Masan-Jinhae Bay, in Korea, is known for its frequent algal bloom outbreaks. This study was conducted in order to examine the environmental characteristics of the area, with the aim of identifying indicators that could be used to speculate about future algal blooms. The water temperatures and salinities in Haengam Bay, one of the small inner bays within Jinhae, appeared to re relatively higher than those in Masan and Jinhae bays, across most seasons. Furthermore, stratification begins to develop in all three regions from spring to summer as a result of the local heating effects and an increase in the efficient from the surrounding land. As a result, anoxic conditions appear near the bottom layer of the bay, leading to the deterioration of water quality, which has been identified as one of the causes of bloom outbreaks. Compared to Haengam and Jinhae bays, concentrations of DIN and DIP were remarkably higher in Masan Bay. However, the mean ratio of DIN to DIP was 3.3$\sim$13.6 in all three regions throughout the year, suggesting that nitrogen can function as a growth-limiting factor for phytoplankton. The results of mathematical models showed that cumulative organic pollutants may be a trigger for direct algal bloom occurrences, since residual tidal currents appeared to be less than $3\;cm\;\cdot\;s^{-1}$. Furthermore, computed DO concentrations in the four small inner bays of Jinhae during the summer appeared to be $3\;cm\;\cdot\;l^{-1}$ indicating a hypoxic state. Likewise, computed Chl-a concentrations turned out to be more than $0.01\;mg\;\cdot\;l^{-1}$, indicating eutrophication across most seasons. Based on the overall results, Masan-Jinhae Bay appeared to possess a very high potential for algal bloom outbreaks at anytime during the year.
In this study, we analyzed the value of Chl-a by histogram to classify the points where algal management is required. The degree of algal bloom by point was analyzed using the ogive curve, and the algal control points were classified into three stages according to the shape of the frequency distribution table. Of the four major rivers, low concentration of Chl-a appeared most frequently in the Han River, while the high concentration of Chl-a was frequently found at the points of the Geum and the Yeongsan Rivers. In the case of the Han River, no apprehensive areas were found thatrequire intensive management, while most points on the Geum and the Yeongsan Rivers required algal management. Finally, the Nakdong River basin was identified as points requiring algal management from the mid to downstream. The results of this study have confirmation of the possibility that the frequency distribution could be used as a supplementary indicator to express the algal bloom.

The primary objective of this study was to gain insight into the characteristics of algal blooms in relation to the marine environment of the Korean Southern Coast, using more than 22 years worth of data since the first known occurrence of algal blooms. Algal blooms tend to occur when the precipitation or water temperature for a ten-day period prior to the annual bloom exceeds the long-term mean value. There are three notable causative species in six different inner bays, namely Prorocentrum sp., Skeletonema costatum, and Heterosigma akashiwo, and in addition, these three species appeared in different conditions of water temperature and salinity at each region.
Cochlodinium polykrikoides has occurs regularly during the summer in the South Sea of Korea. To investigate photosynthetic pigments concerned with phytoplankton community structure as bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides, the experiment was sampled at 20 stations three times between July and September 2002 in the Southern Sea of Korea. The distribution of peridinin, the biomarker of dinoflagellate, was higher at the blooming time than it was before and it disappeared after bloom. The correlative coefficients between Chl. a and peridinin at the blooming time and out of bloom were 0.9253 and 0.1613, respectively. This result indicated that the bloom was caused by dinoflagellate. The correlative coefficients between Chl. a and fucoxanthin were 0.3282 and 0.9759, respectively, and the correlative coefficients showed the succession from dinoflagellate to diatom. This result means that the bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides can be detected by Chl. a information from satellite remote sensing. Therefore, if the algorithm to detect peridinin in addition to Chl. a were to be developed, dinoflagellate red tide could be monitored more effectively.
The water quality and algal communities in the Daechung Reservoir, Korea, were monitored from summer to autumn in 1999 and 2001. Although the average weekly precipitations during June and July were very similar in 1999 and 2001, they were much different during August and September, the so-called blooming season. The rainfall in 1999 increased about 70% after late August, whereas it decreased to the one-fifth level in 2001. The higher concentrations of chlorophyll- a, phycocyanin, and cyanobacteria were observed in 2001, which resulted in the dense algal bloom. In addition, in 2001, the cyanobacterial percentage remained above 80% during the investigation period, and the cyanobacteria were exclusively composed of Microcystis spp. Conversely, there was no report on the algal bloom in 1999. However, the peak bloom seasons were the same for both years, from late August to early September, irrespective of the amount of precipitation. These results suggest that the magnitude and duration of rainfall before bloom season are important factors determining the extent of cyanobacterial bloom in this system.
Jundae reservoir has basin area of 234ha, average depth of 3.77m and total storage of $619{\times}10^3m^3$, and is located in Dangin-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The water quality of Jundae reservoir exceeded the IV grade of water quality standard as available for irrigation water in COD, TN, TP, Chl-a. COD and Chl-a were higher in spring season, because the algal bloom by phytoplankton increased. And the algal blooms in October by inflow non-point pollution during summer rainy season. The most dominant zooplankton was rotifers during study period at all stations. Dominant species were Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra spp., and Trichocerca spp. We successfully established 2 isolated clone cultures as predator. One is Rotifer, Euchlanis sp. and another is cladocerans, Bosmina sp. To test the removal rate of 2 cultures against Microcystis aeruginosa, we inoculated Euchlanis sp. and Bosmina sp. separately when the abundance reached at $1.0{\times}10^6$cells/ml. Euchlanis sp. removed M. aeruginosa around 98.9% and Bosmina sp. removed it around 98.4%. They are useful grazers for controling algae blooms, Euchlanis sp. and Bosmina sp. feeding on M. aeruginosa highly.
Genus Prorocentrum of dinoflagellate has been known as representative causative algae of red tide in Masan-Jinhae Bay. Prorocentrum populations- P. dentatum Stein, p. micans Ehrenberg, P. minimum (Pavillard) Schiller and P. triestinum Schiller- were monitored from January 1990 to August 1997, Prorocentrum populations usually have bloomed during the water stratification periods from June to August. Water temperature ranged from 24$^{\circ}C$ to 28$^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 24$\textperthousand$ to 34$\textperthousand$ during the Prorocentrum blooms. Bloom magnitude of Prorooentrum populations gradually increased from offshore to inshore area of coastal embayment and this populations tended to concentrate from surface to 2.5m depth. Prorocentrum algal blooms have become more frequent and intense than those of 1980s and early 1990s. P. minimum was the most persistent species in terms of bloom frequency and cellular abundance.

The objective of study was to determine an optimal location of a float-type curtain weir in Daecheong Reservoir and to assess its effectiveness for the control of algal blooms in the reservoir. CE-QUAL-W2, a laterally averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model, was modified to accommodate vertical displacement of the weir according to water surface fluctuation and applied to simulate the reservoir hydrodynamics and water quality changes for the reservoir. The model calibrated in a previous study was updated and validated for different hydrological conditions representing drought year (2008) and normal year (2006) for the study, and adequately simulated the temporal and spatial variations of water temperature, nutrients and algal (Chl-a) concentrations. The effectiveness of curtain weir on the control of algal bloom was evaluated by applying the validated model to 2001 and 2006 assuming 9 scenarios for different installation locations. The reduction rates of algal concentration were placed in the range of 11.2~40.3% and 20.3~56.7% for 2001 and 2006, respectively. Although, the performance of curtain weir was slightly varied for different locations and different hydrological years, overall, the performance was improved as the weir was installed further downstream.

This study presents the potentiality of harmful algal bloom (HAB) control through the zooplankton, Daphnia magna. In case of co-cultivated D. magna with cyanobacteriums (Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena variabilis, and Limnothrix planctonica), the D. magna showed the $80.2{\pm}4.2%$, $39.7{\pm}4.0%$, and $25.9{\pm}10.9%$ of control efficiency for M. aeruginosa, A. variabilis and L. planctonica, respectively. Furthermore, algal control was investigated by using supernatant including metabolite/secretion of D. magna. The algal control efficiencies of supernatant were recorded as $24.9{\pm}9.9%$ and $8.9{\pm}4.0%$ for M. aeruginosa and A. variabilis, respectively. From the results of present study, it may be possible to provide a feasible way for development of eco-friendly HAB control methods.

Cochlodinium polykrikoides is a typical harmful algal species which generates the red-tide in the coastal zone, southern Korea. Accurate algal growth model can be established and then the prediction of the red-tide occurrence using this model is possible if the information on the optimal growth model parameters are available because it is directly related between the red-tide occurrence and the rapid algal bloom. However, the limitation factors on the algal growth, such as light intensity, water temperature, salinity, and nutrient concentrations, are so diverse and also the limitation function types are diverse. Thus, the study on the algal growth model development using the available laboratory data set on the growth rate change due to the limitation factors are relatively very poor in the perspective of the model. In this study, the growth model on the C. polykrikoides are developed and suggested as the optimal model which can be used as the element model in the red-tide or ecological models. The optimal parameter estimation and an error analysis are carried out using the available previous research results and data sets. This model can be used for the difference analysis between the lab. condition and in-situ state because it is an optimal model for the lab. condition. The parameter values and ranges also can be used for the model calibration and validation using the in-situ monitoring environmental and algal bloom data sets.
