Effect of Ni Addition on the Wear and Corrosion Resistance of Fe-20Cr-1.7C-1Si Hardfacing Alloy

  • In order to improve the corrosion resistance of Fe-20Cr-1.7C-1Si hardfacing alloy without a loss of wear resistance, the effect of Ni addition was investigated. As expected, the corrosion resistance of the alloy increased with increasing Ni concentration. The wear resistance of the alloy did not decrease, even though the hardness decreased, up to Ni concentration of 5 wt.%. This was attributed to the fact that the decrease in hardness was counterbalanced by the strain-induced martensitic transformation. The wear resistance of the alloy, however, decreased abruptly with increases of the Ni concentration over 5 wt.%.

Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Plasma Electrolytic Oxide Coatings on Aged Mg-Al alloy (플라즈마 전해 산화처리한 시효경화 Mg-Al 합금 피막의 기계적 및 전기화학적 특성)

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on cast Mg-6 wt%Al alloy solution-treated at 693K for 16h and aged at 498K. The surface roughness, thickness, micro-hardness, wear and corrosion properties of coatings on solution-treated and aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy were investigated. The coatings on aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy had thinner layer and lower micro-hardness and wear resistance than the solution-treated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy. As the aging time increased, the thickness of coatings decreased while the surface roughness was almost no changed. In addition, the micro-hardness and wear property of coatings decreased with increasing the aging time unlike the uncoated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy showing the peak micro-hardness and the best wear property after aging for 16 h. However, the coatings on Mg-6 wt%Al alloy peak-aged for 16h revealed the best corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution, which was explained based on the microstructural characteristics.

Thixo-extrusion of Semi Solid 7075 Aluminum Alloys and Mechanical Properties of The Extrudates (반응고 7075 알루미늄 합금의 반용융 압출 및 압출재의 기계적 특성)

  • Thixo-extrusion of semi-solid 7075 aluminum alloy and the mechanical properties of its extrudates were investigated. The semisolid alloy was prepared by a cooling slope cast. In other to perform thixo-extrusion, semi-solid 7075 aluminum alloy billets were reheated at the reheating conditions reported in a previous study. The maximum extrusion pressure in thixo-extrusion was 615MPa. This was lower than that of conventional hot extrusion ($P_{max}=940MPa$) at the same extrusion conditions due to the increased fluidity of the alloy billet in the semi-solid state. The values of Rockwell hardness (scale B) at the extrusion direction of the as thixoextruded bar were 48~53HRB and the difference in Rockwell hardness between the transverse direction and the extrusion direction was 5HRB or less. The results show that thxio-extrusion of semi-solid 7075 Al alloy improves the workability and anisotropic with the extrusion direction compared with hot extrusion of the conventional alloy.

Effect of Zincate Treatment of As-Cast AZ91 Mg Alloy on Electrodeposition of Copper in a Copper Pyrophosphate Bath

  • In this work, effect of zincate treatment of AZ91 Mg alloy on the following electrodeposition of copper was examined in a non-cyanide bath containing pyrophosphate ions in view of surface morphology and adhesion of the electrodeposited copper layer. Without zincate treatment, the electrodeposited copper layer showed very porous structure and poor adhesion. On the other hand, the copper layer electrodeposited on the zincate-treated surface showed dense structure and good adhesion. The dissolution rate of AZ91 Mg alloy after the zincate treatment appeared to decrease about 40 times in the copper pyrophosphate bath, as compared to that of the surface without zincate treatment. The porous morphology and poor adhesion of a copper layer on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface without zincate treatment were attributed to small number of nucleation sites of copper because of rapid dissolution of the magnesium substrate in the pyrophosphate bath. Based on the experimental results, it is concluded that the zincate treatment to form a conducting and protecting layer on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface is essential for successful electrodeposition of a copper layer on AZ91 Mg alloy with good adhesion and dense structure in the copper pyrophosphate bath.

  • The corrosion protection behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy (Mg alloy) with cathodic electrophoretic coating (E-coating) pretreated by cerium-based conversion coatings at various pH was investigated in this study. Cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) were deposited on AZ31 Mg alloy by immersion treatment in the nitrate-based cerium salt solution. The morphology and composition of the CeCCs were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The corrosion properties of the AZ31 Mg alloy pretreated with cerium coating and subsequently E-coated were studied during salt-spray testing. The surface morphologies of the E-coated Mg alloy were examined in detail after different testing times using digital photography. It was found that the protective properties of the E-coating on AZ31 Mg alloy generated are heavily dependent upon the CeCC factors such as treatment time, coating thickness and pH of the solution.

  • The present work was undertaken to investigate the mutual effect of the individual melt treatment commonly applied in aluminum foundries such as grain refining, modification, degassing and filtration on the microstructures and the mechanical properties. A357 alloys were fabricated through various melt treatments such as degassing by gas bubbling filtration, modification via the addition of Al-Sr master alloy, grain refining through the addition of Al-Ti-B master alloy and filtration before pouring of the melt. Each melt treatment was performed at its optimum condition reported in the literatures. The effects of each melt treatment and their interactions on the microstructures and mechanical properties of A357 alloy were examined.

  • We investigated the effects of the addition of Mn and $AB_5$ type alloy on the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Cr-V BCC type alloys as anode materials for Ni-MH battery. The activation behavior and discharge capacity of the BCC type alloys were significantly improved by ball-milling with the $LmNi_{4.1}Al_{0.25}Mn_{0.3}Co_{0.65}$ alloy, because the $AB_5$ type alloy acted as hydrogen path on the surface of the BCC type alloy. Among the Mn substituted alloys($Mn=0.03%{\sim}0.08%$), the $Ti_{0.32}Cr_{0.38}Mn_{0.05}V_{0.25}$ alloy ball-milled with $AB_5$ type alloy exhibited the greatest discharge capacity of $336\;mAh{\cdot}g^{-1}$. In addition, Mn substituted alloys exhibited the lower plateau pressure in P-C- T curve, the better hydrogen storage capacity and faster surface activation compared with the alloy without Mn.

  • In this research, the effect of Sc on the micro structure and mechanical properties of Al-20Si alloy powders and their extruded bar was investigated. The Al-20wt%Si and Al-20wt%Si-0.6wr%Sc powders were produced by gas atomization. The micro structures of the alloy powders and extrude was examined by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The alloy powders were subsequently canned, degassed and extruded in order to produce the alloy bulk. It was found that the micro structure of the Al-20Si alloy powder was refined and the mechanical properties was significantly improved by the addition of 0.6Sc.

  • The microstructural features of FeCoCrNi, FeCoCrNiAl and FeCoCrNiSix (x=0, 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys have been investigated in the present study. The microstructure of FeCoCrNi alloy changes dramatically with equiatomic addition of Al. The fcc irregular shaped grain structure in the as-cast FeCoCrNi alloy changes into the bcc interconnected structure with phase separation of Al-Ni rich and Cr-Fe rich phases in the as-cast FeCoCrNiAl alloy. The microstructure of FeCoCrNi alloy changes with the addition of Si. With increasing the amount of Si, the fcc structure of the grains is maintained, but new phase containing higher amount of Si forms at the grain boundary. As the amount of Si increases, the fraction the Si-rich grain boundary phase increases.

Atmospheric Corrosion of 7B04 Aluminum Alloy in Marine Environments

  • Outdoor exposure tests using of 7B04 aluminium alloy samples including plate, tensile and various SCC samples were carried out in Tuandao station, Shandong province (East of China) and Wanning station, Hainan province (South of China). Corrosion characteristics including weight loss, microstructure, tensile strength and SCC susceptibility were investigated. The corrosion rates in Tuandao and Wanning showed high to low and the corrosion rates changed to the following equation of $w=at^b$ (b<1). The corrosion of 7B04 aluminium alloy in Wanning was more serious than that in Tuandao. Pitting appeared at early stage of expose test, and it can be changed to general corrosion with test time extension. The 7B04 aluminium alloy of which specimen shapes are forging and thick plate also showed SCC (Stress corrosion cracking) in the marine atmosphere. The higher SCC sensitivity was observed in Wanning station than in Tuandao station. The 7B04 aluminium alloy with a high stress level was more sensitive to SCC. Intergranular and transgranular or a mixed mode of cracking can be observed in different marine exposure.
