  • This study was investigated to the recovery of alumina from the first calcined waste pottery using alkaline sintering. This study was based on calcination result of a commercial ${\alpha}-Al2_O_3$ with NaOH powder. $NaAlO_2$ was formed by calcination of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ with NaOH and conversion of $NaAlO_2$ from ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was 91.4% at calcination condition ; weight ritio of $NaOH/{\alpha}-Al2_O_3$ 1.5, $800^{\circ}C$, and 90min. The first calcined waste porrery from the manufacturing Procedure of H Ltd. was grinded to 170/270mesh by a ball mill and calcined over $500^{\circ}C$ with NaOH powder. The calcined sample was dissolved in $25^{\circ}C$ water and sodiumaluminosilicate solid was formed. After filtration, the contained aluminum was leached out by dissolving sodiumaluminosilicate solid in 1N HCl. We estimated the efficiency of Al extraction from waste pottery by ICP analysis and NaOH was added to the filtrate and then aluminum compound was precipitated with $Al(OH)_3$ and recovered. The investigation was carried out with the variables ; the calcination temperature($500-900^{\circ}C$), the calcination time(30~90min), and the weight ratio of NaOH/waste pottery(0.5~1.5). The treatment efficiency of the waste pottery and the recovery of Al as 97.9%, 91.9% were obtained under the optimum conditions as followed ; the weight ratio of NaOH/waste pottery was 1.5 and the calcination conditions were $900^{\circ}C$ and 60min.

  • Thick film sealing glass paste is required for cell packaging of NaS based battery for energy storage system, to join the beta-alumina electrolyte tube and the alpha-alumina battery cell cap components. This paper presents the effect of the particle sizes of seal glass powder and the sealing temperatures on the microstructure of the glass sealants was investigated. It was found that the larger in the particle size of seal glass powder, the smaller the pore volume and the number of pores in a unit area. Also, the number of pores decreased with increasing the sealing temperatures while the pore size was increased. This result enables the control of porosity, pore distribution and number of pores in a microstructure of glass sealing component by proper selection of glass powders particle size and sealing temperature.

  • Thermal protection systems (TPS) are a group of materials that are indispensable for protecting spacecraft from the aerodynamic heating occurring during entry into an atmosphere. Among candidate materials for TPS, ceramic insulation materials are usually considered for reusable TPS. In this study, ceramic insulation materials, such as alumina enhanced thermal barrier (AETB), are fabricated via typical ceramic processing from ceramic fiber and additives. Mixtures of silica and alumina fibers are used as raw materials, with the addition of B4C to bind fibers together. Reaction-cured glass is also added on top of AETB to induce water-proof functionality or high emissivity. Some issues, such as the elimination of clumps in the AETB, and processing difficulties in the production of reusable surface insulation are reported as well.

  • Alumina powder have been expanded its application in industry and required to control its morphology such as powder size and aspect ratio of single particle. It can be synthesized by molten - salt method which is possible to obtain various shapes of ceramic particles by controlling the growth direction because each crystal face has different growth rate. In this study, various combinations of salts such as NaCl, $Na_2SO_4$, $Na_3PO_4$ and their mixture were used for control the growth of plate like alumina particle from the initial stage of synthesis because salt having different ionic strength can control the growth direction of ceramic particle under its melting condition around $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$, and growth behavior of plate-like alumina particle with different reaction conditions such as temperature and concentration on the crystal size and shape was studied.

  • In order to apply synthesis technique of the high purity ceramic powder to the traditional ceramic powder, mullite powder which is widly used for refractory materials was synthesized. Boehmite and Hadong kaolin with high alumina content were used as starting materials and gel coating method was tried to produce the mullite powder. As a result, the mullite powder of high quality was successfully obtained at 1350℃. The unreacted silica and cornudum were not observed in the synthesized mullite powder, mullite content was more than 80% when the starting materials were sintered at 1700℃. Their properties showed bulk specific gravity of 2.56, water absorption of 1.9%, and 3-point flexual strength of 169 MPa. It is thought that that their good properties are applicable to refractory materials of high quality.

  • Suspended fine mineral particles are deposited at the areas with low flow velocity and low transportation capacity in rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It can be contaminated by heavy metals. Examples of problem fields art dredging of sediment, water pollutants, and maintenance of navigation channels and construction works. To deal with the settling problems it is necessary to understand tile physico-chemical characteristics of cohesive sediment under varying density of particle and ion addition(NaOH, HCl, NaCl), which is dissolved in river, because fine-grained cohesive sediment can lead to flocculation with the physico-chemical influences and takes different characteristics. Experiments with fresh and saline water are followed with fine-grained sediments(alumina and quartz) in settling columns. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor(maximum 10 mbar). Until the initial concentration of 20,000 mg/1 of alumina and quartz the settling velocity was on the increase. Above this initial concentration was it on the decrease. In an acid condition, which causes strong flocculation, average settling velocity of quartz powder was high. In an alkaline water low average settling velocity of it was observed. However, alumina behaved exactly contrarily.

  • Alumina hydrates were prepared by the neutralization of AlCl3.6H2O solution with NH3 gas diluted with N2 gas. The values of pH in reaction solution influenced the formation of alumina hydrates minerals. Amorphous alumina hydrates, for example, were formed at ${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. (2) Bayeritelongrightarrowamorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrowη-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. On the other hand, the shape of alumina hydrates whichw ere prepared by the reacton of Al2(SO4)3.16H2O solution and NH3 gas was spherical, the progress of its phase transformation with increasing temperature was amorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$Al2O3 in sequence.

  • Microwave (Hybrid) Heating (MHH) was used to oxidize and sinter Al-Al2O3 powder mixture. For 25 v/o Al specimen and 35 v/o Al specimen, the total processing to produce low-shrinkage reaction bonded alumina was carried out within 1 hour even though conventional furnace process took more than 10 hours. Compared with conventional fast firing process, MHH process increased more than 40% oxidation at the same temperature, and these high oxidation rates were thought to be caused by the surface ohmic current on Al particles.

  • High temperature dielectric constants of the various ceramic materials have been measured using cavity perturbation method. The measurements were applied to refractory, traditional and fine ceramic powder compacts from room temperature to $1200^{\circ}C$. Calibration constant in the equation suggested by Hutcheon et al., was determined from the dielectric constants of reference specimen (teflon and alumina) at room temperature. From these results, informations on the refectory materials were obtained for the microwave kiln design and understanding of the microwave heating effects of ceramics have been improved.

  • The W-Cu composite powders were synthesized from W and Cu elemental powders by ball-milling process, and their microstructural changes and sintering behaviors were evaluated. The ball milling process was carried out in a 3-dimensional mixer (Turbula mixer) using zirconic ($ZrO_2$) ball and alumina ($Al_2O_3$) vial up to 300 hrs. The ball-milled W-Cu powders revealed nearly spherical shape. Microstructure of the composite powders showed onion-like structure which consists of W and Cu shells due to the moving characteristic of Turbula mixer. The W and Cu elements in the composite powders milled for 300 hrs were homogeneously distributed, and W grain size in the ball-milled powder was smaller than 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Fe impurity introduced during ball milling process was very low as of 0.001 wt%. The relative sintered density of ball-milled W-Cu specimens reached about 94% after sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$.
