  • Pd-Ag alloy membranes have attracted a great deal of attention for their use in hydrogen purification and separation due to their high theoretical permeability, infinite selectivity and chemical compatibility with hydro-carbon containing gas streams. For commercial application, Pd-based membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need not only a high perm-selectivity but also a stable long-term durability. However, it has been difficult to fabricate thin, dense Pd-Ag alloy membranes on a porous stainless steel metal support with surface pores free and a stable diffusion barrier for preventing metallic diffusion from the porous stainless steel support. In this study, thin Pd-Ag alloy membranes were prepared by advanced Pd/Ag/Pd/Ag/Pd multi-layer sputter deposition on the modified porous stainless steel support using rough polishing/$ZrO_2$ powder filling and micro-polishing surface treatment, and following Ag up-filling heat treatment. Because the modified Pd-Ag alloy membranes using rough polishing/$ZrO_2$ powder filling method demonstrate high hydrogen permeability as well as diffusion barrier efficiency, it leads to the performance improvement in hydrogen perm-selectivity. Our membranes, therefore, are expected to be applicable to industrial fields for hydrogen purification and separation owing to enhanced functionality, durability and metal support/Pd alloy film integration.

  • In this study, Pd-Ni-Ag alloy hydrogen separation membranes were fabricated by Pd/Ag/Pd/Ni/Pd multi-layer sputter deposition on the modified MIM(Metal Injection Molding)-PSS(Porous Stainless Steel) support and followed heat treatment. Nickel, used as an alloying element in Pd alloy membranes, is inexpensive and stable material in a hydrogen isotope environment at high temperature up to 1123 K. Hydrogen perm-selectivity of Pd-Ni-Ag alloy membranes is affected not only by composition of membrane films but also by other factors such as surface properties of PSS support, microstructure of membrane films and inter-diffused impurities from PSS support. In order to clarify the effect of surface Ni composition on hydrogen perm-selectivity of Pd-Ni-Ag alloy membranes, the other effects were significantly minimized by the formation of dense and homogeneous Pd-Ni-Ag alloy membranes. Hydrogen permeation test showed that hydrogen permeability decreased from $7.6{\times}10^{-09}$ to $1.02{\times}10^{-09}mol/m{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa^{0.5}$ as Ni composition increased from 0 to 16 wt% and the selectivity for $H_2/N_2$ was infinite.

  • Surface oxides and intergranular (IG) oxidation phenomena in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration were characterized to obtain clear insight into the primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) behavior upon exposure to pressurized water reactor primary water. When hydrogen concentration was between 5 and 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O, NiFe2O4 and NiO type oxides were found on the surface. NiO type oxides were found inside the oxidized grain boundary when hydrogen concentration was 5 cm3 H2/kg H2O. However, only NiFe2O4 spinel on the surface and Ni enrichment were observed when hydrogen concentration was 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O. These results indicate that the oxidation/reduction reaction of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can considerably affect surface oxidation behavior. It appears that the formation of NiO type oxides in a Ni oxidation state and Ni enrichment in a Ni reduction (or metallic) state are common in primary water. It is believed that the above different oxidation/reduction reactions of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can also significantly affect the resistance to PWSCC of Alloy 600.

  • A NiW functional alloy plating was investigated as variables of metal ion concentration, complexing agent, temperature, pH and applied current density. Even if numerous studies on reaction mechanism of NiW induced codeposition were carried out during couples of decade, it has not been acceptable reaction mechanism. This study was focused on the effect of the plating variables on the alloy composition in the NiW alloy plating. Applied current density could control mainly the alloy composition rather than other plating variables. It has also been confirmed that the functional alloy plating such as layered or gradient plating was possible by controlling applied current density.

  • The corrosion resistance and the hardness of the tin-nickel alloy deposits electroplated in pyrophosphate bath were invesitigated according to electrolysis conditions and microstructure of the alloy. The weight loss of alloy deposits increased with the Sn content of single phase (Ni-Sn) alloy showing the lowest weight loss in the alloy with 54∼57wt% Sn. On the other hand, the multiphase alloy with 35∼42wt% Sn showed the highest one. The CASS test result was consistent with that of immersion test, and was good agreement with the corrosion data of polarization measurements. The hardness of alloy deposits decreased with the increase of Sn ratio in bath due to the grain size increase of the alloy. However, it increased noticeably with decreasing current density in the bath condition of low Sn ratio (0.1)

  • A new titanium based alloy, Ti-10Ta-10Nb, has designed to examine the improved mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A specimen of titanium alloy was melted in a consumable vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The effect of hot rolling on microstructure was estimated after rolling at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ respectively. Surface of melted alloy by consumable vacuum arc melting was consisted of rough surface and it was changed to sound surface by coating of $ZrO_2$ slurry on copper mold surface. The hardness of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy increased with the amount of${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase. Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy showed $Widmanst{\"{a}}ten$ structure by hot rolling at $800^{\circ}C$ and in the rolling ${\beta}-region$ was negligible effects on microstructure refining.

  • Copper electrodeposition on AZ91 Mg alloy was studied in views of preferential deposition on ${\alpha}$- or ${\beta}$- phases and how to achieve uniform deposition over the entire surface on ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-phases in a cyanide solution. The inhomogeneous microstructure of AZ91 Mg alloy, particularly ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-phases, was found to result in non-uniform deposition of zincate layer, preferential deposition of zincate on ${\beta}$-phases, which leads to non-uniform growth of copper layer during the following electrodeposition process. The preferential depositions of zincate can be attributed to higher cathodic polarizations on the ${\beta}$-phases. Pin-hole defects in the copper electrodeposit were observed at the center of large size ${\beta}$-phase particles which is ascribed to gas bubbles formed at the ${\beta}$-phases. The activation of AZ91 Mg alloy in hydrofluoric acid solution was used to obtain uniform growth of zincate layer on both the ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-phases. By choosing an optimum activation time, a uniform zincate layer was obtained on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface and thereby uniform growth of copper was obtained in a cyanide copper electroplating solution.

  • Magnesium alloy is the lightest practical metal. It has excellent specific strength and recyclability as well as abundant reserves, and is expected to be a next-generation structural metal material following aluminum alloy. This paper investigated the possibility of thin plate fabrication by applying a overheating treatment to the melt drag method, and investigating the surface shape of the thin plate, grain size, grain size distribution, and Vickers hardness. When the overheating treatment was applied to magnesium alloy, the grains were refined, so it is expected that further refinement of grains can be realized if the overheating treatment is applied to the melt drag method. By applying overheating treatment, it was possible to fabricate a thin plate of magnesium alloy using the melt drag method, and a microstructure with a minimum grain size of around 12 ㎛ was obtained. As the overheating treatment temperature increased, void defects increased on the roll surface of the thin plate, and holding time had no effect on the surface shape of the thin plate. The fabricated thin plate showed uniform grain size distribution. When the holding times were 0 and 30 min, the grain size was refined, and the effect of the holding time became smaller as the overheating treatment temperature increased. As the overheating temperature becomes higher, the grain size becomes finer, and the finer the grain size is, the higher the Vickers hardness.

  • Fe-Ni has been of great interest because it is known as one of low thermal expansion alloys as various application areas. This alloy was fabricated by electroforming process, and effect of heat treatment on thermal expansion and hardness was investigated. Nano-crystalline structure of 13.3 - 63.5 nm in size was observed in the as-deposited alloy. To investigate the effect of heat treatment on grain growth and mechanical/thermal properties, we conducted hardness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). From this, we confirmed these properties were varied by heat treatment. In this nano-crystalline alloy, we could observe abnormal behavior in thermal expansion between $350-400^{\circ}C$. Additionally, an abrupt change in hardness has also been observed. However, once the grains grow up to micro-sized the mechanical and thermal properties mentioned above were stabilized similar to those of bulk alloys due to heat treatment.

  • The composition and the microstructure of the Zn-Cr alloys electroplated in chloride bath with EDTA were studied according to electrolysis conditions. The cathode current efficiency decreased with increasing both Cr/(Cr+Zn) ratio and current density. The Cr content of the alloy deposits increased with Cr/(Cr+Zn) ratio and current density The phase structure of Zn-Cr alloy deposits changed from η-Zn through η-Zn+${\gamma}$'-ZnCr to ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr with increasing Cr content of alloys. The surface morphology of Zn-Cr alloy deposits changed from fine needle shaped crystallites through the mixed structure of needle-shaped and granular one to the colony structure with fine granular crystallites according to the change of phase structure
