  • An experimental investigation was carried out to study the performance of a bubble pump for the diffusion absorption refrigerating system. Ammonia was used as the refrigerant and the helium was charged in order to balance the pressure between the low and high pressure side. As experimental variables, the concentration of ammonia charged into system, heat input, and the pressure of helium were selected. Experimental results show that the generation rate of ammonia vapor and the circulation rate of diluted ammonia solution were increased as the heat input increases, but the ratio of the solution to vapor flow rate was decreased. The generation rate of refrigerant vapor and the circulation rate of diluted ammonia solution increased as the system pressure decreased. Finally under the condition of 25 bars, the concentration of rich ammonia solution was not affected by the generation rate of ammonia vapor and the circulation of diluted ammonia solution.

  • Refrigeration plants using absorption principles have been around for many years with initial development taking place over 100 years ago. Although the majority of absorption cycles are based on water-LiBr cycle, many applications exist where ammonia-water can be used, especially where lower temperatures are desirable. In both systems water is used as working fluid, but in quite different ways: as a solvent for the ammonia system, and as refrigerant for the lithium bromide system. This explains that the lithium bromide absorption system is strictly limited to evaporation temperatures above $0^{\circ}C$. The main industrial applications for refrigeration are in the temperature range below $0^{\circ}C$, the field for the binary system ammonia-water.

  • A diffusion absorption refrigerator is a heat-generated refrigeration system. It uses a three-component working fluid consisting of the refrigerant (ammonia), the absorbent (water) and the auxiliary gas (typically hydrogen). This system has no moving parts and the associated noise and vibration. In this study, the operating characteristics of diffusion absorption refrigerator are investigated through cycle modeling and simulation. System parameters considered in this study are the charged concentration of ammonia aqueous solution, the concentration difference between absorber inlet and outlet and the system pressure determined by the amount of auxiliary gas charged. It was found that there exists a critical value of concentration difference that maximizes the refrigerating capacity. And the lower the system pressure, the higher the refrigerating capacity.

  • An air-cooled ammonia/water GAX(Generator-Absorber heat eXchange) absorption cooling cycle is proposed and its performance is numerically evaluated. It is shown that the performance of the system is greatly dependent on the quality of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator. For any refrigerant concentration in the investigated range(99.1~99.9% ammonia), the cycle COP(coefficient of performance) reaches the highest value, when some amount(about 7%) of refrigerant evaporates in the refrigerant heat exchanger. Among temperature differences in various heat exchangers, the temperature difference between GAX-absorber and the GAX-generator shows the greatest effect on the system performance, whereas pressure losses cause no significant decrease in COP. The system COP increases almost linearly with increasing evaporator temperature, decreasing absorber temperature or decreasing condenser temperature. If both absorber and condenser temperature increase simultaneously, the decrease in the COP becomes larger.

  • The objectives of this paper are to examine the effect of nano-particles on the pool type absorption heat transfer enhancement and to find the optimal conditions to design a highly effective compact absorber for ammonia/water absorption system. The effect of $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles and carbon nanotube(CNT) on the absorption performance is studied experimentally. The experimental ranges of the key parameters are 20% of ammonia concentration, $0{\sim}0.08\;vol%$ (volume fraction) of CNT particles, and $0{\sim}0.06 \;vol%$ of $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles. For the ammonia/water nanofluids, the heat transfer rate and absorption rate with 0.02 vol% $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles were found to be 29% and 18% higher than those without nano-particles, respectively. It is recommended that the concentration of 0.02 vol% of $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles be the best candidate for ammonia/water absorption performance enhancement.

  • A diffusion absorption refrigerator is a heat-generated refrigeration system. It uses a three-component working fluid consisting of the refrigerant (ammonia), the absorbent (water) and the auxiliary gas (hydrogen or helium). In this study, experimental investigations have been carried out to examine the effects of charging conditions of working fluids on the evaporating temperature for diffusion absorption refrigerator. Experimental parameters considered in the present experiments are charging concentration, solution charge and system pressure determined by auxiliary gas charged. As a result, in the charging condition of 35% of concentration and 20 kg$_{f}$cm$^2$ of system pressure, the system has the lowest evaporating temperature. It was found that there exists a minimum value of solution charge for the operation of diffusion absorption refrigerator.r.

  • Dynamic behavior of an ammonia-water absorption system was investigated numerically. Thermal-hydraulic model for a single-effect 3 RT chiller was developed by applying transient conservation equations of total mass, $NH_3$ mass, energy and momentum to each component. Transient variations of system properties and transport variables were analysed during start-up operation. Numerical analyses were performed to quantify the effects of bulk concentration and charging ratio on the system performance in terms of cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, and time constant of system. For an absorption chiller considered in the present study, optimum charging ratio and bulk concentration were to found to exist, which resulted in the maximum cooling capacity and COP. The time constant increased as the charging ratio increased, but decreased with the increase of bulk concentration.

  • Thermodynamic cycles using binary mixtures as working fluids offer a high potential for utilization of low-temperature heat sources. This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of Goswami cycle which was recently suggested to produce power and cooling simultaneously and combines the Rankine cycle and absorption refrigeration cycle by using ammoniawater mixture as working fluid. Effects of the system parameters such as concentration of ammonia and turbine inlet pressure on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that refrigeration capacity or thermal efficiency has an optimum value with respect to ammonia concentration as well as to turbine inlet pressure.

  • Recently, the power and refrigeration cogeneration based on Kalina cycle has attracted much attention for more efficient utilization of low-grade energy. This study presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of a cogeneration cycle of power and absorption refrigeration based on Kalina cycle. The cycle combines Kalina cycle (KCS-11) and absorption cycles by adding a condenser and an evaporator between turbine and absorber. The effects of ammonia mass fraction and separation pressure were investigated on the system performance of the system. Results showed that the energy utilization of the system could be greatly improved compared to the basic Kalina cycle.
