  • The simplest and lightest element-hydrogen is an alternative fuel which provides a clean and renewable energy source. Hydrogen can be used to power gas-type appliance and modified automobiles with water vapor as the only byproduct of combustion. Historically, production of hydrogen from coal was one of the mass production technology of hydrogen. In this paper, the status of hydrogen production process from coal was investigated to review the current situation of hydrogen production and utilization.

  • Construction equipment is a major energy consumption source in construction projects. If 10% reduction of the diesel fuel usage is achieved in the construction industry, it may reduce 5% of the total energy usage. Energy saving operation is a major issue in equipment-intensive operations (e.g., earthmoving or paving operations). Identifying optimal equipment fleet is important measure to achieve low-energy consumption in those operations. This study presents a system which finds an optimal equipment fleet by computing the low-energy performance of earthmoving operations. It establishes construction operation model and compares numerous combinations using alternative equipment allocation plans. It implements sensitivity analysis that facilitates searching the lowest energy consumption equipment fleet by enumerating all cases.

  • Biomass is considered to be a major potential fuel and renewable resource for the future. In fact, there is high potential to produce significant amount of energy from biomass around the world. In spite of the potential, there are a few efforts in biomass utilization in this nation. In this study, elemental biomass data was obtained with respect to the amount and calorific values of agricultural residues. Rice straw and husks were not included in the evaluation due to their demand from alternative uses such as livestock feedings, bedding materials, and so forth. Dry basis high calorific values are about 4,500 kcal/kg for all the agricultural residues investigated, similar to literature data. Energy densities or unit area energy value, from pepper and sesame were significant and comparable to those of woody biomass. These elemental data for biomass resources will Provide the background of Planning and development of biomass energy Program, which is getting more feasible along with advances in energy conversion technologies such as micro gas turbines.

  • Since recent electronics technologies have been developed and they tend to spend huge amount of electrical power, self-powered electronics have been paid attention worldwide. To realize self-powered electronics, energy harvesting technology, which generally converts ambient energy into electrical energy, has to be introduced. Among numerous energy sources, mechanical, thermal, and electrostatic event would be of broad interest in field of energy harvesting. Here, this article introduces the promising alternative energy concepts of nanogenerator including piezoelectric, triboelectric, and hybrid types. With these nanogenerators, we are able to apply onto not only self-powered system, but expect these open green energy market.

  • This paper proposed a multi-objective optimization method for building energy system design using primary energy consumption and initial cost. The designing of building energy systems is a complex task, because life cycle cost and efficiency of building are determined by decisions of engineer during the early stage of design. Therefore, methods such as pareto analysis that can generate various alternatives for decision making are necessary. In this study, the optimization is performed using the NSGAII and case study was carried out for feasibility of the proposed method. As a result, alternative solutions can be obtained for the optimal building energy system design.

  • The Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) have been developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) as an alternative for the effective conditioning of spent fuel far long-term storage or/and eventual disposal. This paper addresses the safeguardability of a pilot-scaled ACP facility and its sensitivity analysis. For this, a conceptual process and its material flow are analyzed using experiences from conventional fuel cycles, and measurement methods and their uncertainties are assumed for calculating MUF (Material Uncounted For) standards deviation (SD), We concluded from the preliminary analysis of the MUF SD that the pilot-scaled ACP facility with capacity of 30 MTHM/year can meet the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards goals.

  • Light olefins are very important hydrocarbons widely used as the raw materials of the most petrochemicals including plastics and medicines. In addition, the nation's olefin production capacity is regarded as one of the key indicators to predict the nation's economic scale and growth. Steam cracking of naphtha (or called "NCC (Naphtha Cracking Center) technology"), the traditional process to produce light olefins, is one of the most consuming energy processes among the chemical industries. Therefore, this process causes tremendous $CO_2$ emission. To reduce the energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission from NCC process, the present paper, firstly, investigates and analyses some alternative technologies which can be potentially substituted for traditional process. Secondly, applying the alternative technologies to NCC process, their effects such as energy savings, $CO_2$ emission reduction and CER (Certified Emission Reduction) were estimated. It is found that the advanced NCC process can reduce approximately 35% of SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) of traditional NCC process. This effect can lead to the reduction of 3.3 million tons of $CO_2$ and the acquisition of the 128 billion won of CER per year. Catalytic cracking of naphtha technology, which is other alternative processes, can save up to approximately 40% of SEC of traditional NCC process. This value equates to the 3.8 million tons of $CO_2$ mitigation and 147 billion won of CER per year.

  • A fiber processing method, which might be an alternative for conventional refining process, was introduced. The method consists of repetitive, gentle, mechanical impacts on fibers, followed by fiber uncurling process. This method was very effective for OCC and BCTMP for increasing WRVs (water retention value) while keeping fiber lengths from shortening. For OCC and BCTMP, gentle mechanical impacts on fibers using Hobart mixer increased breaking lengths and tear strengths simultaneously at fast drainage level, and straightening fibers using kady mill increased those strength properties further. For SwBKP and HwBKP, only mechanical impacts using the Hobart mixer were effective on increasing tensile and tear strength at fast drainage, but there were no further increase by kady mill treatment. The strength increases of BCTMP by this alternative fiber processing method were exceptionally high. An extensive engineering development should be followed to actualize this fiber processing mechanism in an energy-effect way.
