Purpose: This study was to explore the prevalence of alcohol experiences and to identify the expectancy on the effects of alcohol and alcohol knowledge in early adolescents. Method: The cross-sectional survey of 1854 students from seven middle schools in one district of Seoul was conducted by convenience sampling. Alcohol experience and early onset of alcohol use were measured by the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Alcohol expectancy was measured by an Alcohol Effects Questionnaire. Result: Over sixty five percent of adolescents reported that they had previous drinking experiences. The participants with no alcohol drinking experience had a lower level of alcohol knowledge than those with experience(t=2.73, p=.007). In expectancy on effects of alcohol, girls had a more positive alcohol expectation than boys(t=-2.54, p=.011). Alcohol knowledge negatively correlated with alcohol expectancy(r=-.40 p=.000). In regression of alcohol expectancy, gender and alcohol knowledge were significant predictors explaining 17%. Conclusion: The results support that alcohol expectancy is an important link with early drinking experiences and alcohol knowledge, focusing on the importance of gender differences. Therefore, an alcohol prevention program in early adolescence is needed and should be focused on multidimensionality of the alcohol expectancy with developmental and psychosocial factors for early adolescents.

Researchers' common findings is that there are positive or negative effect of alcohol expectancy on drinking behavior. Therefore we would effectively prevent troublesome drinking of the youth and university students by inquiring and controlling critical factors affecting alcohol expectancy. The purposes of this thesis are, first, to empirically test factors affecting the alcohol expectancy level of elementary schoolchild(potential drinker).; second, to suggest the necessity for development of pre-alcohol prevention programs. On the basis of previous research, eighteen factors included in four categories(general characters, environmental characters, alcohol knowledge, drinking experience) affecting alcohol expectancy level were found out. 623 subjects used in this study were drawn from 8 elementary schools in Daegu, Korea. The empirical results suggested that the alcohol expectancy level of elementary schoolchildren was negative in general. And it was proved that 9 factors were significantly correlated with alcohol expectancy level. To put it concretely(see Fig.), (1) It was proved that schoolchildren with bad environment(live in oneself, displeased drinking feeling) rather than good environment(live with parents, nice drinking feeling) for drinking had more negative alcohol expectancy. (2) Korean traditional culture that partakes of sacrificial food and drink have an influence on the first drinking of most elementary schoolchildren. And it was proved that schoolchildren with this drinking experience rather than any other motives had less negative alcohol expectancy. (3) It was proved that schoolchildren adapting themselves rather than being difficult in school life had more negative alcohol expectancy. And the more knowledge about alcohol or drinking schoolchildren had, the more they had negative alcohol expectancy (4) It was proved that schoolchildren having drinking experience or drinking at present rather than having no drinking experience or not-drinking at present had less negative alcohol expectancy. (5) It was proved that schoolchildren having strong drinking intention rather than having weak or no drinking intention in the future had more positive alcohol expectancy. Based on previous results, guideline for development of pre-alcohol prevention programs can be represented: discriminated programs development on educatee, drinking education programs development increasing the power of self-control about alcohol and drinking, social education or continuing education programs development on drinking, open preschool education to substantially prevent drinking or alcoholism etc. The findings, however, should be interpreted with caution, because this study has several limitations in measurement and sampling as follows. First, selection bias because of limited selection of sampling. It is because the subjects are drawn from only 8 elementary schools in Daegu. Second, less refined measurement ; Therefore, it is necessary to develop more detailed measures on alcohol knowledge, alcohol expectancy level especially. Further researches should be suggested and encouraged with more refined methodologies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of alcohol outcome expectancy and depression on the relation between parents' problematic drinking and their collegiate children's problematic drinking. Methods: This study was conducted using a descriptive survey design. Subjects were 342 university students from three universities in Gwangju city and Jeollanamdo. Data were collected from November to December 2013 using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0. Results: Of the participants, 31.0% were in the adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) group. The ACOA group scored significantly higher on problem drinking, alcohol outcome expectancy, and depression measures than did the non-ACOA group. There were significant positive correlations between parent problematic drinking and university students' alcohol outcome expectancy, depression and, problematic drinking. It was also found that alcohol outcome expectancy partially mediated the relationship between parent problematic drinking and their children's problematic drinking. This was not found for depression. Conclusions: Based on the present findings, nursing interventions should be developed to decrease alcohol outcome expectancy, with additional consideration regarding depression, in order to prevent problematic drinking among ACOA.
The purpose of this study was to identify relationships among peer pressure, parental supervision, alcohol expectancy and adolescent drinking behaviors between year 2001 and 2006. Three hundred high school students were given questionnaires each year on their drinking behavior. Findings of this study were; first, a adolescent drinking and the amount drinking has increased during the years. adolescent drinker ratio as adolescent drinkers were 91.3% in 2006 compared to 75.9% in 2001. The average drinking amounts were 40.82 units in 2006 and 24.9 units in 2001. Second, differences were found in adolescent drinking behaviors such as the amount of alcohol consumption, drinking frequency, & problem drinker ratio by gender, and grade. Male students over female students. Third, peer pressure, parental supervision, alcohol expectancy showed significant impacts on adolescent drinking behaviors through 2001 and 2006. Students who lack parental supervision with much higher drinking-related peer pressure along with a higher level of positive alcohol expectancy were observed to be heavy drinkers and problem drinkers. Especially, students who showed belief in alcohol's tension-relieving function and sociability function tended to over-drink, drink more frequently and as a result, experienced more drinking problems. Intervention strategies were discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among distress from drinking, alcohol abstinence self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in youths. Method: The participants in this study were 174 university students who were enrolled by convenience sampling. The data were collected from March to August, 2005. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS 12.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in the physical distress from drinking according to gender, age, residence, drinking frequency and drinking capacity. There were significant differences in alcohol abstinence self-efficacy by drinking frequency and drinking capacity. There were significant differences in drinking outcome expectancy according to gender, drinking frequency and drinking capacity. The physical distress from drinking showed a significant positive correlation with alcohol abstinence self-efficacy (r=.312, p=.000) and negative correlation with drinking outcome expectancy (r=-.353, p=.000). Alcohol abstinence self-efficacy showed a significant negative correlation with drinking outcome expectancy (r=-.387, p=.000). Conclusion: There were relationships among physical distress from drinking, alcohol abstinence self-efficacy, and drinking outcome expectancy. These findings provide the basis to prevent problems of drinking by developing alcohol control program for university students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of alcohol outcome expectancy, depression and suicidal ideation on problematic drinking among college students. Methods: This study was conducted using a descriptive survey design. Participants were 205 college students from two universities in Jeollanamdo. Data were collected from March 10 to March 25 in 2014 using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression using SPSS 19.0. Results: Of the participants, 57.6% were in problem drinking group. There were significant positive correlations between alcohol outcome expectancy, depression and problematic drinking of college students. However, suicidal ideation was not correlated with problematic drinking. It was also found that alcohol outcome expectancy, low academic performance and depression influence on problem drinking of college students. These variables did not influence on suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based on the findings, problem drinking prevention programs should be developed to decrease alcohol outcome expectancy and regulate negative emotions such as depression, in order to prevent problematic drinking among college students.
The purpose of this study was designed to develope and test the structural model that explains alcohol consumption behaviors among university students in Republic of Korea. The hypothetical model was constructed on the basis of the literature review and Pender's Health promotion model. Data was collected from questionnaires from 512 university students in Republic of Korea, from August to September, 2000. The reliability of instruments was adequate (Cronbach's alpha= .69-.90). Data analysis was done with SAS 6.12 for descriptive statistics and LISREL 8.13 program for covariance structural analysis. The results are as follows; 1. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate. Thus it was modified by male and female models. 2. The revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the empirical data (male: χ2=87.21 p=.00, GFI=.97, AGFI= .94, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=619.17, female: χ2=49.29 p=.31, GFI=.45, AGFI= .95, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=370.02). 3. Self-efficacy was most significant factor and personality of novelty seeking, reward compensation, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on male alcohol consumption behavior. 4. Personality of novelty seeking was most significant factor and personality of harm avoidance, friend influence, self-efficacies, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on female alcohol consumption behavior.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the patterns and significant predictors influencing hospitalization of Korean men for alcohol use disorder. Methods: A descriptive study design was utilized. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from 143 inpatients who met the DSM-5 alcohol use disorder criteria and were receiving treatment and 157 social drinkers living in the community. The questionnaires included Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Alcohol Problems, Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire (AEQ), Life Position, and The Korean version of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST-K). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test, F-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and logistic regression with forward stepwise. Results: AUDIT had significant correlations with alcohol problems, alcohol expectancy, and parents' alcoholism. In logistic regression, factors significantly affecting hospitalization were divorced (OR=4.18, 95% CI: 1.28-13.71), graduation from elementary school (OR=28.50, 95% CI: 8.07-100.69), middle school (OR=6.66, 95% CI: 2.21-20.09), high school (OR=6.31, 95% CI: 2.59-15.36), drinking alone (OR=9.07, 95% CI: 1.78-46.17), family history of alcoholism (OR=2.41, 95% CI: 1.11-5.25), interpersonal relationship problems (OR=1.28, 95% CI:1.17-1.41), and sexual enhancement of alcohol expectancy (OR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.72-0.94), which accounted for 53% of the variance. Conclusion: Results suggest that interpersonal relationship programs and customized cognitive programs for social drinkers in the community are needed to decreased alcohol related hospitalization in Korean men.
Purpose: The purpose was to investigate the factors influencing the alcohol consumption behavior of adolescents to provide basic data for a nursing intervention program to improve health management and prohibit alcohol consumption. Method: The subjects were 306 university students, living in K city in Chungnam province from April 1 to 20th, 2002. The instruments used were the alcohol consumption behavior scale, that is the drinking intensity score, and developed by Shin(1998)'s scale of drinking problem, refusal self-efficacy scale by Aas et. al.(1995), alcohol expectancy by Goldman et. al. (1989), TPQ scale by Cloninger(1991), depression scale by Zung(1974), family cohesion scale by Olson et. al. (1983). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression by using SPSS & SAS program. Results: The multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of alcohol consumption behavior was the influence of friends (drinking everyday) (17.0%). A combination of alcohol expectancy (8.0%), influence of friends (4.0%), father's influence (2.0%), depression(2.0%), refusal self-efficacy (1.0%), personality of harm avoidance(1.0%), and monthly pocket money (2.0%) accounted for 38.6% of the variance in alcohol consumption behavior. Conclusion: From the results, we recommend to use the database that develops nursing intervention program for decreasing the alcohol consumption behavior including the influencing factors in university students.

Objectives: This study was designed to construct and test the structural equation model for the alcohol-related problem of alcohol use disorders. Methods: Data were collected by structured self-questionnaires from 229 male subjects who received > 8 (greater than 8) score on Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). The Data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. Results: The model fit indices for the modified hypothetical model showed Q = 2.50, GFI = 0.90, and CFI = 0.94. As a result, Life position, parent's drinking problem, and alcohol expectancy had significantly direct effect on alcohol-related problem. Alcohol expectancy also had mediator effect between life position and alcohol-related problem. Conclusions: Consequently, the more positive life position, the less alcohol-related problem occurred. It is necessary to change their life position, which is individual factor, to prevent or reduce the alcohol related problem of alcohol use disorders.
