Here, we introduce a means of utilizing waste oyster shells which were obtained from temporary storage near coastal workplaces as $CO_2$ adsorbents. The calcined CaO can be easily dissociated to $Ca^{2+}$ cation and $CO_3{^{2-}}$ anion by hydrolysis and gas-liquid carbonation reaction and converted to precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) in algae-containing water. The calcium hydroxide and carbonation combination in algae-containing water significantly contributed to improving water quality which is very dependent on the addition amount of calcined powders.
The seasonal change in attached algae and microbial community structure at sedimentation basin of water treatment plant was investigated by using quinone profiles and denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis (DGGE). The photosynthetic bacteria and algae contains PQ-9 and VK-1 as major quinone are major component of the total quinone fraction in attached algae and microorganisms on sedimentation basin trough. The microorganisms containing menaquinones appear to be sensitivity to the change in temperature than those containing ubiquinones. The plot of the mole fraction of dominant quinone species ($f_d$) to the DQ values showed higher sensitivity to the seasonal change in the microbial community structure. The results indicated that quinone and DGGE are useful tool for the evaluation of the changes in the microbial community structure.
The effect of permanganate oxidation was investigated as water treatment strategy with a focus on comparing the reaction characteristics of NaOCl and sodium permanganate (NaMnO4) in algae (Monoraphidium sp., Micractinium inermum, Microcystis aeruginosa)-contained water. Flow cytometry explained that chlorine exposure easily damaged algae cells. Damaged algae cells release intracellular organic matter, which increases the concentration of organic matter in the water, which is higher than by NaMnO4. The oxidation reaction resulted in the release of toxin (microcystin-LR, MC-LR) in water, and the reaction of algal organic matter with NaOCl resulted in trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration increase. The oxidation results by NaMnO4 significantly improved the concentration reduction of THMs and MC-LR. Therefore, this study suggests that NaMnO4 is effective as a pre-oxidant for reducing algae damage and byproducts in water treatment process.
Succeeding the previous papers, nineteen species of marine green algae and threee species of fresh water green algae are analyzed to the free amino acid patterns by paper chromatogram, and it has been described as containing significant qualities of the pattern in relation to phylogenetic studies. Those seem to have a tendency of recognizable pattern on inter-Orders and inter-Phyla of marine algae. And the patterns of fresh water and marine green algae are also carried out referring to these studies.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the prechlorination on algal removal by application of a varying amount of different coagulants, such as LAC, PAC, PACS following the process of coagulation and sedimentation of algae in the Nakdong River. The samples used as a source for the raw water of the Nakdong River were collected from the D Water Purification Plant in Taegu city. With the application of the process of prechlorination, the removal rate of the algae was increased from 10~25% for Synedra spp., 20~35% for diatoms and 4~17% for turbidity. Generally, the removal rate of the algae was increased with the increase of the concentration of the coagulants. The PAC and PACS showed 5% higher removal rate for turbidity as compared to the LAS. On the hand, LAS showed 12% higher removal rate for Synedra spp. as compared to the PAC and PACS. The variations in the removal rate of diatoms with the change of coagulant were not significant. In conclusion, the application of LAS, polymeric coagulant and chlorination for at least 20 minutes could be considered as a reliable treatment process for the removal of source water containing a variety of algae.
Potential feasibility of nutrients removal and biofuel production with microalgae was evaluated in batch culture. Distribution of microalgae in fresh water including reservoir and river was investigated to search for the species with high content of lipid that could converted into biofuel. Green algae, Chlorella and Scenedesmus sp., these are known as species containing high lipid content for biodiesel production, were observed in both summer and autumn season. However another highly lipid-containing species, botryococcus sp. was not observed in this study. In mixed culture of microalgae using synthesized wastewater medium, green algae were found to be dominant, comparing to other species of diatoms and blue-green algae. And microalgae were also capable of removing nitrogen and phosphorus in batch experiments. During the culture period of 14 days, removal efficiencies of nitrate and phosphorus were 30% and 82%, respectively. Furthermore, content of the intracellular lipid extracted from algae cell was as favorable as 12-30% in the mixed culture where Scenedesmus and Chlorella sp. were dominant. Therefore the mixed culture of microalgae could be applied to biofuel production and tertiary wastewater treatment, even though there are economic barriers to overcome.

Conventional coagulation is still the main treatment process for algae removal in water treatment. The coagulation efficiency can be significantly improved by the preoxidation of algae-containing water. Jar test was conducted to determine the optimal condition for the removal of diatoms, especially Cyclotella sp. by preoxidation and the subsequent coagulation. The effects of various concentration of PAC (Polyaluminum chloride) on coagulation with and without preoxidation using chlorine or potassium permanganate at different pHs (7.7 and 9.0) were evaluated. At pH 7.7, preoxidation with 2ppm $Cl_2$ followed by coagulation with 7.5 ppm PAC coagulant could reduce Cyclotella sp. concentration by 86%. At pH 9.0, preoxidation with 1 mg $KMnO_4/L$ followed by coagulation with 12.5 ppm PAC coagulant reduced Cyclotella sp. concentration by 85%. Non-linear regression was applied to determine the optimal condition. At pH 7.7 and 9.0, R was over 0.9, respectively. The pH of algal blooming water is over 9.0. Algae (diatom; Cyelotella sp.) can be controlled in the following ways: preoxidation with 1 mg $KMnO_4/L$ followed by coagulation with 12.5 ppm PAC coagulant can remove 80% algae from water. If water pH is adjusted to 7.7, it was expected that less amount of coagulant (7.5 or 10 mg PAC /L) after preoxidation ($Cl_2$ 2 ppm or $KMnO_4$ 0.33, 1 ppm) would be needed to achieve similar level of algae removal. The oxidation with 0.33ppm $KMnO_4$ followed by coagulation with 7.5 ppm PAC coagulant was preferable due to cost-effectiveness of treatment condition and color problem after treatment.
The specie composition, stranding crops and the dominant species of phytoplankton were studied in three streams, Namdae-stream, Yeongok-stream and Sacheon-stream from May 2008 to February 2009. The water qualities of the three streams which run into estuary were also examined using phytoplankton indicators. As the result, the phytoplankton appeared 94 taxa in Namdae-stream, 79 taxa in Yeongok-stream and 73 taxa in Sacheon-stream, diatoms appeared the most in phytoplankton. Genus Navicula and Cymbella in diatoms appeared to be over 10 taxa in each stream, N. cryptocephala, N. cryptotenella and N. gregaria, the pollution tolerance taxa, appeared more frequent in the downstream. Due to the separation of each substrate by the rapid water velocity in the upstream, Achnanthes minutissima, a known periphyton, was dominant in upstream site at Namdae and Yeongok-stream. Some construction areas and sites of downstream of Namdae-stream, Yeongok-stream and Sacheon-stream were shown to be polluted because pollution tolerance taxa, such as Cyclotella meneghiniana, Nitzschia palea and Oscillatoria limnetica, were dominant. The total of 20 taxa phytoplankton indicators were found, composed of 16 taxa of Water pollution algae including Oscillatoria limosa, 2 taxa of Clean water algae Meridion circulare and Staurastrum puntulatum, 1 taxa of Toxic algae Microcystis aeruginosa and 1 taxa of Taste and odor algae Fragilaria construens. Water pollution indicators were appeared frequently in polluted sites of biological water quality(DAIpo, TDI) and of sites containing high trophic state index(TSI). Therefore, using the phytoplankton indicators can assess water quality through relation of biological water quality and trophic state index.
This study used a batch DAF (dissolved air flotation) jar tester to evaluate the algae removal efficiency of alum and PAC coagulants during coagulation, flocculation, and flotation. Optimal coagulant dosages were 0.06 ~ 0.15 mL/L (12.0 ~ 26.0 mg Al/L,17%), 0.08 ~ 0.20 mL/L (10.0 ~ 24.0 mg Al/L, 12%), 0.25 ~ 0.30 mL/L (25.0 ~ 30.0 mg Al/L, 10%) for PAC, and 3.0 ~ 5.0 mL/L (81.0 ~ 135.0 mg Al/L, 2.7%) for alum. Turbidity of treated water was 1.0 ~ 2.0 NTU in optimal coagulation, flocculation, and flotation conditions for the four coagulants types. The amount of coagulant injected tended to decrease with increasing Al content in the coagulant, as follows : 17% PAC < 12% PAC < 10% PAC < 2.7% alum. Turbidity removal efficiencies were in the order of 12% PAC (93.6%) > 10% PAC (92.7%) > 17% PAC (91.3%) > 2.7% Alum (88.1%).
