Fruit rot and blister canker, a disease of apple occurring severely in Korea has been studied for correct identification of the syndrome In fruit and apple trees. Among the fungi isolated from blister cankers, rough barks or fruits showing rotting of 7 different host species were Botryosphaeria berengeriana (pycnidial stage. Dethiorella mali), Penicillium expansum and Alternaria sp. from apple rots and Phomopsis sp. from pear fruit rots. The most dominant isolates were B. berengeriana. Ten isolates of D. mali were grouped in to two conidial types based up mycelial growth rate, growth habits and mycelial coloration on PDA. None of 10 isolates was chromogenic. Pycnidia in apple stems, stromatic, dark brown, globose or subglobose and the measuring were $103.5-287.5{\mu}\times92.0-287.5\mu$. The pycnidia contained hyaline, nonseptate, fusiform conidia. The sizes of pycnidiospore of isolates obtained from apple twig were $4.3-7.2{\mu}\times20.0-31.5{\mu}(average\;5.9\times25.4\mu)$. Some conidia of this fungus from apple, pear, peach and ornamental cherry showed 1-,2-,3-septate before or during germination. Microconidia were observed in pycnidia on PDA and fruit lesion of inoculated host. Symptoms on leaves and fruits were contoured brown spots when inoculated. Wart-like protuberance were formed on the surface of apple and pear. Canker appeared on branches of peach and ornamental cherry inoculated.
'Saenara' released by National Horticultural Research Institute in 1997 is a mid-season apple cultivar with attractive red skin, high quality and high productivity. This cultivar originated from the cross between 'Spur EarliBlaze' and 'Spur Golden Delicious' at Suwon in 1981. It was first selected in 1992 and named 'Wonkyo Ga-08'. The regional adaptability test was carried out for 5 years from 1993 to 1997 at 7 different sites. 'Saenara' is medium in tree vigor and has a spreading tree form. It bears abundant flower buds on many spurs. It blossoms a day earlier than 'Spur Golden Delicious', 3 days later than 'Spur EarliBlaze'. Harvesting time of 'Saenara' is September 10, 140 days after full bloom at Suwon. Fruit shape is conical and skin color is bright red. Fruit weighs about 300 g and has $14.6^{\circ}Brix$ soluble solids content. It is susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria mali Roberts).
Antifungal bacteria for biological control of plant diseases or production of novel antibiotics to plant pathogens were isolated in 1997 from various soils of Ansung, Chunan, Koyang, and Paju in Korea. Sixty-four bacterial strains pre-screened from approximately 1,400 strains were tested on V-8 juice agar against eight plant pathogenic fungi using in vitro bioassay technique for inhibition of mycelial growth. Test pathogens were Alternaria mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. orbiculare, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, Magnaporthe grisea, Phytophthora capsici, and Rhizoctonia solani. A wide range of antifungal activity of bacterial strains was found against the pathogenic fungi, and strain RC-B77 showed the best antifungal activity. Correlation analysis between inhibition of each fungus and mean inhibition of all eight fungi by 64 bacterial strains revealed that C. gloeosporioides would be best appropriate for detecting bacterial strains producing antibiotics with potential as biocontrol agents for plant pathogens.
A multifunctional antagonistic bacterium, producing both antifungal antibiotic and chitinase that could be used as biocontrol agents against fungal plant pathogens was isolated from the plant-disease suppressive soil. The isolate was identified as Promicromonospora sp. KH-28 from various morphological, biochemical and physiological tests. The antifungal antibiotic produced by Promicromonospora sp. KH-28 was soluble in n-butanol, methanol, toluene, n-hexane, ethanol but insoluble in H2O, acetone, chloroform, ethylacetate and ethylether. It inhibited the growth of fungal plant pathogens of Fusarium solani, F. oxysporum, Alternaria mali and Phytophthora capsici. The antagonistic Promicromonospora sp. KH-28 produced optimally the antifungal antibiotic when it was cultivated at pH 7, 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 days.
About 300 actinomycetes were isolated from two forest and one sea-shore soil and tested for inhibitory effects on mycelial growth of six plant pathogenic fungi Magnaporthe grisea, Alternaria mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, and Rhizoctonia solani. Among 300 actinomycetes tested, only 16 actinomycetes showed the antifungal activity against the test fungi. Isolate NH 50 was selected for production and purification of antifungal antibiotic substances. Actinomycete isolate NH 50 displayed the broad antifungal spectra against 11 plant pathogenic fungi. To identify actinomycete isolate NH 50, cultural characteristics on various agar media, diaminopimelic acid type, and morphological characteristics by scanning electron microscopy were examined. As a result, actinomycete isolate NH 50 was classified as a rare actinomycete that had LL-DAP type and did not produce spores. After incubation of isolate NH 50 in yeast extract-malt extract-dextrose broth, antifungal compound NH-B1 that inhibited mycelial growth of some plant pathogenic fungi was purified from the methanol eluates of XAD-16 resins by a series of purification procedures, i.e., silica gel flash chromatography, C18 flash chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), C18 MPLC, and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). UV spectrum and 1HNMR spectrum of antifungal compound NH-B1 dissolved in methanol were examined. The antibiotic NH-B1 showed the major peaks at 230 and 271.2nm. Based on the data of 1H-NMR spectrum, NH-B1 was confirmed to be an extremely complex polymer of sugars called polysaccharides. The antibiotic NH-B1 showed strong antifungal activity against Alternaria solani and Cercospora kikuchi, but weak activity against M. grisea.
An empirical model to predict initial disease occurrence and subsequent progress of Alternaria leaf spot was constructed based on the modified degree day temperature and frequency of rainfall in three years field experiments. Climatic factors were analized 10-day bases, beginning April 20 to the end of August, and were used as variables for model construction. Cumulative degree portion (CDP) that is over $10^{\circ}C$ in the daily average temperature was used as a parameter to determine the relationship between temperature and initial disease occurrence. Around one hundred and sixty of CDP was needed to initiate disease incidence. This value was considered as temperature threshhold. After reaching 160 CDP, time of initial occurrence was determined by frequency of rainfall. At least four times of rainfall were necessary to be accumulated for initial occurrence of the disease after passing temperature threshhold. Disease progress after initial incidence generally followed the pattern of frequency of rainfall accumulated in those periods. Apparent infection rate (r) in the general differential equation dx/dt=xr(1-x) for individual epidemics when x is disease proportion and t is time, was a linear function of accumulation rate of rainfall frequency (Rc) and was able to be directly estimated based on the equation r=1.06Rc-0.11($R^2=0.993$). Disease severity (x) after t time could be predicted using exponential equation $[x/(1-x)]=[x_0/(1-x)]e^{(b_0+b_1R_c)t}$ derived from the differential equation, when $x_0$ is initial disease, $b_0\;and\;b_1$ are constants. There was a significant linear relationship between disease progress and cumulative number of air-borne conidia of Alternaria mali. When the cumulative number of air-borne conidia was used as an independent variable to predict disease severity, accuracy of prediction was poor with $R^2=0.3328$.
The actinomycete strain PK-A41 was isolated from a soil sample from pepper fields in Ko-yang, Korea. The strain PK-A41 inhibited the mycelial growth of some plant pathogenic fungi and oomycete, Alternaria mali, Colletotrichum orbiculare, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, Magnaporthe grisea, Rhizoctonia solani, and Phytophthora capsici. The presence of LL-diaminopi-melic acid in the cell wall extract and the nucleotide sequence of the 16S rDNA region of the strain PK-A41 was assigned to Streptomyces scabiei. Further morpho-logical, biochemical, and pathological analyses also confirmed the strain PK-A41 to be S. scabiei, which is pathogenic to potato tubers. The maximum antibiotic production of the strain PK-A41 was achieved when grown on the glycerol peptone broth (GPB) medium for 9 days.
This study was conducted from 1991 to 1993 to develop a fungicidal spray program for the apples exportable to the United States of America, in which quarantine and pesticide residue in agricultural products are strictly regulated. In 1991, 2 spray schedules were applied to an orchard, in one of which the 7 fungicides registered for apple both in Korea and U.S. were used, and in the other of which the Bordeaux mixture for which the tolerance was exempted in U.S. was used 2 times along with those 7 fungicides. The apple white rot and fruit infection by Alternaria mali were not effectively controlled by the 7 fungicides alone; however, the control efficacy was raised by adding the Bordeaux mixture to the spray schedule. In 1992, 4 spray schedules were applied in which the kinds of fungicides and spray intervals were different one another. The results suggested that an effective spray program can be developed by adopting the Bordeaux mixture for 3 times or adopting the imminoctadine-triacetate which has not tolerance level in U.S. for same times in the vulnerable stage of apple white rot and alternaria blotch. In spite of the high efficacies against major apple diseases, the Bordeaux mixture could not be recommended to the apple growers due to the various defects such as restrictions in compatibility with insecticides and acaricides, troublesomeness in preparation and spray, especially the harmful effect on the finish of Fuji apples. In 1993, a spray program adopting 3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate during the growing season of apple was developed, which not only can effectively control the major apple diseases but also avoid the pesticide residue problems if it was sprayed 2 or 3 times after bagging. On the basis of the 3 years results, a basic fungicide spray program was formulated in which 1~3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate and 1~2 times of bitertanol were adopted in addition of the 7 common fungicides registered in both countries. In the results of application of the spray schedule to the actual farming in the 4 areas of Kyungpook Province in 1994, no noticeable defects were detected at the first year trial. However, this spray program will be continuously evaluated and modified to obtain better control efficacies against major apple diseases.

This study surveyed the selling, buying, usage, selection and spraying frequency of pesticides on apple orchards in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do province from 2012 to 2013 and found that the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were sprayed $13.9{\pm}3.5$, $12.6{\pm}3.2$, and $2.6{\pm}1.3$ times per year, respectively. Fungicides were applied mainly to control for Diplocarpon mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporoides and Alternaria mali, whereas insecticides were sprayed mostly to control Grapholita molesta, Carposina sasakii insects. Dealers sold pesticides without monitoring of the pests in the apple orchards, and also sometimes sold pesticides which are non-registered for apple. Most of the farmers were highly relied on dealers' recommendations to choosing the brand product. Relating on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on apple orchards in Geochang, residual active ingredient of frequently sprayed fungicides, insecticides, and acaricides were analyzed. Most applications of the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were well corresponded with FAO's recommendations. For production of safe food and use of pesticides, it is requested to develope control calender and consideration of training program for farmers. The regional characteristics and environmental situation of the farm also should be considered.

The actinomycete strain JK-1 that showed strong inhibitory activity against some plant pathogenic fungi and oomycetes was isolated from Jung-bal Mountain in Ko-yang, Korea. The strain JK-1 produced spores singly borne on sporophores and the spores were spherical and 0.9-1.2 11m in diameter. The cell wall of the strain JK-1 contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The actinomycete strain JK-1 was identified as the genus Micromonospora based on the morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. From the 168 rDNA analysis, the strain JK-1 was assigned to M aurantiaca. The antibiotic MA-1 was purified from the culture broth of M aurantiaca JK-1 using various purification procedures, such as Diaion HP20 chromatography, C18 flash column chromatography, silica gel flash column chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. $^{1}H-$, $^{13}C-NMR$ and EI mass spectral analysis of the antibiotic MA-1 revealed that the antibiotic MA-1 is identical to phenylacetic acid. Phenylacetic acid showed in vitro inhibitory effects against fungal and oomycete pathogens Alternaria mali, Botrytis cinerea, Magnaporthe grisea, Phytophthora capsici and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae at < 100 $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. In addition, phenylacetic, acid completely inhibited the growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria at < $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. Phenylacetic acid strongly inhibited conidial germination and hyphal growth of M grisea and C. orbiculare. Phenylacetic acid showed significantly high levels of inhibitory' effect against rice blast and cucumber anthracnose diseases at 250 $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. The control efficacies of phenylacetic acid against the two diseases were similar to those of commercial compounds tricyclazole, iprobenfos and chlorothalonil .n the greenhouse.
