This study is an overview of toxicities and measurement techniques of ultrafine particles (UFPs), and their exposure controls. UFPs are ubiquitous in many working situations. Exposure to UFPs is possibly causing adverse health symptoms including cardio-respiratory disease to humans. In order to measure exposure levels of airborne UFPs, there are current available measurement guidelines, instruments and other techniques (i.e. contour mapping, control banding). However, these risk assessment techniques including measurement techniques, controls and guidelines are dependent on background levels, metrics (e.g. size, mass, number, surface area, composition), environmental conditions and controls. There are no standardized measurement methods available and no generic and specific occupational exposure standards for UFPs. It is thought that there needs to be more effort to develop Regulations and Exposure Standards for generic UFPs should be based on more exposure data, health surveys, toxicological data and epidemiological data. A carefully considered hierarchy of controls can also reduce the maximum amount of airborne UFPs being emitted from diverse sources in industries.
Airborne suspended particulate concentration in drilling sites of underground coal mines in Taebaek area was evaluated. And respirable coal dust exposure level was evaluated. Airborne suspended particulate mass include total suspended particle(TSP) and thoracic particle(TPM). TSP (by open-face filter holder) and TPM(by elutriator) concentration were determined by low volume air samplers. Personal air samplers were attached to the coal workers including drillers, coal cutters, and their assistants. Normality and log-normality of TSP, TPM, and respirable dust(RPM) concentration were tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov one-sample test. Differences of means of TSP, TPM, and RPM concentration were tested by paired t-test. Relation between TSP, TPM, and RPM with pairs were tested by regression test and Pearson's correlation.

Airborne microorganisms, termed bioaerosols, are etiological agents of many respiratory and skin diseases. There are high demands of controlling the concentration of bioaerosols, specifically in indoor environments. Here, a new system for controlling indoor bioaerosols is designed and evaluated. An idea of a short time exposure to a thermal energy is used in the design of the equipment. The system was tested in laboratory environments. The experimental results show that the new system can reduce the concentration of viable bioaerosols of indoor laboratory environments.
We present the development of a wetcyclone sampler designed for the sampling of airborne bacteria. The wetcyclone design involves a combination of two traditional cyclone shapes and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to validate its effectiveness in terms of pressure drop and collection efficiency. The wetcyclone exhibits a collection efficiency of over 90% for bacteria, specifically targeting Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, the wetcyclone enables continuous bioaerosol sampling using a liquid medium (deionized water), demonstrating a concentration ratio exceeding >105 and a stable microbial recovery rate of 81.9%. The application of real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and the colony counting method ensures precise measurement of the concentration ratio and microbial recovery rate.
This study evaluated the airborne concentrations of bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi in waiting rooms, wards, and outdoors, according to time and particle size between October 17 and November 28, 2003. The geometric mean number of airborne bacteria was highest in the morning. The more people there were, the higher was the total bacteria concentration. The concentration of fungi was also highest in the morning. Temperature and relative humidity affected the concentrations of fungi significantly (p<0.05). This study found relationships between microorganism concentrations and (actors such as time, place, temperature, humidity, ventilation, and number of people. Therefore, to manage the pollution resulting from airborne microorganisms, each time, place, and environmental factor should be examined periodically, and the number, size, and movement of airborne microorganisms should be evaluated.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effect of three different surface treatments on the shear bond strength of lithium disilicate ceramics to enamel. Methods: Totally 60 lithium disilicate ceramic disc specimens were fabricated with IPS e.max press (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Mazic Claro (Vericom, Korea). 30 specimens in each lithium disilicate ceramic were assigned to 3 groups of the each following surface treatment: 1) $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion+silane, 2) 9.5% hydroflouric acid etching (HF)+silane, 3) $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion+9.5% HF+silane. Lithium disilicate ceramic surfaces after surface treatments were AFM examined. The shear bond strength was measured in a universal testing machine at 0.5mm/min crosshead speed. All data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The mean surface roughness of lithium disilicate ceramics ranged from $0.178{\mu}m$ to $0.441{\mu}m$. The mean shear bond strengths ranged from $23.81{\pm}2.78MPa$ to $33.99{\pm}4.85MPa$. Conclusion: 1. Mazic Claro showed higher shear bond strength than IPS e.max press at 3 different surface treatments, and no statistically significant was observed. 2. The shear bond strength of IPS e.max press was strongly enhanced as surface treated with $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion and 9.5% hydroflouric acid etching. And there was no statistical significance at the shear bond strength of Mazic Claro with surface treatments.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of various zirconia surface treatment methods on shear bond strength with resin cements. Methods: We prepared 120 cylindrical zirconia specimens (⌀10 mm×10 mm) using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Each specimen was randomly subjected to one of four surface treatment conditions: (1) no treatment (control), (2) airborne-particle abrasion with 50 ㎛ of Al2O3 (A50), (3) airborne-particle abrasion with 125 ㎛ of Al2O3 (A125), and (4) ZrO2 slurry (ZA). Using a polytetrafluoroethylene mold (⌀6 mm×3 mm), we applied three resin cements (Panavia F 2.0, Super-Bond C&B, and Variolink N) to each specimen. The shear bond strength tests were performed in a universal testing machine. The surfaces of representative specimens of each group were evaluated under scanning electron microscope. We used one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), two-way ANOVA, and post hoc Tukey honest significant difference test to analyze the data. Results: In the surface treatment method, the A50 group showed the highest bond strength, followed by A125, ZA, and control groups; however, no significant difference was observed between A50 and A125, A125 and ZA, and ZA and control (p>0.05). Among the resin cements, Super-Bond C&B showed the highest shear bond strength, followed by Panavia F 2.0 and Variolink N (p<0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, application of airborne-particle abrasion and ZrO2 slurry improved the shear bond strength of resin cement on zirconia.

The fine particles in the range of $30\~500nm$ are monitored at Hanyang University campus in Ansan using house made DMA (differential mobility analyzer) and commercial CPC (condensation particle counter, TSI inc.) in SMPS mode. The monitoring period is March 16th 2004 through May 7th, 2004. During the monitoring period, Aitken nuclei mode $(30\~100nm)$ particle concentration has a tendency of increase in the morning and evening hours. However, the accumulation mode $(100\~500nm)$ particle concentration stays rather stable than that of Aitken mode.
Cryptomeria japonica pollen is the most common pollen, which are scattering during each spring season in Japan. Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) pollinosis is one of seasonal allergic rhinitis that mainly occurs in Japan. In addition, long range transportation of Yellow Sand from the East Asian continent was also found during the pollen scattering seasons in Japan. Therefore, the interaction or impact between pollen and Yellow Sand should be concerned. In this study, our objective was to investigate the airborne behaviour of Cryptomeria japonica pollen grains and its size-segregated allergenic (Cry j 1) particles as the airborne tracer of Cryptomeria japonica pollen during the Yellow Sand events. Airborne Cryptomeria japonica pollen grains and its size-segregated allergenic particles were collected at roadside of urban residential zones of Saitama city during the pollination periods from February to March in two year investigation of 2009 and 2010. The overlap of Yellow Sand events and dispersal peak of pollen grains was observed. According to the Meteorological data, we found that the peaks of airborne pollen grains appeared under higher wind speed and temperature than the previous day. It was thought that Yellow Sand events and airborne pollen counts were related to wind speed. From the investigation of the airborne behavior of the size-segregated allergen particles by determining Cry j 1 with Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), the higher concentrations of the allergenic Cry j 1 were detected in particle size equal to or less than $1.1{\mu}m$($PM_{1.1}$) than other particle sizes during Yellow Sand events, especially in the rainy day. We conclude that rainwater trapping Yellow Sand is one of the important factors that affect the release of allergenic pollen species of Cry j 1. Therefore, it is very important to clarify the relationships between Cryptomeria japonica pollen allergenic species and chemical contents of the Yellow Sand particles in further studies.
Phosphate rock, phosphogypsum, and products in phosphate processing facility contain naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). Therefore, they may give rise to enhanced radiation dose to workers due to inhalation of airborne particulates. Internal dose due to particle inhalation varies depending on particle properties. The objective of the present study was to characterize particle properties at the largest phosphate processing facility in Korea. A cascade impactor was employed to sample airborne particulates at various processing areas in the plant. The collected samples were used for characterization of particle size distribution, particle concentration in the air, and shape analysis. Aerodynamic diameters of airborne particulates ranged 0.03-100 ${\mu}m$ with the highest concentration at the particle size range of 4.7-5.8 ${\mu}m$ (geometric mean = 5.22 ${\mu}m$) or 5.8-9.0 ${\mu}m$ (geometric mean = 7.22 ${\mu}m$). Particle concentrations in the air varied widely by sampling area up to more than two orders of magnitude. The large variation resulted from the variability of mechanical operations and building ventilations. The airborne particulates appeared as spheroids or rough spherical fragments across all sampling areas and sampled size intervals. Average mass densities of phosphate rocks, phosphogypsums, and fertilizers were 3.1-3.4, 2.1-2.6, and 1.7 $gcm^{-3}$, respectively. Radioactivity concentration of uranium series in phosphate rocks varied with country of origin, ranging 94-866 $Bqkg^{-1}$. Among the uranium series, uranium was mostly concentrated on products, including phosphoric acid or fertilizers whereas radium was concentrated on byproducts or phosphogypsum. No significant radioactivity of $^{226}Ra$ and $^{228}Ra$ were found in fertilizer. However, $^{40}K$ concentration in fertilizer was up to 5,000 Bq $g^{-1}$. The database established in this study can be used for the accurate risk assessment of workers due to inhalation of airborne particles containing NORM. In addition, the findings can be used as a basic data for development of safety standard and guide and for practical radiation safety management at the facility.
