We report on the NO gas sensing properties of non-directional ZnO nanofibers synthesized using a typical electrospinning technique. These non-directional ZnO nanofibers were electrospun on an $SiO_2$/Si substrate from a solution containing poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate dissolved in distilled water. Calcination processing of the ZnO/PVA composite nanofibers resulted in a random network of polycrystalline ZnO nanofibers of 50 nm to 100 nm in diameter. The diameter of the nanofibers was found to depend primarily on the solution viscosity; a proper viscosity was maintained by adding PVA to fabricate uniform ZnO nanofibers. Microstructural measurements using scanning electron microscopy revealed that our synthesized ZnO nanofibers after calcination had coarser surface morphology than those before calcination, indicating that the calcination processing was sufficient to remove organic contents. From the gas sensing response measurements for various NO gas concentrations in dry air at several working temperatures, it was found that gas sensors based on electrospun ZnO nanofibers showed quite good responses, exhibiting a maximum sensitivity to NO gas in dry air at an operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. In particular, the non-directional electrospun ZnO nanofiber gas sensors were found to have a good NO gas detection limit of sub-ppm levels in dry air. These results illustrate that non-directional electrospun ZnO nanofibers are promising for use in low-cost, high-performance practical NO gas sensors.

A copper tetracumylphenoxy phthalocyanine (CuPccp) thin film was formed on an organic insulator film by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition for gas sensor fabrication. To increase the reproducibility of film transfer, stearyl alcohol was used as a transfer promoter. The structural properties of the CuPccp layers were optically monitored through attenuated total reflection and polarization-modulated ellipsometry techniques. The average thickness of a single layer of the CuPccp LB film was measured to be 2.5 nm. Despite the role of the transfer promoter, the stability of the layer transfer was not sufficient to ensure homogeneity of the LB film. This was probably due to the presence of aggregates in the molecular structure of the CuPccp LB film. Nevertheless, copper phthalocyanine polymorphism can be greatly suppressed by the LB arrangement, which appears to contribute to the improvement of electrical conductivity. The p-type semiconductor characteristics were confirmed by Hall measurements from the CuPccp LB films.

In this paper, two methods of making the Pd-added $SnO_2$ ($Pd-SnO_2$) powder with pure tetragonal phase by the hydrazine method were suggested and compared in terms of crystal structure, surface morphology, and alcohol gas response. One of the addition methods is to use $PdCl_2$ as a Pd source, the other is to use Pd-based organic with oleylamine (OAM). When Pd concentration was increased from 0 to 5 wt%, the average grain size of $Pd-SnO_2$ made with Pd-OAM were decreased from 32 to 12 nm. In the case of using with $PdCl_2$, grain size of the $PdCl_2$ fell to less than 10 nm. However, agglomerated and extruded surface morphology was observed for the films with Pd addition over 4 wt%. The crack-free $Pd-SnO_2$ thick films were able to successfully fill the $30{\mu}m$ gap of patterned Pt electrodes by optimized ink dropping method. Also, the 2 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film made with PdCl2 showed gas responses ($R_{air}/R_{gas}$) of 3.7, 5.7 and 9.0 at alcohol concentrations of 10, 50 and 100 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the prepared 3 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film with Pd-OAM exhibited very excellent responses of 3.4, 6.8 and 12.2 at the equivalent measurement conditions, respectively. The 3 wt% $Pd-SnO_2$ thick film with Pd-OAM has a specific surface area of $31.39m^2/g$.
In this paper, the solvent sensing properties of the metallophthalocyanine macrocyclic compounds(ZnPc) have been deposited as thin films by the spin-coated method and evaporated methods onto alumina substrates and quartz substrates. And then the spin-coated materials of Zinc phthalocyanine solutions blended with $N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthyl)-1,\;1-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine\;and/or\; Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene]$ solutions. The influences of the blended metallophthalocyanine macrocyclic compounds on the resistance have been measured and analysed in five different vapour organic compounds.
The sensing and electrical characteristics of $WO_{3}$-based n-type semiconductor gas sensors are investigated. In normal air condition, $TiO_{2}$(4 wt. %)-doped $WO_{3}$-based sensor fabricated without any binder shows the grain boundary ( GB ) potential barrier height of 0.26 V. Sensors fabricated with alumina, PVA and silica sol binders show 0.17, 0.22 and 0.26 V of GB potential barrier height, respectively. In the ambience of 120 ppm $NO_{x}$ concentration, the GB potential barrier height of the sensor fablicated without binder is increased to 0.59 V. The sensors were fabricated with alumina, PVA, silica sol binders show 0.43, 0.66 and 0.52 V of potential barrier, respectively. Thus the variation of the potential barrier at GB is largest in the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder. This is found to be the main reason why the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder shows the best sensitivity. It is also found that the decrease of sensitivity at a temperature higher than the optimum operation temperature is due to the temperature dependence of the sensor resistance in normal air condition rather than the desorption of the adsorbed $NO_{x}$ gas particles. In the ambience of 250 ppm CO concentration, the GB potential barrier heights of the sensors fabricated without binder and with PVA binder are about 0.2 V showing negligible change compared to the case of normal air ambience. This fact indicates that these sensors are good candidates for the selective detection of $NO_{x}$ gas in the mixture of CO and $NO_{x}$ gases.
A unique optical waveguide structure is proposed to enhance the optical characteristics of alcohol screening sensors. This structure is then simulated. The structure consists of two elliptical waveguides that have a common focus to one side and has an IR source and detector at each of the other focal points of the ellipses. When the angle between the two elliptical waveguides is increased from 30 degrees to 90 degrees, the maximum level of irradiance is greatly decreased, falling from $2.23{\times}10^6 W/m^2$ to $5.74{\times}10^5W/m^2$. However, the diameter of the incident rays is at a minimum of 1.86mm and the total incident flux is less than 10% lower when compared to the structure at $90^{\circ}$. It can be seen from the simulation results that this structure might enhance the sensitivity of an optical gas sensor which has a large absorption wavelength.
A FET(Field Effect Transistor) type dissolved $CO_2$ sensor based on Severinghaus type $CO_2$ sensor was fabricated by the photolithographic process. The sensor consists of Ag/AgCl reference electrode and membranes (hydrogel membrane and $CO_2$ gas permeable membrane) on the pH-ISFET base chip. Ag/AgCl reference electrode was fabricated as follows. Ag layer was thermally evaporated and then its upper surface was chemically chloridized into the AgCl. The hydrogel used as an internal electrolyte solution was fabricated by a photolithographic method using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) and acrylamide. $CO_2$ permeable membrane on the top of the hydrogel layer was formed by photolithographic process with UV-oligomer. The FET type $pCO_2$ sensor fabricated by photolithographic method showed good linearity within the concentration range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^0mole/{\ell}$ of dissolved $CO_2$ in aqueous solution with high sensitivity.
In this work, $SnO_2$ modified with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) separately and combined sensitized by using the co-precipitation method and their sensing behavior toward ethanol vapor at room temperature were investigated. An interdigitated electrode (IDE) gold substrate is very expensive compared to a fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate; hence, we used the latter to reduce the fabrication cost. The structure and the morphology of the studied materials were characterized by using differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size measurements. The studied composites were subjected to ethanol in its gas phase at concentrations from 10 to 200 ppm. The present composites showed high-performance sensitivity for many reasons: the incorporation of $SnO_2$ and CNTs which prevents the agglomeration of rGO sheets, the formation of a 3D mesopourus structure and an increase in the surface area. The decoration with rGO and CNTs led to more active sites, such as vacancies, which increased the adsorption of ethanol gas. In addition, the mesopore structure and the nano size of the $SnO_2$ particles allowed an efficient diffusion of gases to the active sites. Based on these results, the present composites should be considered as efficient and low-cost sensors for alcohol.

Zinc oxide has semi-conductivity and super conductivity characteristics. It can be used optically and is applied on many areas such as gas sensor, solar cell and optical waveguide. In this paper, to improve optical characteristics of ZnO, aluminum was added on zinc oxide. Zinc oxide and aluminum zinc oxide was fabricated as nano fiber form. ZnO solution was created by mixing poly vinyl pyrrolidone, ethyl alcohol, and zinc acetate. An Al doped ZnO was created by adding aluminum solution to ZnO sol. By applying these sols on electro spinning method, nano fibers were fabricated. These fibers are heat treated at 300, 500, and $700^{\circ}C$ degrees and were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the nano structures. TGA and DSC measurement was also used to measure the change of mass and calorie upon temperature change. The absorbance of ZnO and Al-doped ZnO was carried out by UV-vis measurement.

Solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS), electronic nose, and electronic tongue were used to characterize the sensory profiles of cider vinegars from Korea (K1-2), China (C1-2), Japan (J1-2), and US (U1-2). SPME-GC/MS detected acetic acid as the common volatile compound in all vinegars, in addition to isovaleric acid, octanoic acid, and phenethyl acetate. Acids and acetic esters were the major components of Korean and US vinegar samples, respectively. Chinese vinegars had high ethyl acetate content, while Japanese samples were characterized by a low content of acetic acid. Principal component analysis (PCA) pattern provided a clear categorical discrimination of Chinese vinegars by E-nose and E-tongue analyses. The instrumental sensory scores and the taste attributes for flavor ($r^2=0.9431$), sourness ($r^2=0.9515$), and sweetness ($r^2=0.8325$) were highly correlated. Therefore, SPME/GC-MS, E-nose, and E-tongue analyses may be useful tools to discriminate the sensory profiles of cider vinegars of different origins.
