  • This study is to determine an optimal reservoir among many alternative proposals in order to obtain the maximized efficiency under the limited budget. There are many alternative proposals which deal with problems to assign reservoir such as water conversion establishment construction, subterranean water, reservoir, submarine pipeline, water bort, and marine water saving base construction. In this paper, the new model to assign the most reasonable alternative is introduced using 0-1 integer programming. This proposed model has not been applied in the optimal reservoir selection problem yet. This paper will contribute to determine the most reasonable alternative to minimize budget under constraints. Also, this proposal model can be applied to other reservoir selection problem in other regions.

Relative strength of 5' splice-site strength defines functions of SRSF2 and SRSF6 in alternative splicing of Bcl-x pre-mRNA

  • Bcl-x, a member of the Bcl-2 family, plays a key role in apoptosis. Alternative splicing of Bcl-x pre-mRNA through alternative 5' splice-site selection produces an anti-apoptotic mRNA isoform that includes exon 2b and a pro-apoptotic Bcl-x mRNA isoform that excludes exon 2b. Here we used Bcl-x minigene and identified SRSF2 and SRSF6 as two regulatory factors of 5' splice-site selection of Bcl-x pre-mRNA. We selected binding clusters closer to 5' splice-sites from multiple potential binding sites of SRSF2 and SRSF6 to perform loss of functions analysis through site-directed mutagenesis. Our results demonstrated that these mutations did not abolish regulatory functions of SRSF2 or SRSF6, indicating that a single binding motif or a cluster was not a functional target of these proteins in Bcl-x pre-mRNA splicing. Random deletion mutagenesis did not disrupt the role of SRSF2 and SRSF6. Importantly, mutagenesis of 5' splice-site to a conserved or a weaker score demonstrated that the weaker strength of the target 5' splice-site or higher strength of the other 5' splice-site strength limited the role of SRSF2 and SRSF6 in 5' splice-site activation.

  • The Ballast Water Treatment System was developed to prevent the unintended transport of unwanted organisms from one region to another as demanded by the IMO (International Maritime Organization). Although various types of BWTS in the world have been developed until now and applied to various ships, there has been no systematic basis for its selection and installation. Currently, the system selection and installation are as per ship owner’s suggestion or by easy installation point of view by the shipyard. In order to organize, systemize and solve problems related to the selection and installation of BWTS, a definitive study has been performed to come up with the best alternative to derive value and criteria which were to be met for vessels which are to be equipped with BWTS. Multiple criteria were compared alongside each other during the course of this study. Accordingly an AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis method for A, B and C companies were done for container ships with size 10,000 TEU and above. Equipment type for “A” company is “Filter, UV & TiO2” combined type. For “B” company it is “Filter & UV” combined type. Finally for “C” company it is “Electrolysis” type. Henceforth, the results of this study aims to come up with the optimum way to select the best and the most suitable BWTS for a certain vessel.

Selecting Climate Change Scenarios Reflecting Uncertainties (불확실성을 고려한 기후변화 시나리오의 선정)

  • Going by the research results of the past, of all the uncertainties resulting from the research on climate change, the uncertainty caused by the climate change scenario has the highest degree of uncertainty. Therefore, depending upon what kind of climate change scenario one adopts, the projection of the water resources in the future will differ significantly. As a matter of principle, it is highly recommended to utilize all the GCM scenarios offered by the IPCC. However, this could be considered to be an impractical alternative if a decision has to be made at an action officer's level. Hence, as an alternative, it is deemed necessary to select several scenarios so as to express the possible number of cases to the maximum extent possible. The objective standards in selecting the climate change scenarios have not been properly established and the scenarios have been selected, either at random or subject to the researcher's discretion. In this research, a new scenario selection process, in which it is possible to have the effect of having utilized all the possible scenarios, with using only a few principal scenarios and maintaining some of the uncertainties, has been suggested. In this research, the use of cluster analysis and the selection of a representative scenario in each cluster have efficiently reduced the number of climate change scenarios. In the cluster analysis method, the K-means clustering method, which takes advantage of the statistical features of scenarios has been employed; in the selection of a representative scenario in each cluster, the selection method was analyzed and reviewed and the PDF method was used to select the best scenarios with the closest simulation accuracy and the principal scenarios that is suggested by this research. In the selection of the best scenarios, it has been shown that the GCM scenario which demonstrated high level of simulation accuracy in the past need not necessarily demonstrate the similarly high level of simulation accuracy in the future and various GCM scenarios were selected for the principal scenarios. Secondly, the "Maximum entropy" which can quantify the uncertainties of the climate change scenario has been used to both quantify and compare the uncertainties associated with all the scenarios, best scenarios and the principal scenarios. Comparison has shown that the principal scenarios do maintain and are able to better explain the uncertainties of all the scenarios than the best scenarios. Therefore, through the scenario selection process, it has been proven that the principal scenarios have the effect of having utilized all the scenarios and retaining the uncertainties associated with the climate change to the maximum extent possible, while reducing the number of scenarios at the same time. Lastly, the climate change scenario most suitable for the climate on the Korean peninsula has been suggested. Through the scenario selection process, of all the scenarios found in the 4th IPCC report, principal climate change scenarios, which are suitable for the Korean peninsula and maintain most of the uncertainties, have been suggested. Therefore, it is assessed that the use of the scenario most suitable for the future projection of water resources on the Korean peninsula will be able to provide the projection of the water resources management that maintains more than 70~80% level of uncertainties of all the scenarios.

  • Selecting promising technology is becoming more and more difficult due to the increased number and complexity. In this study, we propose hybrid AHP/DEA-AR method and hybrid AHP/DEA-AR-G method to evaluate efficiency of technology alternatives based on ordinal rating data collected through survey to technology experts in a certain field and select efficient technology alternative as promising technology. The proposed method normalizes rating data and uses AHP to derive weights to improve the credibility of analysis, then in order to avoid basic DEA models' problems, use DEA-AR and DEA-AR-G to evaluate efficiency of technology alternatives. In this study, we applied the proposed methods to clean technology and compared with the basic DEA models. According to the result of the comparison, we can find that the both proposed methods are excellent in confirming most efficient technology, and hybrid AHP/DEA-AR method is much easier to use in the process of technology selection.

  • Selecting a railroad line requires the comparative evaluation of various elements. As a systematic approach to this selection it will be necessary to apply the VE study and the LCC analysis. This study proposes a methodology for selecting the optimum line of the ralroad using VE-LCC analysis. The VE study is performed by following four steps : Information analysis, Function analysis, Alternative evaluation, and Optimum plan selection. The economics evaluation in VE study is using LCC analysis and Sensitivity analysis. Cost items in LCC analysis are classified into bridge, tunnel, rail, and earthwork. We could select the optimum alte-rnatives considering not only cost elements hut also various evaluation element in VE-LCC analysis.   • It is very important to select the best employees who are suitable for their jobs and duties as considering the efficiency and productivity of the firms' performance. As a result, many kinds of selection methodologies and systems have been developed. Among them is the selection system based on the core competencies which is known as the superior selection systems that can increase the predictive validity who is the right people, compared to the traditional selection system based on the job analysis. Hence, the former has been focused in the complex business situation in recent years. In this case study, we examine the selection system case based on the core competencies of OSS team in Company A, which is one of the largest telecommunication firms and we suggest the implications. According to the results of this case study, defining the core competencies of the job and selecting the right people who had the related competencies not only decreased the turnover rate of OSS team in Company A, but also increased the employees' loyalty and satisfaction for the organizations. This study will be a benchmark to other departments that don't use competency selection system of Company A as well as the firms that want to adapt the selection system based on the core competencies. Also, this case study has a contribution that shows us an alternative model how can the firms identify and select the best right employees.

Study on Brand Naming of Optical Shop through Creation of Alternative (대안의 창출을 통한 안경원 브랜드 네이밍 연구)

  • Purpose: This study aims to understand effective brand naming process of an optical shop brand by a research of brand naming process of optical shop through creation of alternative. Methods: It investigated brand naming process such as character abstraction, target grasp, naming direction set, naming development and etc of an optical shop. It also looked into characteristics of alternative creation patterns such as words mix, typifier, sentence making, part words mix and etc and then, it investigated brand naming examples. Results: Creation of alternative is a phase of brand naming which has to be refined on the basis of creation of abundant alternatives and then to be developed to a brand name. This study suggested examples of brand names of optical shops which were made and adopted by creation of alternative. Conclusions: Creation of alternative in brand naming complies with concept, and it has systemic process and objective selection as an effective way in association of brand and searching words. It is necessary to have brand naming works through creation of alternative for the purpose of individual and strong brand name with desirable association and differentiation of an optical shop.

  • The current virtual reality(VR) simulation functions in construction project are focused on the construction phase. This study attempts to extend the application of VR functions to the design phase. This study suggests various VR functions such as earthwork simulation by road alignment, alternative route selection simulation, structure type selection simulation and underground structure visualization simulation. These functions can visualize road route and earthwork condition and select an optimal design route by simulating virtual placement of alternative route. This study configures systematic methodology for suggested VR simulation functions and develops VR system by the functions. Finally this study suggests an improved design process of road construction project by using the developed VR functions
