A study of the pack cemcented SiC coating on graphite was performed and the process conditions were evaluated by means of experimental design. The content of Si, P2O5, B and Al2O3 reaction temperature, reaction time and acid treatment wast tested as the experimental variables. The results were analyzed and compared by the characteristic value of 10% weight loss by oxidation. The acid treatment exhibited the most effective anti-oxidation property and the optimum conditions were the powder composition of 20% Si, 3% B and 77% SiC, the reaction temperature of 1550$^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours with phosphoric acid treatment. The pack coating performed under this condition improved the 10% weight loss oxidation temperature by 514$^{\circ}C$ compared to the bare graphite.
β'-sialon(Z=2.7) specimens with <30%wt. graphite as a reducing agent were decomposed at 1350°up to 1,450℃ under the atmosphere of 90% N2-10%H2. The decomposition of β'-sialon was calculated from the change in Z-value, and the formation of new minerals was identified from X-ray diffraction patterns. The decomposition reactions of sialon were considered to yield a stable sialon close to β-silicon nitride and some aluminum compounds according to the following equations; β'-sialon(s)+C(s)+N2(g)→β2-sialon(metastable)+β3-sialon(stalbe phase) β2-sialon(s)+C(s)+N2(g)→β3-sialon(s)+AlN(s)+α-Al2O3(s)+15R(s)+SiO(g)+Al2O(g)+CO(g) Z-value; β2( 3.5)>β'( 2.7)>β3( 0.5) The decomposition rate of sialon was controlled by two mechanisms ; One was characterized by the interface area of contact, corresponding to an apparent activation energy of 50.5Kcal/mol in the initial stage, and the other by the diffusion, corresponding to that of 104.3Kcal/mol in the final stage of the decomposition.

A possibility of production of aluminium matrix composites by using the lost foam process was investigated. Silicon carbide particles, graphite particles, and stainless steel wires were used as reinforcement materials. The reinforcement materials were introduced to the polystyrene to form patterns via injection molding process. The results obtained from this experiment can be summarized as follows. In Al/SiCp system, the particles with the radius of $100{\mu}m$ and over were entrapped in the matrix in the case of upward freezing of which solidification direction was opposite to floating direction of the particles. And few particles were entrapped in the matrix in downward freezing. In Al/graphite system, almost no particles were entrapped in the matrix except the area chill attatched. When the thickness of polystyrene slice was 4mm in Al/stainless steel wire system, the floating tendency of fibers was observed to increase as the distance from the ingate was increased.
For the purpose of development of domestic carburizer, when the basicity of ash in carburizer was changed from $Na_2O/Al_2O_3+SiO_2$ ; 0.06 to $Na_2O/Al_2O_3+SiO_2$ ; 0,196wt%, using $Na_2O$ as flux for domestic graphite resource (Bong Myung armorphous graphite), carburizing efficiency was improved as basicity increased, optimum basicity value was $Na_2O/Al_2O_3+SiO_2$ ; 0.151. This means that $Na_2O$ contributed to lower viscosity of slag and raise occurence probability of specific reaction surface between molten iron and carburizer. The experiment of effect of general characteristics offecting carburizing ability of this carburizer was performed, the result is that 10/30 mesh was optimum size of the carburizer and as carbon equivalent of molten iron was higher, carburizing ratio was lowered, but when si concentration was below 1.8% in general cast iron melting region, recovery showed 75-85%. As agitation rate of molten iron and temperature interval were higher, Carburizing ratio was increased and showed max, 94%. Desulfurizing phenomena of molten iron by $Na_2O$ in carburizer didn't appear.

The over-discharging phenomena in sodium-nickel chloride batteries were investigated in relation to decomposition of molten salt electrolyte and consequent metal co-deposition. From XRD analysis, the material deposited on graphite cathode current collector was revealed to be by-product of molten salt electrolyte decomposition. In particular, the result showed that the Ni-Al alloys ($Al_3Ni_2$, $Ni_3Al$ and $Al_3Ni$) were electrochemically deposited on graphite current collectors in line with over-discharging behaviors. It is assumed that the $NiCl_2$ solubility in molten salt electrolytes leads to the co-deposition of Ni-Al alloys by increasing metal deposition potential above 1.6 V (vs. $Na/Na^+$). The cell tests have revealed that the composition of molten salt electrolytes modified by various additives makes a decisive influence on the over-discharging behaviors of the cells. It was revealed that NaOCN addition to molten salt electrolytes was advantageous to suppress over-discharge reactions by modifying the characteristics of molten salt electrolytes. NaOCN addition into molten salt electrolytes seems to suppress Ni solubility by maintaining basic melts. The cell using modified molten salt electrolyte with NaOCN (Cell D) showed relatively less cell degradation compared with other cells for long cycles.

In this work, we present the electrochemical properties of Al bipolar plate, which can be re-searched for the application of PEMFC system. Bulk resistance of the plate was measured with a four-point probe method. The electrical conductivity of noble metal coated Al plate was 4.40 x 10$^4$ S/cm. On the other hand, the electrical interfacial resistance of the noble metal coated Al plate valued at 0.15 mΩ-$\textrm{cm}^2$ and that of graphite was 0.26 mΩ-$\textrm{cm}^2$ under the holding pressure of 140 N/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the applied current of 5 A. And the performance of Al bipolar plate for PEMFC was evaluated at various conditions. The single cell performance was more than 0.43 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ (0.47 Wig) for noble metal coated Al bipolar plate at 5$0^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure in external humidified hydrogen and oxygen condition. As the present results, we could show the results that the noble metal coated Al bipolar plates were favorable in the aspect of electrical properties compared with those of the commercialized resin-impregnated graphite plates.

This paper presents the Raman scattering characteristics of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films deposited on AlN buffer layer by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) using hexamethyldisilane (MHDS) and carrier gases (Ar + $H_2$).The Raman spectra of SiC films deposited on AlN layer of before and after annealings were investigated according to the growth temperature of 3C-SiC. Two strong Raman peaks, which mean that poly 3C-SiC admixed with nanoparticle graphite, were measured in them. The biaxial stress of poly 3C-SiC/AlN was calculated as 896 MPa from the Raman shifts of 3C-SiC deposited at $1180^{\circ}C$ on AlN of after annealing.
This study investigates the effects of porosity on the thermal stability and the thermal shock resistance of a porous nozzle used for blowing an inert gas. The samples of $Al_2O_3-SiO_2-ZrO_2$ system, which had the apparent porosity of 16~30% and bulk density of $2.6{\sim}3.2g/cm^3$, were prepared by adding different graphite contents (5, 10, 20 wt%) as a pore-forming agent. The thermal shock test was conducted at ${\Delta}T=500$, 1000, and $1400^{\circ}C$ also and the thermal stability was also carried out at 1550, 1600, and $1650^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. The specimen contained 10 wt% graphite had uniform pore size distribution, whereas the specimen with 20 wt% graphite showed non-uniform pore size distribution. As a result of thermal shock test, the specimen containing 10 wt% graphite appears to have higher mechanical strength than the other specimens (5, 20 wt% graphite). Both the 5 wt% and 20 wt% graphite specimens developed a non-uniform pore size distribution and cracks that were generated by intensive thermal stress.
Recently there were many studies on the development of cast iron for increasing strength, thermal resistance and mechanical properties, etc. The effects on mechanical properties and variation of solidification structure of hypo-eutectic cast iron was investigated when Ni(Al) was added with a fixed quantity of Al(Ni) content. The conclusions are as follows. 1) Tensile strength was the maximum(over 41 kg/ $mm^2$) when Al is added about 0.72%. 2) Torsional strength and angle were increased with increasing Al content and represents maximum value, when Al and Ni content are 1.5 and 2.0%. 3) With increasing Ni content, tensile strength decreased because of the effect of graphite coarsening. But torsional strengths were increased with the appropriate addition of (Ni%+Al%) content because of the effect of strengthened matrix.
