Cross-linked starch microspheres were prepared using different kinds of cross-linking agents. The influence of several parameters on morphology, size, swelling ratio and drug release rate from these microspheres were evaluated. These parameters included cross-linker type, concentration and the duration of cross-linking reaction. Microspheres cross-linked with glutaraldehyde had smooth surface compared with those prepared with epichlorhydrine or formaldehyde. The particle size increased with increasing the cross-linking time and increasing the drug loading. Swelling ratio of the particles was a function of cross-linker type but not the concentration or time of cross-linking. Drug release from starch microspheres was measured in phosphate buffer and also in phosphate buffer containing a-amylase. Results showed that microspheres cross-linked with epichlorhydrine released all their drug content in the first 30 minutes. However, cross-linking of the starch microspheres with glutaraldehyde or formaldehyde decreased drug release rate. SEM and drug release studies showed that cross-linked starch microspheres were susceptible to the enzymatic degradation under the influence of alpha-amylase. Changing the enzyme concentration from 5000 to 10,000 IU/L, increased drug release rate but higher concentration of enzyme (20,000 IU/L) caused no more acceleration.
Stroke occurs when local thrombosis, embolic particle or the rupture of blood vessele interrupts the blood floe to the brain. $\beta$-estradiol 17-valerate has been reported to exert neuroprotective effects when administered before an ischemic insult. Recently, the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia has been studied extensively in rat with various methods. In the present study, we investigates whether $\beta$-estrodiol 17-valerate can protect against brain injury. RNA sample were extracted from the hippocampus of female rat, reverse-transcription in the presence of [$\alpha$32p] dATP. Differential gene express-ion profiles were revealed (Bone morphogenetic protein type 1A receptor, Protein disulphide isomerase, Leukemia inhibitor factor receptor, cytochrome bc- 1 complex-x core P, thiol-specific antioxidant protein). RT-PCR was used to validate the relative expression pattern obtained by the cDNA array. The precise relationship between the early expression of recovery genes and stroke is a matter of luther investigation. This Study was supported by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation(KOSEF) through the Biohealth Products Research Center(BPRC), Inje University, Korea.
Polarimetry is a powerful technique to investigate the physical properties of surface materials on airless bodies in the solar system. It is known that the degree of linear polarization changes as a function of the phase angle (the angle between Sun-target-Observer). Especially, the dependency of the polarization degree at large phase angle allows us to obtain information related to the particle size and porosity, which is difficult to be determined via other observation techniques (i.e., photometry and spectroscopy). However, despite the advantage, only a few asteroids were observed with polarimetric devices at large phase angles. Here, we present our new polarimetric research of Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) observed at the large phase angles. Among the NEAs, we focus on S- and Q-type asteroids, which include: (331471) 1984 QY1, (90075) 2002 VU94, and (66391) 1999 KW4. The observation was conducted using the Pirka 1.6-m Telescope at the Nayoro Observatory of Hokkaido University at the phase angles ${\alpha}{\sim}100degree$, which provides us the maximum polarization degrees of these objects. Considering the observational results together with two objects ((1566) Icarus and (4179) Toutatis) in reference papers [1], [2], we will discuss the implication of the regolith size on their surfaces.
$\beta$-SiC bonded SiC bodies were prepared from various conditions such as several compositions of(Si+C)/$\alpha$ -SiC ratio and different firing schedules and were respectively investigated compressive strength MOR and mi-crostructure. One firing schedule which produced the specimens that had $\beta$-SiC neck form with the highest strength was selected and experimented by each firing temperature. results obtained are as follows : 1) The amount of (Si+C) for th highest MOR of SiC-(Si+C) sintered body is 20wt% 2) By adding 20wt% content of (Si+C) and heating up to 1, 500 with soaking 3hrs respectively at 1,150$^{\circ}C$ 1,250$^{\circ}C$ 1,350$^{\circ}C$ and 1,400$^{\circ}C$ the highest MOR of fired specimen was resulted and its microstructure of ma-trix was composed of close $\beta$-SiC neck. 3) Microstructure of $\beta$-SiC were different greatly from each other by firing time and/or quantity of adding mix-ture and it was confirmed that they were composed of neck particle-like and heterogeneous texture. 4)$\beta$-SiC synthesis proceed rapidly at the temperature between 1,250$^{\circ}C$ and 1,350$^{\circ}C$ 5) All of the properties of 85 SiC-20(Si+C) specimen improved according to increasing temperature above 1,350$^{\circ}C$.
Ag-Cu alloy nano powders were fabricated by the electrical explosion of Cu-plated Ag wires. Ag wires of 0.2mm diameter was electroplated to final diameter of 0.220 mm and 0.307 mm which correspond to Ag-27Cu and Ag-68Cu alloy. The explosion product consisted of equilibrium phases of ${\alpha}-Ag$ and ${\beta}$-Cu. The particle size of Ag-Cu nano powders were 44 nm and 70 nm for 0.220 mm and 0.307 mm wires, respectively. The Ag-Cu nano powders contained less Cu than average value due to higher sublimation energy compared to that of Ag. As a result, micron-sized spherical particles formed from liquid droplets contained higher Cu content.
Hexagonal $\delta$-FeOOH was coated with Ba-Sol, which was produced by hydrolizing Ba(OC2H5)2, Ba-Sol coated $\delta$-FeOOH spread on a stainless plate, dried at 8$0^{\circ}C$ and then heat-treated. In this way, Ba-ferrite fine particles were produced. although there was a difference in a degree of hydrolysis of Ba(OC2H5)2, crystalline phase of Ba-ferrite appeared around 617$^{\circ}C$, and Ba-ferrite single phase was obtained after heat treatment at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. When Ba-ferrite was made from Ba-Sol coated $\delta$-FeOOH, $\delta$-FeOOH was thermally decomposed to $\alpha$-Fe2O3 at $700^{\circ}C$, producing a porous structure which was observed by TEM photographs. But the porous structure was not observed at 80$0^{\circ}C$. Ba-ferrite, heat-treated at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr, had mean particle size of 1000$\AA$, lattice parameter of a0=5.889243 $\AA$ and c0=23.214502 $\AA$, a saturation magnetization ($\sigma$8) of 45.3 emu/g and a coercive force (Hc) of 5200Oe.
Nanostructured spinel NiZn ferrites were prepared by the sol-gel method from metal nitrate raw materials. Analyses by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed the average particle size of NiZn ferrite was under 50 nm. The single phase of NiZn ferrites was obtained by firing at 250${\circ}C$, resulting in nanoparticles exhibiting normal ferrimagnetic behavior. The nanostructured $Ni_{1-X}Zn_XFe_2O_4$ (x=0.0∼1.0) were found to have the cubic spinel structure of which the lattice constants ${\alpha}_2$ increases linearly from 8.339 to 8.427 ${\AA}$ with increasing Zn content x, following Vegard's law, approximately. The saturation magnetization $M_s$ was 48 emu/g for x=0.4 and decreased to 8.0 emu/g for higher Zn contents suggesting the typical ferrimagnetism in mixed spinel ferrites. Pure NiZn ferrite phase substituted by Cu was observed before using the additive but hematite phase was partially appeared at $Ni_{0.2}Zn_{0.2}Cu_{0.6}Fe_2O_4$. On the other hand, the hematite phase in this NiZn Cu ferrite was disappeared after using the additive of acethyl aceton with small amount. The saturation magnetization Ms of $Ni_{0.2}Zn_{0.8-y}Cu_yFe_2O_4$(y=0.2∼0.6) as measured was about 51 emu/g at 77K and 19 emu/g at room temperature, respectively.
Lung cancer is the most prevalent global cancer, ${\sim}90%$ of which is caused by cigarette smoking. The LNT hypothesis has been inappropriately applied to estimate lung cancer risk due to ionizing radiation. A threshold of ${\sim}1\;Gy$ for lung cancer has been observed in never smokers. Lung cancer risk among nuclear workers, radiologists and diagnostically exposed patients was typically reduced by ${\sim}40%$ following exposure to <100 mSv low LET radiation. The consistency and magnitude of reduced lung cancer in nuclear workers and occurrence of reduced lung cancer in exposed non-worker populations could not be explained by the HWE. Ecologic studies of indoor radon showed highly significant reductions in lung cancer risk. A similar reduction in lung cancer was seen in a recent well designed case-control study of indoor radon, indicating that exposure to radon at the EPA action level is associated with a decrease of ${\sim}60%$ in lung cancer. A cumulative whole-body dose of ${\sim}1\;Gy$ gamma rays is associated with a marked decrease in smoking-induced lung cancer in plutonium workers. Low dose, low LET radiation appears to increase apoptosis mediated removal of $\alpha$-particle and cigarette smoke transformed pulmonary cells before they can develop into lung cancer.
In the present study, we systematically investigated the effect of mechanical milling on the magnetic properties of $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ powders produced by the reduction-diffusion process. The Sm-Fe powders obtained by the reduction-diffusion process were composed of an $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ single phase. After nitrogenation, the coercivity and saturation magnetization of the powders were 0.48 kOe and 13.32 kG, respectively. The particle size largely decreased down to less than $2\;{\mu}m$ in diameter after ball milling for 30 hours. However, there is no evidence that the $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x$ was decomposed to Sm-N and ${\alpha}$-Fe even after ball milling for 30 hours. The coercivity was significantly improved up to 8.82 kOe after milling for 60 hours. However, the magnetization decreased linearly with the ball milling time.
