  • We studied effects of alkyl($C_nH_{2n+1}$) chain length on characteristics of poly(3-alkylthiophene) electroluminescent diodes. Among the poly(3-alkylthiophene), poly(3-hexylthiophene)(n=6) and poly(3- octyIthiophene)(n=8) were mainly used for the emitting layer of the diode. The result of experiment, the emission intensity of poly(3-alkylthiophene) electroluminescent diodes depends on the alkyl chain length. Strong emission is obtained from a poly(3-alkylthiophene) diodes of long alkyl side chain length. Emission intensities are enhanced by a confinement of carriers on a main chain with a long interchain distance caused by a long alkyl side chain.

  • In this paper the electronic and optical properties of various poly(3-alkylthiophene)s differing in alkyl chain length were investigated. And their dependence on temperature were also investigated. The electrical conductivity decreased with the increase of alkyl chain length. In addition optical properties were changed due to the shift of edge energy which was caused by the change of the alkyl chain length and rise of temperature. The conformational change of poly(3-alkylthionphene) depending on the alkyl chain length is believed to be responsible to the change of electronic and optical properties of materials.

양이온 계면활성제의 알킬사슬에 따른 오염 점토 내 Cs 탈착 특성 연구 (Effect of Alkyl Length of Cationic Surfactants on Desorption of Cs From Contaminated Clay)

  • 본 연구에서는 오염된 점토 내 Cs을 제거하기 위하여, 계면활성제의 소수성 알킬사슬의 길이에 따른 Cs의 탈착특성을 연구하였다. 양이온성 계면활성제로 Alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide를 사용하였고, 소수성 알킬사슬은 octyl-, dodecyl-, cetyl- 으로 변화시켰다. 소수성 알킬사슬이 길어질수록 montmorillonite 내 계면활성제의 흡착량이 증가하였고, 계면활성제의 층간 흡착으로 층간거리가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. Cs의 탈착률도 알킬사슬의 길이가 증가함에 따라 향상되었고 cetyl 그룹을 갖는 양이온성 계면활성제는 최대 $992{\pm}2.9%$의 Cs 제거율을 나타냈다.

Highly flexible dielectric composite based on passivated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was modified with various length of linear alkyl chains and passivated to form dielectric filler. The modified SWNTs embedded into epoxy matrix to fabricate a flexible composite with high dielectric constant. The dielectric behavior of the composite was significantly changed with various alkyl chain length(n) of pyrene. The dielectric constant of the epoxy/SWNTs composite significantly increased with respect to increase in length of alkyl chain at the frequency range from 10 to 105Hz (n=12and18).We also found that the passivated epoxy/SWNTs composite with high dielectric constant presented low dielectric loss. The resulted dielectric performances corresponded to de-bundling of nanotubes and their distribution behavior in the matrix in terms of tail length of alkyl pyrene in the passivation layer.

Structural Analysis of Conductive Polypyrroles Synthesized in an Ionic Liquid

  • Nano-structured conducting polypyrroles were synthesized in the ionic liquids (ILs) based on 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium family with tetrachloroferrate as an anion ($C_n\;mim\;[FeCl_4]\;with\;n\;=\;4,\;8,\;and\;12$). The polypyrrole nanostructures synthesized in ILs were formed as spherical shapes. For ionic liquids with alkyl side chain length $C_4,\;C_4\;mim\;[FeCl_4]$, the size of particles was ranged around 60-nm with a relatively narrow size distribution. As the length of alkyl chain increases, the particle sizes become larger and their distributions become wider. The self-assembled local structures in the solvent ionic liquids are likely to serve as templates of highly organized nano-structured polymers. The length of the alkyl chain in ionic liquids seems to affect these local structures.

  • The odd-even effect of the alkyl chain length of rubbed polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) surfaces on the extrapolation length of 5CB has been successfully evaluated for the first time by measuring polar anchoring strength. The extrapolation length of 5CB for rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-numbers is small compared with odd-numbers for alkyl chain lengths of greater than 7 carbons. The extrapolation length of 5CB on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with odd-numbers increases gradually as the temperature increases but tends to diverge near the clearing temperature (Tc=$35.3^{\circ}C$). The extrapolation length diverges because of rapidly decreasing surface order near $T_c$. We suggest that the polar anchoring strength on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-number is strong because of relatively high surface ordering caused by more crystalline surfaces. Finally, we conclude that the odd-even effects of the polar anchoring strength in NLCs are strongly related to the character of the polymer and observed clearly for long alkyl chain lengths.

벤질트리알킬암모늄계 양이온성 계면활성제가 리포좀 제조와 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Benzyltrialkylammonium Type Cationic Surfactants on the Preparation and Properties of Liposome)

  • 본 연구에서는 알킬체인의 길이가 서로 다른 benzyltrialkylammonium chloride계 화합물을 합성하여 리포좀 제조에 응용하였다. 제조된 리포좀의 평균 입도분포, 제타전위, 방출거동 및 항균성을 조사하였으며, 사슬 길이에 따른 특성을 비교하였다. 리포좀의 평균 입도는 120~140 nm의 크기분포를 가졌으며 소수성 사슬의 길이가 증가할수록 큰 입자크기를 가졌다. 리포좀 용액의 제타전위는 양이온성 계면활성제인 benzyltrialkylammonium chloride를 첨가함에 따라 +80~90 mV의 값을 가지며 향상된 분산 안정성을 보였다. 방출거동에서는 사슬 길이에 따라 방출 속도를 조절할 수 있었으며 긴 사슬의 계면활성제를 첨가한 리포좀은 증가된 서방형 방출특성을 보였다. 또한, 리포좀의 포집효율은 25.9~27.5% 이었다.

Synthesis of Thiol-Functionalized Ionic Liquids and Formation of Self-Assembled Monolayer on Gold Surfaces: Effects of Alkyl Group and Anion on the Surface Wettability

  • Twenty four thiol-functionalized ionic liquids based on imidazolium cation, 1-(12-mercaptododecyl)-3-alkylimidazolium salts, have been synthesized, and utilized to investigate the effects of alkyl-chain length and anion on the wettability of Au surfaces on the basis of self-assembled monolayers presenting [(CnSAMIM)X], where n = 1-6, X = Br, $BF_4$, $PF_4$ and $NTf_2$. Water wettabilities of the surfaces were measured as a water contact angle by contact angle goniometry. It was found that water wettability of the Au surfaces coated with imidazolium ions was largely dependent not only on counter anions but also on the length of alkyl chains. In the case of SAMs of N-alkylimidazolium ions having short length of N-alkyl chain (C1-$C_4$), anions played great role in determining water wettability of the surfaces.

  • 천연계 비이온 계면활성제 APG(Alkyl Polyglucoslde)는 옥수수 성분의 글루코스와 팜, 야자유에서 얻어지는 지방 알코올을 이용하여 합성된다. 친수성인 글루코스의 중합도(D.P.=1.2~1.8)와 소수성인 alkyl chain 길이 (C8-C14)에 따른 계면특성(표면 계면장력, cmc, 기포력, effectiveness 등)을 조사한 바 중합도에는 영향이 적으나, alkyl chain 길이에는 큰 영향을 받았다. 지방산 오염에 대한 APG alkyl chain 길이별 세정력 평가를 한 결과 계면 장력이 낮을수록, 단위 면적당 흡착량이 많을수록 우수한 세정력을 나타내었으며, 그 순서는 APG 0814> APG 1214> APG 10> APG 0810> APG 08과 같다.

Odd-even Effects on the Surface Anchoring Strength and the Pretilt Angle Generation in NLC on Rubbed Polythiophene Surfaces with Alkyl Chain Lengths

  • We have investigated that the high pretilt angle of the NLC, 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), was observed on rubbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces with alkyl chains with more than 10 carbon atoms; it is attributed to the surface-excluded volume effect by the alkyl chain lengths between the LCs and the PTP surfaces. Next, we investigated that the odd-even effect of the polar anchoring strength in 5CB on rubbed PTP surfaces with alkyl chain lengths has been successfully evaluated. The anchoring strength of 5CB for rubbed PTP surfaces with odd-number is weak compared with even-number up to the 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain; however, odd-number is strong compared with even-number above 7 carbon atoms. The weak anchoring strength of 5CB is approximately $1\times10^{-3} (J/m^2$) on rubbed PTP surface with 7 carbon atoms; it is relatively strong anchoring strength. Consequently, we conclude that the odd-even effects of the polar anchoring strength in NLCs are strongly related to the characteristics of the polymer and observed clearly for short alkyl chain lengths.
