The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors which affect the alienation of the aged, and to study the relative importance of these factors. This study focused on the following research questions: 1) How do the demographic variables(sex, marital status, family structure, religion, economics, prior occupation, education level) affect the alienation of the aged? 2) How the alienation of the aged is affected by their involvement in social activities? 3) Does the degree of satisfaction with family relationship have a perceivable impact on the alienation of the aged? 4) How does the self-rated senescence affect the alienation of the aged? The research was practiced from the 18th Sept. 1999 to the 30th Sept. 1988, through individual interviews with 300 elderly people, all living in Seoul area. Among them only 285 were used in the analysis. The major findings of the study are as follows; 1) The sex of the respondents makes no difference in the alienation of the age . 2) Marital status is found to be relatively significant in determining the alienation. The degree of alienation of old people with spouse is substantially lower than that of those without spouse. 3) Family structure was found to have no significantly effect on the alienation of the aged. 4) Involvement in religion was found to significantly reduce the alienation of the aged. 5) Econimic factors seems to be critical in defermining the aged. The amount of pocket money avaliable for daily use has direct relationship with alienation. 6) Prior occupation was found to be another significant factor affecting alienation professionals experience far lower alienation than nonprofessionals. 7) The higher is education level, the lower is the alienation of the aged. 8) Active participation in social activities and good relationship with other family members were founded to contribute to lowering the alienation of the aged. Whereas, too much concern over one's senescence appears to hav negative effects on the alienation. The regression analysis shows that the satisfaction with the family relationship has the most important influence upon the alienation of the aged. Following are the factors of self-rated senescence, pocket money in a descending order. All these factors, which explain 42.65% of the total variance of alienation variable are statistically significant(p<.001)
The social network services (SNS) like Facebook, have gained an enormous amount of popularity. However, side-effects of Facebook usage are occasionally reported such as sense of alienation and cyber-bullying. Among these potential factors threatening to the success of SNS, this research focused on alienation and intends to investigate possible factors that affect SNS alienation and how it affects on SNS attachment and proactive use of SNS. Through extensive literature reviews regarding online and offline alienation, SNS characteristics, and SNS usage, we generated the research model and hypotheses. We surveyed 142 Facebook users and empirically proved that among SNS characteristics, complexity increases SNS alienation, and interactivity and social presence positively affect SNS attachment. Offline alienation, one of the personal attributes, increases both SNS alienation and SNS attachment at the same time while the number of SNS friends have no significant effects. In addition, SNS alienation decreases proactive use of Facebook while SNS attachment increases it. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed based on research findings, and we also suggest future research directions to minimize negative consequences due to SNS users' sense of alienation.

Method: Data was collected by questionnairs from 204 male and 208 female students selected randomly in high schools in K city Results: This study found that depression was significantly affected by alienation, and was indirectly affected through alienation by school attachment, peer relationships, and academic performance. Suicidal thoughts were greatly affected by depression, and were directly and indirectly influenced by alienation. It was confirmed that alienation turned out to be a important mediating variable, while it had a effect significant on depression and suicidal thoughts. Also there were significant differences in affecting factors among male and female students. Conclusion: Intervention strategies for preventing alienation, depression and suicidal thoughts should be different according to gender in addition, specific nursing intervention plans, including parent education and role training programs, fostering of humanistic and achievement-focused educational environment, peer support programs, and individual counselling, need to be developed and implemented to lessen a feeling of alienation from family and school.

The aim of this study is to explore the effect of injustice perception on work alienation and the mediating role played by the employee's cynicism between injustice perception and work alienation in the healthcare sector in Oman. By utilizing a simple random sampling technique, data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of 306 nurses working in private healthcare providing organizations in Oman. The collected data was then analyzed using AMOS program through the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results of study show that the levels of perception of injustice and cynicism of nurses in the private healthcare centers were low, while the work alienation was found to be at moderate level in these healthcare organizations. The findings of the empirical study reveal that injustice perception and employee's cynicism significantly affect work alienation. The impact of injustice perception in creating employee's cynicism was also observed. The hypothesis that the mediating role played by employee's cynicism in injustice perception and work alienation relationship was partially supported. Moreover, injustice perception and cynicism directly affect work alienation, therefore, these hospitals should consider organizational policies and procedures to achieve equality and justice among nursing personnel, and to eliminate the factors that cause cynicism and work alienation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of alienation, depression, suicidal ideation and delinquency in high school students and to explore the relationships between the variables. The respondents, 226 students attending a high school located in Chonnam province made up the convenience sample. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire which included the alienation scale, suicidal ideation scale, BDI, and delinquency scale. Data collection was done between June 20 and July 6, 2001. Data were analyzed with the SAS program and included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients. There were no significant association between alienation and general characteristics of the students. The scores for depression were significantly higher in female students, in students who had recently dropped in their school ranking compared to students who had improved. The scores of suicidal ideation were significantly higher in male students. Also, the scores of delinquency were significantly higher in male students, and students in the high economic class and those with low school rankings. There were significant positive correlations between alienation and other ; alienation and depression (r= .432, p= .000), alienation and suicidal ideation (r= 267. p= 000), and alienation and delinquency (r= 150, p= .024). Findings from this study suggest that subsequent practical study in consideration of Korean sociocultural background is needed to identify the cause of alienation and develop supportive strategies to maintain mental health in high school students. Also, study on alienation of students should be based on family, community and popular culture in combination with improvements in school environment.
Purpose: This study was performed to identify the influencing factors on alienation among high school students. Method: Data was collected by questionnaires from 550 students of academic and vocational high schools in G city. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The scores of alienation among students in financially lower middle class and lower class were higher than those of the upper middle class students, resulting in significant differences(F=6.87, p=.00). A sense of alienation showed a significantly negative correlation with the scores of responding parenting style(r=-.32), family cohesion(r=-.33), school attachment(r=-.51), academic performance(r=-.34), peer relationships(r=-.38), self-control(r=-.43), and social skills(r=-.33). The most powerful predictor of alienation among high school students was school attachment and the variance explained was 26%. A combination of school attachment, self control, peer relationships, family cohesion, demanding parenting style, and academic performance account for 40% of the variance in alienation among high school students.
