Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Cr-Al-Si-N Coatings for Wear Resistant and Structural Applications (내마모 구조 코팅용 Cr-Al-Si-N 코팅막의 미세구조와 기계적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Cr-Al-Si-N coatings were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating and DC magnet :on sputtering technique in $N_2/Ar$ mixture. The Cr-tll-Si-N coatings were synthesized with different Si contents. Their microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The average size of crystallites largely decreases with the increase of Si content compared with Cr-Al-N. The microhardness of Cr-Al-Si-N coatings largely increases from 24 to 55 GPa. The enhanced hardness is believed to originate from the microstructural change by the fine composite microstructure of Cr-Al-N coatings with Si addition. The average friction coefficient of Cr-Al-Si-N coatings decreases from 0.84 to 0.45 with increasing Si content up to $16\;at.\%$.

Effect of Various Interlayer Deposition on Room Temperature and High Temperature Properties of CrAlN Coatings (다양한 중간층 증착이 CrAlN 코팅의 상온 및 고온 특성에 미치는 효과에 관한 연구)

  • CrAlN 코팅은 높은 경도, 낮은 표면 조도 등의 상온에서의 우수한 기계적 특성 이외에 고온에서 안정한 합금상의 형성으로 인하여 우수한 내산화성 및 내열성을 보유하여 공구 코팅으로의 적용 가능성이 크다. 그러나 최근 공구사용 환경의 가혹화로 인하여 코팅의 내마모성 및 내열성 등의 물성 향상을 통한 공구의 수명 향상이 필요시 되고 있으며, 다양한 코팅 물질을 활용하여 다층 코팅을 합성함으로써 난삭재용 공구 코팅의 물성을 높이는 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 CrAlN 코팅과 WC-Co 6wt.% 모재 사이에 CrZrN, CrN, CrN/CrZrSiN 등의 중간층을 합성하여 CrAlN 코팅의 상온 및 고온 특성을 향상시키는 연구가 진행되었다. 합성된 코팅의 구조 및 물성을 분석하기 위해 field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), nano-indentation, atomic force microscopy(AFM) 및 ball-on-disk wear tester를 사용하였다. 코팅의 고온 특성을 확인하기 위해 코팅을 furnace에 넣어 공기중에서 30분 동안 annealing 한 후에 nano-indentation을 사용하여 경도를 측정하였고, $500^{\circ}C$ annealing 코팅의 표면 조도 분석 및 $500^{\circ}C$에서 마찰마모시험을 실시하였다. CrAlN 코팅의 상온 특성을 분석한 결과, 모든 코팅의 경도(35.5-36.2 GPa)와 탄성계수(424.3-429.2 GPa)는 중간층의 종류에 상관없이 비슷한 값을 보인 것으로 확인됐다. 그러나, CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅의 마찰계수는 0.33로 CrZrN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅의 마찰계수(0.41)에 비해 향상된 값 보였으며, 코팅의 마모율 및 마모폭도 비슷한 경향을 보인 것으로 보아 코팅의 내마모성이 향상된 것으로 판단된다. 이것은 중간층의 H/E ratio가 코팅의 내마모성에 미치는 영향에 의한 결과로 사료된다. H/E ratio는 파단시의 최대 탄성 변형율로써, 모재/중간층/코팅의 H/E ratio 구배에 따라 코팅 내의 응력의 완화 정도가 변하게 된다. WC 모재 (H/E=0.040)와 CrAlN 코팅(H/E=0.089) 사이에서 CrN, CrZrSiN 중간층의 H/E ratio는 각각 0.076, 0.083 으로 모재/중간층/코팅의 H/E ratio 구배가 점차 증가함을 확인 할 수 있었고, 일정 응력이 지속적으로 가해지면서 진행되는 마모시험중에 CrN과 CrZrSiN 중간층이 WC와 CrAlN 코팅 사이에서 코팅 내부의 응력구배를 완화시키는 역할을 함으로써 CrAlN 코팅의 내마모성이 향상된 것으로 판단된다. 내열성 시험 결과, CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 증착한 코팅은 $1,000^{\circ}C$까지 약 28GPa의 높은 경도를 유지한 것으로 확인 되었다. $500^{\circ}C$ annealing 후 진행된 표면 조도와 마모시험 결과, 모든 코팅의 조도 값 및 마찰계수는 상온 값에 비해 증가하였으며 CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅의 변화량이 가장 낮은 값을 보였다. 이는 CrZrSiN 중간층 내에 존재하는 $SiN_x$ 비정질상이 고온 annealing시에 산소 차폐막 역할을 하여, 코팅내의 잔류 산소에 의한 산화작용을 효과적으로 방지함으로써 코팅의 고온 특성이 향상된 것으로 판단된다.

Rapidly Solidified Microstructure and Phase Decomposition of Al-Cr alloys by the Single Roller Method (Single Roller법에 의한 Al-Cr 계 합금의 급냉응고 조직과 상분해)

  • Al-Cr alloy with composition in the range from 1.5 wt% to 10 wt% Cr were rapidly solidified from the melt by the single roller method. The supersaturated solid solution was obtained up to 6 wt% Cr in Al-Cr alloy for $20{\mu}m$ thickness. Lattice parameter decreased with increasing Cr content at the rate of 0.00456A per wt% Cr up to 6 wt% Cr. Microhardness increased with increasing Cr content at the rate of $10\;Kg/mm^2$ per wt% Cr up to 6 wt% Cr. Microhardness measurements on the Al-6 wt% Cr supersaturated solid solution annealed isothermally showed no sign of age hardening. Decomposition temperature, determined by lattice parameter changes and microhardness changes, was $470^{\circ}C$ for Al-6 wt% Cr supersaturated solid solution. Transmission electron microscopy showed that decomposition within one hour below $400^{\circ}C$ occurred at grain boundaries only, and also the additional decomposition within grains being evident at $450^{\circ}C$ The coarse precipitate structure showed at $500^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$, respectively. The coarse precipitate structure is considered $Al_7Cr$.

Wear Mechanism of CrN Coating on Aluminum Alloys Deposited by AIP Method

  • Dry sliding wear and friction test of CrN coaling on two types of aluminum alloy substrates,6061 Al and 7075 Al deposited by arc ion plating, was peformed with a ball-on-disk tribometer. The effects of normal Bead and the mechanical properties of substrate on the friction coefficient and wear-resistance of CrN coating were investigated. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM. The results show that surface micro-hardness of CrN- coated 7075 Al is higher than that of CrN-coated 6061 Al. With an increase in normal lead, wear volume increases, while the friction coefficient decreases. The friction coefficient of CrN-coated 6061 Al is higher than that of CrN-coated 7075 Al, while the wear-resistance of CrN-coated 6061 Al is lower than the CrN-coated 7075 Al's, which indicates that the substrate mechanical properties have strong inf1uences on the friction coefficient and wear of CrN coating. The main wear mechanism was fragments of CrN coating, which were caused by apparent plastic deformation of substrate during wear test.

  • In the system of Li2O-MgO-Al2O3-Cr2O3, the crystalline solid solution of LiCrO2 along the pseudo-binary join between rocksalt structure(LiCrO2) and spinel structure(MgCr2O4 or MgAl2O4) have been investigated by x-ray diffraction techniques. In this study, order-disorder phase transition of LiCrO2 was observed and the unit cell of the disordered LiCrO2 structure has been established. It has been found that LiCrO2 makes a solid solution over a wide range with MgAl2O4, while not with MgCr2O4. This difference was explained as being due to the ability of oxygen lattice distortion which depended on the relative sizes and chemical bonding characteristics of the substituted ions.

Effects of Alloying Elements on the Pitting Behavior of Ti-Al Intermetallic Compounds (TiAl 금속간화헙물의 공식거동에 미치는 합금원소의 영향)

  • Effects of alloying elements on the pitting behavior of Ti-Al intermetalic compounds in the electrolytic soution containing Cl- were investigated through electrochemical tets and corrosion morphologies. Corrosion potential increased in the case of Cr addition to Ti-48%Al, whereas it decreased in the case of Si and B addition. The simultaneous addition of Cr and Si increased passive current density and decrosion corrosion potential. The passive current density of N addtion was higher than that of B addition in H2SO4 solution. With the addition of alloying elements, The pitting resistance decreased in order of TiAl>TiAlSi>TiAlN>TiAlB>TiAlCr and whin siumultaneous addition, it decreased in order of TiAlCrSi>TiAlCrBN>TiAlCrrN. The surface merohology after pitting test showed that the TiAl coataining Si had for fewer pits than that containing Cr and N simultaneously.

  • 아크이온플래이팅 기술과 스퍼터링 기술이 결합된 하이브리드 코팅 시스템을 이용하여 STS 304와 Si 기판에 4성분계 Cr-Al-Mo-N 코팅을 증착하였다. $N_2$/Ar 혼합가스 분위기하에 아크 타겟은 Cr을 사용하였고 스퍼터링 타겟은 Al과 Mo를 사용하였으며 합성된 Cr-Al-Mo-N 코팅은 주로 치환고용된 (Cr, Al, Mo)N으로 구성되었다. 최고 경도값은 Mo 함량이 24.2 at.%일 때 35 GPa을 나타냈으며 마찰계수는 Mo의 함량이 0에서 33.2 at.%로 증가함에 따라 0.9에서 0.48로 감소하였다. 이는 $MoO_3$가 코팅면과 스틸볼 계면에서 고체 윤활제로 작용한 것으로 사료된다. 그러나 Cr-Al-Mo-N 코팅은 MoN의 낮은 내산화온도로 인하여 Cr-Al-N에 비하여 더 낮은 온도에서 산화되었다.

Oxidation of Cr2AlC Carbides at 700-1000℃ in Air (Cr2AlC 탄화물의 700-1000℃에서의 대기중 산화)

  • The $Cr_2AlC$ carbides oxidized at 700, 850 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air from 70 hours up to 360 days. They oxidized according to the reaction; $Cr_2AlC+O_2{\rightarrow}{\alpha}-Al_2O_3+CO(g)$. The scales consisted primarily of the thin, essentially pure $Al_2O_3$ layer and the underlying Al-dissolved $Cr_7C_3$ layer. They grew via the outward diffusion of Al and carbon, and the inward diffusion of oxygen. The oxidation resistance of $Cr_2AlC$ was excellent due to the formation of the protective $Al_2O_3$ layer. Even when $Cr_2AlC$ oxidized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 360 days, the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer was only about 4 ${\mu}m$-thick.

Microstructural characterization of accident tolerant fuel cladding with Cr-Al alloy coating layer after oxidation at 1200 ℃ in a steam environment

  • Zr alloy specimens were coated with Cr-Al alloy to enhance their resistance to oxidation. The coated samples were oxidized at 1200 ℃ in a steam environment for 300 s and showed extremely low oxidation when compared to uncoated Zr alloy specimens. The microstructure and elemental distribution of the oxides formed on the surface of Cr-Al alloys have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A very thin protective layer of Cr2O3 formed on the outer surface of the Cr-Al alloy, and a thin Al2O3 layer was also observed in the Cr-Al alloy matrix, near the surface. Our results suggest that these two oxide layers near the surface confers excellent oxidation resistance to the Cr-Al alloy. Even after exposure to a high temperature of 1200 ℃, inter-diffusion between the Cr-Al alloy and the Zr alloy occurred in very few regions near the interface. Analysis of the inter-diffusion layer by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurement confirmed its identity as Cr2Zr.
