain length of the alkyl group in the quaternary ammonium salts in the ascending order of Aliquat 336T, TOAT, TDAT, and TDDAT. The optimum membrane thickness was 0.3mm. The electrode characteristics was better with the decrease of the concentration of active material, and the best concentration was 3 weight percent. The membrane potential was independent of the pH variation in the region from pH 2 to 12. The order of the selectivity coefficients is as follows:Cl $O_4$$^{[-10]}$ > $I^{[-10]}$ >N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ >B $r^{[-10]}$ > $F^{[-10]}$ >C $l^{[-10]}$ >O $A_{c}$$^{[-10]}$ 〓S $O_4$$^{2-}$.
To investigate ionic characteristics of acid rain by the succeeding rainfall. bulk precipitation was collected every each 5mm rainfall from march to october 1990 at Dae Jeon area. pH, sulfate nitrate, chloride, ammonium ion was measured and analyzed. The result was as follows: 1. The weighted average pH of rain was 5.1$\pm$ 0.72(4.15~7.6) and rain pH less than 5.5 was appeared 51.3% 2. Average ion concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium ion was 125.12 $\mu$eq/l, 62.38 $\mu$eq/l, 31.95 $\mu$eq/l, 66.6 $\mu$eq/l and rates of each anions was 57%, 28.4%, 14.6% and rate of sulfate by nitrate was 2 times. 3. There is no correlations time interval of rainfall and Ion concentration change. 4. From initial to 15mm rainfall, each ion concentrations were decreased. and average concentration of pH, SO$^{-2}_{4}$, Cl ion concentration was increased in the succeeding rainfall 5. Only sulfate ion was correlated by the simple regression analysis with pH except NO$^{-}_{3}$, Cl$^{-}$ and NH$_{4}^{+}$ Cl$^{-}$ correlation coefficient was very high at the multiple regression analysis with pH. 6. Simple & multiple correlation coefficient among anions and NH$^{+}_{4}$ was very high especially N$^{+}_{4}$ and SO$^{2-}_{4}$ at simple regression analysis and SO$^{-2}_{4}$ and NO$_{3}^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$, NH$_{4}^{-}$ at multiple regression analysis.
