A Study on the Invariant Recognition of Aircraft (항공기 불변 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The design of an automatic aircraft recognition system involves two parts. The first part is extraction of invariant features independent of scale, rotation and translation. The second part is determination of optimal decision procedures, which are needed in the classification process. In this research, we extracted invariant aircraft features regardless of size, rotation and translation using Fourier Descriptors and Zernike Moments and classified using neural networks.

  • An aircraft must be designed to minimize system failure rate for obtaining the aircraft safety, because the aircraft system failure causes a fatal accident. The safety of the aircraft system can be predicted by analyzing availability, reliability, and maintainability of the system. In this study, the reliability and the maintainability of the hydraulic system are analysed except the availability, and therefore the reliability and the maintainability analysis process and the results are presented for a helicopter hydraulic system. For prediction of the system reliability, the failure rate model presented in MIL-HDBK-217F is used, and MTBF is calculated by using the Part Stress Analysis Prediction and quality/temperature/environmental factors described in NPRD-95 and MIL-HDBK-338B. The maintainability is predicted by FMECA(Failure Mode, Effect & Criticality Analysis) based on MIL-STD-1629A.

  • For establishing new certification requirements for aircraft engines, Technical background of FAR Part33 amendments has reviewed and studied in this paper. The FAA is amending type certification standards for aircraft engines. These changes reflect current industry practices and harmonize FAA standards with those recently adopted by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These changes establish uniform standards for all engine control systems for aircraft engines certificated by both U.S. and European countries and will simplify airworthiness approvals for import and export.

  • The paper presents the results investigating the effect of aircraft engine impact location on the intended function evaluation results of spent nuclear fuel transport cask. As a result of the investigation, it is found that the structural integrity is maintained as the maximum accumulated equivalent plastic strain is below the acceptable criterion regardless of the collision location. It is identified that when the aircraft engine collided with the upper part of the transport cask without considering impact limiter the containment performance is weakened compared to when the aircraft engine collided with the central part.

  • This study investigates aircraft lessor business models by studying cases and interviewing experts to analyze investors and business strategies of aircraft lessor. The results confirm that there is a wide range of investors including institutional investors, financial institutions, insurance companies, corporations, and wealthy individuals for aircraft lessor. Aircraft lessors can be categorized based on its required rate of return (cost of capital) into bank-investing core, institutional investor-investing value-added, and hedge fund-investing opportunistic. Aircraft lessor decides leasing rate by aircraft purchasing price and lessee's credit rating. Core aircraft lessors invest in new aircrafts for new placement or sale-and-leaseback strategy requiring little technical risk in aircraft, value-added lessors invest in middle-aged aircrafts for re-leasing, opportunistic lessors invest in old aircrafts for freighter conversion or part-out strategy requiring high level of expertise. This study provides insights for future Korean aircraft lessor establishment and investment.

Bias Correction for Aircraft Temperature Observation Part I: Analysis of Temperature Bias Characteristics by Comparison with Sonde Observation (항공기 온도 관측 자료의 편향 보정 Part I: 존데와 비교를 통한 온도 편향 특성 분석)

  • In this study, the temperature bias of aircraft observation was estimated through comparison with sonde observation prior to developing the temperature bias correction method at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). First, we tried to compare aircraft temperature with collocated sonde observations at 0000 UTC on June 22, 2012. However, it was difficult to estimate the temperature bias due to the lack of samples and the uncertainty of the sonde position at high altitudes. Second, we attempted a background innovation comparison for sonde and aircraft using KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP). The one month averaged background innovation shows the aircraft temperature have a warm bias against sonde for all levels. In particular, there is a globally distinct warm bias about 0.4 K between 200 hPa and 300 hPa corresponding to flight level. Spatially, most of the areas showed the warm bias except for below 300 hPa in some part of China at 0000 and 1200 UTC and below 850 hPa in Australia at 0000 UTC. In general, the temperature bias was larger at 1200 UTC than 0000 UTC. Based on the estimated temperature bias, we have applied the static bias correction method to the aircraft temperature observation. As a result, the warm bias of the aircraft temperature has decreased at most levels, but a slight cold bias has occurred in some areas.

  • A single-piece-machined-part has superior characteristics to an assembly of several pieces of part especially for aircraft components. It is necessary to develop high efficient 'multi-head router machine' for machining a large size single-piece-part on a large scale. In this type machine, many cutting chips are generated. These chips should be removed automatically f3r productivity and part precision. In this study, the design evaluation of the cutting chip collecting apparatus for 'multi-head router machine' was complemented using performance test and finite element analysis.

An automatic 3D CAD model errors detection method of aircraft structural part for NC machining

  • Feature-based NC machining, which requires high quality of 3D CAD model, is widely used in machining aircraft structural part. However, there has been little research on how to automatically detect the CAD model errors. As a result, the user has to manually check the errors with great effort before NC programming. This paper proposes an automatic CAD model errors detection approach for aircraft structural part. First, the base faces are identified based on the reference directions corresponding to machining coordinate systems. Then, the CAD models are partitioned into multiple local regions based on the base faces. Finally, the CAD model error types are evaluated based on the heuristic rules. A prototype system based on CATIA has been developed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Fatigue Analysis for Newly Installed Blade Antenna of Aging Aircraft (노후 항공기 신규 블레이드 타입 안테나 장착에 따른 피로 해석 연구)

  • In this study, as a part of the aging aircraft performance improvement project for which no design information is provided, a new type of blade antenna is installed on the main part of the aging aircraft, and the method of proving the fatigue life of the main part of the aircraft is reviewed and summarized. There are various methods to prove fatigue life according to the manufacturer and aircraft design conditions. The fatigue life prediction and damage tolerance range of the relevant site were obtained through related regulations and industry examples. From these results, the fatigue life of newly installed antennas around the main parts of the aging aircraft was evaluated and the maintenance period and criteria were set according to the damage tolerance.
