  • The effect of Al addition on the precipitation behavior of a binary Mg-Zn alloy was investigated based on the changes in the morphology, distribution and element concentration of precipitates formed during aging treatment. The as-cast Mg-6.0 mass%Zn (Mg-6Zn) and Mg-6.0 mass%Zn-3.0 mass%Al (Al-added) were homogenized at 613 K for 48 h and at 673 K for 12 h; they were then solid solution treated at 673 K for 0.5 h and 1 h, respectively. The Mg-6Zn and Al-added alloys were aged at 403 K and 433 K. The peak hardness of the Al-added alloy was higher than that of the Mg-6Zn alloy at each aging temperature. Rod-like, plate-like, blocky, and lath-like precipitates were observed in the Al-added alloy aged at 433 K for 230.4 ks, although the rod-like and plate-like precipitates were observed in the TEM microstructure of the Mg-6Zn alloy aged at 433 K for 360 ks. Moreover, the precipitates in the Al-added alloy were refined and densely distributed compared with those in the Mg-6Zn alloy. The Cliff-Lorimer plots obtained by the EDS analysis of the rod-like ${\beta}_1^'$ and plate-like ${\beta}_2^'$ phases in the Al-added alloy peak aged at 433 K for 230.4 ks were examined. It was confirmed that the ${\beta}_2^'$ phases had higher concentration of solute Al atom than was present in the ${\beta}_1^'$ phases, indicating that the properties of precipitates can be changed by Al addition.

  • $Al_2O_3$ is a promising gate dielectric because of its high dielectric constant, high resistivity and low leakage current. Since $OH^-$ radical in $Al_2O_3$ films deposited by ALD using TMA and $H_2O$ degrades the good properties of $Al_2O_3$, TMA and $O_3$ were used to deposite $Al_2O_3$ films and the effects of $O_3$ on the properties of the $Al_2O_3$ films were investigated. The growth rate of the $Al_2O_3$ film under the optimum condition was 0.85 $\AA$/cycle. According to the XPS analysis results the $OH^-$ concentration in the $Al_2O_3$ film deposited using $O_3$ is lower than that using $H_2O$. RBS analysis results indicate the chemical formula of the film is $Al_{2.2}O_{2.8}$. The carbon concentration in the film detected by AES is under 1 at%. SEM observation confirms that the step coverage of the $Al_2O_3$ film deposited by ALD using $O_3$ is nearly 100%.

  • This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing a prefonned polymeric solution of Al(III) for coagulation in water treatment. Slow base(NaOH) injection into supersaturated aluminum chloride and aluminum sulfate solutions did produce high yields of Al polymers useful to water treatment applications. The method of characterization analysis was based on timed spectrophotometer with ferron as a color developing reagent. The hydrolytic Al species were divided into $monomeric(Al_a),\;polymeric(Al_b),\;and\;precipitate(Al_c)$ from the difference in reaction kinetics. The analysis of PACl's characteristics showed that the quantity of polymeric Al produced at value of$ r(OH_{added}/AI)=2.2$ was $83\%$ of the total aluminum in solution, as showing maximum contents and precipitated Al was dramatically increased when r was increased above 2.35. In addition, the characteristics of polyaluminum sulfate (PAS) showed that polymeric Al contained at r = 0.75 was $18\%$ of the total aluminum in solution. The synthesized PACI and PAS were stable during storing period, as indicating negligible aging effect. The effect of sulfate ion on PACI was dependent on the concentration of sulfate ion. That is, polymeric species decrease and precipitate species increase as sulfate ion concentration increased. It can be concluded that the sulfate cause the formation of $Al(OH)_{3(S)}$ at low pH. However, The effect of calcium ion was negligible for distribution of Al species.

  • This study explores reducing the oxygen content of a commercial Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powder to less than 400 ppm by deoxidation in the solid state (DOSS) using Ca vapor, and investigates the effect of Ca vapor on the surface chemical state. As the deoxidation temperature increases, the oxygen concentration of the Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powder decreases, achieving a low value of 745 ppm at 1100℃. When the deoxidation time is increased to 2 h, the oxygen concentration decreases to 320ppm at 1100℃, and the oxygen reduction rate is approximately 78% compared to that of the raw material. The deoxidized Ti-48Al-2Cr-2nb powder maintains a spherical shape, but the surface shape changes slightly owing to the reaction of Ca and Al. The oxidation state of Ti and Al on the surface of the Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powder corresponds to a mixture of TiO2 and Al2O3. As a result, the peaks of metallic Ti and Ti suboxide intensify as TiO2 and Al2O3 in the surface oxide layer are reduced by Ca vapor deposition.

  • Theoretical predictions were made for thermodynamically stable phases which formed when alkali(sodium and Potassium) vapors reacted with the 90% $Al_2O_3$-10% $Cr_2O_3$ refractory under coal gasifying atmosphere using the computer program of SOLGASMIX-PV. The calculation results showed that the stable compounds that formed were $X_2O$.$Al_2O_3$ and $X_2O$.$llAl_2O_3$(X=$Na^+$ or $K^+$), depending upon the alkali concentration. The presence of sulfur in gasifying atmospheres did not appear to affect the species of alkali reaction products. Alkali attack at high temperatures is likely to cause serious degradation at the hot face of the refractory, indicating that the alkali concentration is an important factor to affect the degradation of the refroctory.

  • The electron density and electronic states in n- AlGaAs/GaAs heterointerface are calculated by using classical- and quantum-mechanics, respectively. We examine the effects of spacer layer thickness and doping concentration in AlGaAs layer on 2DEG density. Also, the dependences of electronic states of 2DEG upon temperature and acceptor concentration in GaAs layer are investigated.

  • Most investigators have come to stress two different concepts of mechanism controlling renin release; intrarenal baroreceptor theory and the macula densa theory(Vander 1967, Thurau and Masson 1974). In the macula densa theory, the specific macula densa parameter, most commonly suggested as a possible signal, is either the osmolality or the concentration of sodium in the tubular fluid (Thurau 1964, Vander and Miller 1964, Reeves and Sommers 1965). It has been shown that sodium plays an important role in the release of renin either in vivo (Thurau 1964, Vander and Miller 1964, Thurau et al 1972) or in vitro experiments(Oelkers et al 1970, Hammerson et al 1971, Michelakis 1971). On the other hand the osmolality appears to have no effect on the release of renin in vivo (Vander 1967, Thurau and Masson 1974). However, there has been little attempt to study the effect of osmolality on in vitro renin release. We therefore undertook the present investigation to elucidate the effect of osmolality on renin release and to further test the sodium influence upon the release of renin from isolated kidney slice preparations. Isolated renal cortical slices were washed with normal Krebs-Hensenleit bicarbonate buffer solution and incubated for 30 minutes in a medium containing an appropriate concentration of sodium and osmolality. The renin released into the medium was measured by the method of radioimmunoassay(Haber et al 1969). The results obtained are as follows; 1. The release of renin from renal cortical slices was progressively inhibited as the sodium concentration in the medium increased. 2. No significant alteration in renin release was observed when osmolality of the medium was changed. These results suggest that the release of renin from the renal cortical slices is directly affected by the changes in sodium concentration in the medium, but is not influenced by the alterations in osmolality.

  • The recycled washwater, which has different water quality and is produced about 5 to 20% of the total water volume treated, affects the unit operation of water treatment, especially coagulation process. However, the effects of recycled washwater on unit operation of water treatment have not been fully investigated. In this study, effects of recycled washwater on coagulation process were investigated to find the optimum coagulation condition by analyzing turbidity, $UV_{254}$, TOC removal efficiencies. In addition, effects of recycled washwater on residual Al after coagulation were studied by analyzing soluble and particulate Al. The size distribution and fractal dimension of coagulated also analyzed. The recycled washwater was lower pH than the raw water. And the recycled washwater had higher $UV_{254}$, TOC and residual Al concentration than the raw water. Residual Al concentration of recycled washwater was about 50 times higher than that of raw water. Optimum coagulant dosages on the blending recycled washwater and the raw water for turbidity, $UV_{254}$ and Al removal were lower than that on the raw water. However, TOC removal increased by increasing coagulant dosage. The size and fractal dimension of coagulated particle produced in the blending recycled washwater were larger, which imply faster settling velocity, than those produced in the raw water only.

  • Theoretical predictions for thermodynamically stable phases which formed when alkali(sodium and potassium) vapors reacted with alumina-chromia refractories under coal gasifying atmosphere were confirmed experimentally using a laboratory-scale coal gasifying reaction system and a commercial alumina-chromia refractory using SEM, XRD, and EDAX. Alkali concentration profiles in the refractory as a function of time were also determined. The results showed that the compounds that formed were $X_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}Cr_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}5Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}7Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}11Al_2O_3(X=Na^+ \;or\; K^+)$, depending upon the alkali concentration and time of exposure at high temperatures. The presence of sulfur in gasifying atmospheres did not appear to affect the alkali reaction produces. Alkali pentration into the alumina-chromia refractory was deep and the formation of the $Na_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3/K_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3$ compunds resulted in the serious deformation of the refractory due to the large volume expansion at the reaction surface. The hot face of the alumina-chromia refractory in service under an alkali environment is prone to failure by alkali attack.
