  • Despite the significant benefits of BIM (Building Information Modeling), it is not being vitalized for the facilities that are designed based on the horizontal and vertical alignments because of the lack of flexibility in manipulating surface models generated based on alignments. Alignment-based design produces a surface model in one piece through the definition of the typical cross-section along the alignment. Therefore, linking these alignment-based 3D surface models, that are not modularized and difficult to partition, to the required attribute information is very difficult This paper presents design of a flexible BIM technology suitable for the alignment-based civil infrastructure by providing the partitioning functionality for surface models, the contents library for cross-sectional design components, and the attribute information along with the critical functionalities needed for the design, construction and maintenance of alignment-based civil infrastructure.

  • Government efforts for green growth policy initiatives demand low-carbon technologies in the road construction industry. The purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm of a road alignment design solution for establishing the multi-dimensional information, and to calculate carbon emission quantity due to the geometric design elements in the planning phase of road alignment. The paper developed a calculation method for carbon emission quantity by drawing a speed profile reflected in the operating speed, acceleration and deceleration, which are majors factor of carbon emissions while driving and by applying a carbon emission factor. From this effort, it enabled alignment planning to reduce carbon emission. Object-based parametric design methods of the cross-sections were proposed for alignment planning, and the paper demonstrated a BIM-based road alignment planning solution. The proposed solutions can provide multi-dimensional information on carbon emission quantity and cross section elements through driving simulation. It is expected to allow construction of eco-friendly roads by deriving optimal road alignment to minimize environmental costs.

  • Based on the optical design type, the large aperture payload has not only a different characteristic of design, assembly and alignment but also its own merits and demerits. The analysis of characteristic has been performed according to the optical design type and based on this result, our camera is 4 reflective mirror system based on the Korsch type. Each mirror assembly is to be verified in the mirror manufacturer and the Optical Module(OM) will be assembled, aligned and tested by KARI. The final performance of camera depends on the several factors, especially, the optical performance of its OM In parallel with the optical design the conceptual design of OM assembly and alignment has been performed. In this paper, the analysis of characteristic has been performed according to the optical design type and the conceptual design of OM assembly and alignment was described with regard to optical performance.

  • PURPOSES : The lack of details of design guideline for zig-zag shaped section approaching central bus stop leads an traffic accident proneness. So, this study analysed the geometric elements of central bus stop area in terms of vehicle dynamics and suggested design alternatives. METHODS : The study analysed a dynamic behaviour of bus moving in and out of zig-zag shaped section using Auto-Turn under scenarios. Based upon dynamic analysis, the study found out the width of overtaking lane is the most influential factor for a safe moving at zig-zag alignment. RESULTS : The width of overtaking lane at design speed of 40, 50, and 60 km/h respectively was suggested given taper ratio of 1 to 10 required for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and the lane width is not wider than 4.0m which possibly makes two vehicles using the same lane. Also, the width of overtaking lane which mitigates the taper ratio was suggested with the same restriction about the maximum lane width. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the study can be used to prepare a design guideline on zig-zag shaped alignment of central bus exclusive lanes. The more stable moving is expected by applying the design alternatives suggested, therefore the lower rate of traffic crashes at the vicinity of central bus stops.

  • PURPOSES : Safety consciousness can be the first factor to hinder the acceptance of design alternative, which moderates the applied design criteria in order to adapt the road to the natural terrain condition. METHODS : The method which enables to check the safety of design alternative by using design consistency concept is suggested. The method is based on the linked or interactive analysis between terrain and road alignment. Real design example is considered as a guide how to apply the method and the analysis result is discussed with the future research. RESULTS : Suggested method can be used for designers as a tool to review their design outputs can be safe as much as the original design. So, designers have the more objective judgement on their designs and have the confidence on their designs. CONCLUSIONS : The method is expected to be used as a tool to see the safety consciousness in an objective view, so any possible conflicts between designers and design-related personnels caused by the terrain-oriented design can be solved.

  • The alignment of DNA sequences is one of the important processes in the field of bioinformatics. The Smith-Waterman algorithm (SWA) performs optimally for aligning sequences but is computationally expensive. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) performs the best on parameters such as cost, speed-up, and ease of re-configurability to implement SWA. The performance of FPGA-based SWA is dependent on efficient cell-basic implementation-unit design. In this paper, we present an optimized systolic cell design while avoiding oversimplification, very large-scale integration (VLSI)-level design, and direct mapping of iterative equations such as previous cell designs. The proposed design makes efficient use of hardware resources and provides portability as the proposed design is not based on gate-level details. Our cell design implementing a linear gap penalty resulted in a performance improvement of 32× over a GPP platform and surpassed the hardware utilization of another implementation by a factor of 4.23.

  • This paper describes a variant of the extended Gaussian image based registration algorithm for point clouds with surface color information. The method correlates the distributions of surface normals for rotational alignment and grid occupancy for translational alignment with hue filters applied during the construction of surface normal histograms and occupancy grids. In this method, the size of the point cloud is reduced with a hue-based down sampling that is independent of the point sample density or local geometry. Experimental results show that use of the hue filters increases the registration speed and improves the registration accuracy. Coarse rigid transformations determined in this step enable fine alignment with dense, unfiltered point clouds or using Iterative Common Point (ICP) alignment techniques.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to design a systematic method to estimate optimal operation conditions of design variables for an electronic device alignment system. Method: The 2-level factorial design and the central composite design are used in order to plan experiments. Based on the experiment results, a regression model is established to find optimal conditions for the design variables. Results: 3 of 5 design variables are selected as major factors that affect the alignment system significantly. The optimized condition for each variable is estimated by using a sequential experiment plan and a quadratic regression model. Conclusion: The method designed in this study provides an efficient and systematic plan to select the optimized operation condition for the design variables. The method is expected to improve inspection accuracy of the system and reduce the development cost and period.

  • When the low cost IMU is used, the result of the stationary self alignment is not suitable for navigation. In this paper, an in-motion alignment method is proposed to obtain an accurate initial attitude of a low cost IMU based GPS/INS integration system. To design Kalman filter for alignment, large heading error model is introduced. And then Kalman filter is designed to estimate initial attitude error as the indirect feedback filter. In order to assess performance of the alignment method, computer simulations are carried out. The simulation results show that initial attitude error rapidly reduces.
