Canine dermatosis associated with zinc deficiency naturally occurred in three districts of Kyungpook. A diagnosis was made by clinical findings, clinico-pathological examinations, skin biopsy, and therapeutic tests. The result was diagnosed as a zinc-deficient dermatosis. The disease occurred in rapidly growing Tosa-dog hybrids 5 to 7 months old. Skin lesions included erytherma, alopecia, crusting, scaling around the mouth, eyes, legs and tail. Clinico-pathological findings were decreased serum zinc levels, slightly increased white blood cells, and secondary Staphylococcus intermedius infection of the crusts. The skin biopsies for histopathological examination revealed marked parakeratotic hyperkeratosis. The patients with skin lesions were successfully treated by zinc methonine(Zinpro) medication In conclusion, serum zinc level and skin biopsy are very helpful in diagnosis of canine zinc-deficient dermatosis.
Background Descent of the lateral aspect of the brow is one of the earliest signs of aging. The purpose of this study was to describe an open surgical technique for lateral brow lifts, with the goal of achieving reliable, predictable, and long-lasting results. Methods An incision was made behind and parallel to the temporal hairline, and then extended deeper through the temporoparietal fascia to the level of the deep temporal fascia. Dissection was continued anteriorly on the surface of the deep temporal fascia and subperiosteally beyond the temporal crest, to the level of the superolateral orbital rim. Fixation of the lateral brow and tightening of the orbicularis oculi muscle was achieved with the placement of sutures that secured the tissue directly to the galea aponeurotica on the lateral aspect of the incision. An additional fixation was made between the temporoparietal fascia and the deep temporal fascia, as well as between the temporoparietal fascia and the galea aponeurotica. The excess skin in the temporal area was excised and the incision was closed. Results A total of 519 patients were included in the study. Satisfactory lateral brow elevation was obtained in most of the patients (94.41%). The following complications were observed: total relapse (n=8), partial relapse (n=21), neurapraxia of the frontal branch of the facial nerve (n=5), and limited alopecia in the temporal incision (n=9). Conclusions We consider this approach to be a safe and effective procedure, with long-lasting results.
Purpose: Despite a high frequency of acquired nail disease, congenital absence of the nail, also called as anonychia, is a rare anomaly. It may be seen as an isolated of phalangeal bone(ectrodactyly), nail-patella syndrome, birth trauma, impaired peripheral circulation, alopecia areata, and pemphigus, idiopathic atrophy of the nail, bullous drug eruptions, periodic shedding, lichen planus, Stenvens-Johnson syndrome and so forth. Methods: We have experienced a rare case of 40-day-old neonate, suffering from intrauterine growth retardation, but without familial history, chromosomal anomalies or any other diseases. Results: There was no nail on left 5th finger and distal phalangeal bone of same finger. So, We diagnosed as Congenital Anonychia with ectrodactyly of 5th Finger. Conclusion: We report this case as congenital anonychia of 5th finger which have developed from underlying distal phalangeal ectrodactyly. We also review other reported cased in the literatures.
Twenty eight compounds were isolated from the whole plant of Euphorbia jolkinii and evaluated for inhibitory effect on $5{\alpha}-reductase$ activity. Among the tested compounds, 1-desgalloyl eugeniin, hippomanin A, euphorbin D, exocoecarianin, rugosin E, and pentagalloyl glucose showed potent inhibitory effect on the enzyme activity. The inhibitory potency of rugosin E and euphorbin D, which are dimeric ellagitannins on $5{\alpha}-reductase$ activity, was 7-to 8-fold stronger than that of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid.
An 11-year-old female Yorkshire terrier presented with alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and pruritus. Dermatological examination revealed a large number of Demodex mites including D. cornei and D. canis. Mean length of total body length of D. cornei was one third shorter than that of D. canis. In addition, sequential analysis of DNA extracted from the skin lesions showed a 97% and 99% identity with the two sequences of D. canis and D. cornei. This is the first report of a combined infestation of D. cornei and D. canis in Korea, along with its morphological and molecular characterization.
The study was clinically performed with the 128 out patients of dermatic disease who had visited the Dept. of dermatology, Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing traditional medical college from May 2nd to February 14th 1996. The results were as follows. 1. The dermatologic findings which showed higher incidence in this study were Acne of Melasma 27 cases($21.0\%$), Psoriasis 25($19.5\%$), Eczema including Contact dermatitis 21($16.4\%$), Seborrheic dermatitis including Alopecia of hair 12($9.3\%$) and Urticaria 11($8.5\%$). 2. The sex ratio of male to female was 4.5 : 5.5. The peak incidence of age group was 30-39($21.8\%$). 3. In the duration of disease, 37 cases($28.9\%$) were between 1 year and 5 years. 27($21.1\%$) were over 10 years. 4. About the single herb drugs, they are Angelicas gigantis Radix, Paeoniae Radix and Salviae Radix in order of frequencies. In the case of pill type, Danggui gosam hwan. Chunggan hwan. Whaeo hwan and Shinnongjiyang hwan are most frequently used. In the case of topica, Whangyeongo, Juachanggo and Soeungo are used in high frequencies. 5. For the test and surgical treatment KOH surgical treatment of Molluscum contagiosum in 8 cases and the bloody treatment of Chronic psoriasis in 3 cases.

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is an immune-mediated skin disease which requires histopathology and immunohistopathology in both dogs and humans. A 10-month-old, intact female Alaskan Malamute presented for depigmentation, swelling, alopecia, erythema, and crusting on the bridge of the nose and the nasal planum. Cytological examination of nasal lesions revealed numerous cocci and neutrophils. Histopathological features included of infiltration of mononuclear cells at the dermoepidermal junction. Direct immunofluorescence tests and immunohistochemistry exhibited positive IgG, IgM, IgA, CD3, CD18, and CD79a on the epidermal basement membranes and around adnexal glands. This case indicates both T cells and B cells are related to mechanism of canine DLE. This case report describes advanced diagnostic tests and clinical outcome with immune suppressive therapy in a rare juvenile canine DLE case.
For the development of functional food for hair-growth stimulation, this study has tried an in vivo and clinical test. As an in vivo test male Sprague Dawley rats and as a clinical test 27 baldheaded or loosehaired men were recruited. Before the experiment, the total hair count in 6 $\textrm{mm}^2$ of the designated area was 46.5. In four weeks and eight weeks of the functional food feeding it increased to 61.8 and 75.3, respectively. Hence the net increase was totaled at 62% in eight weeks. Also, depilation was decreased by 28%. Before the experiment, average hair loss was 65.7. In four weeks and eight weeks of the functional food feeding it decreased to 55.2 and 47.3, respectively. LDL and phospholipids were decreased by 42% and 36%, respectively during that period. However, HDL was increased by 21%. Forty percent of the subjects responded that itching of head skin was reduced and 34% responded to have reduced dandruff. No side-effects among the subjects were examined and no other blood pa-rameters were significantly affected by the diet. The results in this study suggest that biotin-rich functional food may stimulate cholesterol and lipid metabolism and blood flow leading to the growth of new hair and prevention of hair loss.
Purpose: Women with gynecologic cancer often experience various physical and psychological symptoms relating to the cancer and its treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify symptom clusters. Method: A survey was conducted on 184 women with diagnoses of cervical, ovarian or endometrial cancer. Fifty symptoms were assessed for prevalence, severity and interference, and symptom clusters were identified. Cluster analysis was done using SPSS version 12.0. Results: Fatigue was identified as the most prevalent symptom (81.52%), lack of vaginal lubrication (2.26) as the most severe symptom, and lack of vaginal lubrication as the most interfering one (2.15). Identified six clusters were: Anorexia-pain cluster (loss of appetite, taste change, weight loss, appearance change, alopecia, weakness, pain), Fatigue cluster (lack of concentration, lack of memory, fatigue, dry mouth), Urinary-bowel distress cluster (urinary difficulty, constipation), Abdominal discomfort cluster (lower abdominal pain, abdominal pain, bloating), Emotional distress (sadness, anxiety-worry, nervousness, restlessness), and Menopausal cluster (sweating, hot flush, fever). Conclusion: The result of this study provides fundamental data to health care professionals in developing interventions for effective symptom management for women with gynecologic cancer by understanding identified 6 symptom clusters.
People are always pursuing the aesthetic feeling relentlessly. But some people have such problems with their hairs like alopecia, cancer chemotherapy, burns, and scalp injury. So the synthetic hair has played a very important role to make up for these deficiencies. But long term use can lead to adverse reactions or uncomfortable feeling. This is primarily caused by its properties differ with human hair. In particular, nanotribological characterizations (roughness, friction force and adhesive force) of synthetic hair surface are dissatisfy with the needs of normal hairs. This paper presents the experiments on nanotribological characterizations measurements of human hairs (coloring hair, permed hair and common hair) in shampooing condition or without shampooing condition. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) to find out a range of synthetic hair nanotribological characterizations which can correspond with natural hair. The measurements of nanotribological characterizations focus on surface roughness, friction force and adhesive force, and a new design of AFM probe was used for measuring the nanotribological characterizations.
