  • In an original effort, this lab attempted to employ polystyrene nanoparticles as a template for the synthesis of ordered and highly porous macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films, utilizing their high combustion temperature and narrow size distribution. However, polystyrene nanoparticle thin films were not obtained due to the low interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. However, polystyrene-polyacrylic acid (PS-AA) colloidal particles of a core-shell structure were synthesized by a one-pot miniemulsion polymerization approach, with hydrophilic polyacrylic acid tails on the particle surface that improved interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. The PS-AA thin films were spin-coated in the thickness ranges from monolayer to approximately $1.0\;{\mu}m$. Using the PS-AA thin films as sacrificial templates, macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films were successfully synthesized by vapor deposition or conventional solution sol-gel infiltration methods. Inspection with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that the macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films consist of interconnected air balls (~100 nm). Typical macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films showed ultralow refractive indices ranging from 1.098 to 1.138 at 633 nm, according to the infiltration conditions, which were confirmed by spectroscopy ellipsometry (SE) measurements. This research shows how the synthetic control of the macromolecule such as hydrophilic polystyrene nanopaticles and silicate sol precursors innovates the optical properties and processabilities for actual applications.

  • The adhesive mechanisms on the metal-ceramic restorations have been reported to be mechanical interlocking, chemical bonding, compressive force, and Van der Waal's force, etc. Of these, the mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding forces are thought to affect the adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain. This study investigates the adhesion of Ni-Cr alloy to porcelain according to surface treatment. For this purpose, the following experiments were made; The compositions of Ni-Cr alloy as cast by emission spectrograph, and the oxides produced on Ni-Cr alloy during degassing at $1850^{\circ}F$ for 30 minutes in air and in vacuum were analyzed by X-ray diffractograph. The metal phases of Ni-Cr alloy were observed according to porcelain-baking cyclic heat treatment by photo microscope and the distribution and the shift of elements of Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain and the failure phases between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain by scanning electron microscope. The adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain was measured according to surface treatment with oxidization and roughening by Instron Universal Testing Machine. Results were as follows; 1. The metal phases of Ni-Cr alloy as cast and degassing state showed the enlarged and fused core, but when subjected to porcelain-baking cyclic heat treatment, showed a dendrite growing. 2. The kinds of metal oxides produced on Ni-Cr alloy during degassing were found to be NiO and $Cr_2O_3$. 3. The distribution of elements at the interface of Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain in degassing state showed demarcation line, but in roughening state, showed mechanical interlocking phase. 4. The shift of elements at the interface occurred in both states, but the shift amount was found to be larger in roughening than in degassing. 5. The adhesive force between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain was found to be $3.45{\pm}0.93kg/mm^2$, in degassing and $3.82{\pm}0.99kg/mm^2$, in roughening. 6. The failure phase between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain showed the mixed type failure.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of different surface treatment methods on the bond strength between aged composite-resin core and luting agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventy-five resin composites and also seventy-five zirconia ceramic discs were prepared. 60 composite samples were exposed to thermal aging (10,000 cycles, 5 to $55^{\circ}C$) and different surface treatment. All specimens were separated into 5 groups (n=15): 1) Intact specimens 2) Thermal aging-air polishing 3) Thermal aging- Er:YAG laser irradiation 4) Thermal aging- acid etching 5) Thermal-aging. All specimens were bonded to the zirconia discs with resin cement and fixed to universal testing machine and bond strength testing loaded to failure with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The fractured surface was classified as adhesive failure, cohesive failure and adhesive-cohesive failure. The bond strength data was statistically compared by the Kruskal-Wallis method complemented by the Bonferroni correction Mann-Whitney U test. The probability level for statistical significance was set at ${\alpha}$=.05. RESULTS. Thermal aging and different surface treatment methods have significant effect on the bond strength between composite-resin cores and luting-agent (P<.05). The mean baseline bond strength values ranged between $7.07{\pm}2.11$ and $26.05{\pm}6.53$ N. The highest bond strength of $26.05{\pm}6.53$ N was obtained with Group 3. Group 5 showed the lowest value of bond strength. CONCLUSION. Appropriate surface treatment method should be applied to aged composite resin cores or aged-composites restorations should be replaced for the optimal bond strength and the clinical success.

  • Exposure rates due to leakage gamma-rays from operating reactors TRIGA Mark II and III were measured in a horizontal plane by means of scintillation spectrometry using a 3"$\times$3" cylindrical Nal(T1) detector associated with a 400 channel pulse height analyzer under varied conditions of reactor operation. In determining exposure rate due to the leakage gamma-rays at each point of measurement, Moriuchi's spectrum-exposure rate conversion theory was applied instead of using conventional responce matrix method which necessitates very complicated procedures to convert a spectrum into exposure rate. The results show that a basic pattern of "typical" spectrum of the reactor leakage gamma-rays is neither affected by thermal output of the reactor, nor influenced by overall attenuation in radiation intensity. It was indicated that he attenuation of the leakage gamma-rays in air in terms of exposure rate as a whole follows an exponential law, and the total exposure rate due to the leakage gamma-rays at a certain point is nearly proportional to thermal output of the reactor. The complexity in spectrum measured for a movable core reactor, TRIGA Mark III, was analyzed through spectrum resolution, and proper judgement of the leakage gamma-rays in a complex spectrum was discussed.ctrum was discussed.

  • In accordance with tendency to miniaturization and high frequency operation of electronic products, extensive efforts of miniaturizing magnetic devices such as inductors, transformers and magnetic sensors are being made. In order to study on fabrication and characteristic of micro-magnetic devices, we carried out two sets of experiments. One is to develop a magnetic film that is suitable for high frequency operation, and the other is to develop the fabrication processes for realizing the micro-coil with meander shape. Magnetic films were composed of FeTa(N,C) fabricated by DC magnetron sputtering system. Their microstructures were nanocrystalline structure and magnetic properties showed Bs:13~17 kG, Hc:0.1~0.2 Oe and $\mu$':2000~4000. Cu coil pattern fabricated by selective electroplating process showed good electrical conductivity. In the case of air core inductors, inductance (L) of 50 nH, resonance frequency $(f_R)$ of 700 MHz, and quality factor (Q) of 30 at 200 MHz could be obtained. In the case of close type magnetic inductors, inductance (L) of 150 nH, resonance frequency $(f_R)$ of 100 MHz, and quality factor (Q) of 4 at 10~30 MHz could be obtained.

  • Currently, due to the serious world-wide air pollution by substances emitted from vehicles, emission control is enforced more firmly and it is expected that the regulation requirements for emission will become more severe. A new concept combustion technology that can reduce the NOx and PM in relation to combustion is urgently required. Due to such social requirement, technologically advanced countries are making efforts to develop an environment-friendly vehicle engine at the nation-wide level in order to respond to the reinforced emission control. As a core combustion technology among new combustion technologies for the next generation engine, the homogenous charge compression ignition(HCCI) is expanding its application range by adopting multiple combustion mode, catalyst, direct fuel injection and partially premixed combustion. This study used a 2-staged injection method in order to apply the HCCI combustion method without significantly altering engine specifications in the aspect of multiple combustion mode and practicality by referring to the results of studies on the HCCI engine. In addition, this study confirmed the possibility of securing optimum fuel economy emission reduction in the IMEP 8bar range(which could not be achieved with existing partially premixed combustion) through forced charging, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR), compression ratio change and application of DOC catalyst.

  • The electric vehicle business is important because it can reduce 30% of the fine dust generated in the metropolitan area and it can solve the air pollution problem by replacing automobile exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine with eco-friendly electric cars. For the construction of the electric charging station infrastructure, which is the core part of the electric car business, we focus to select the optimal location of the electric car charging station in Seoul. The goal of this paper is to utilize and analyze the traffic statistics of T-Map navigation users data and Seoul Metropolitan Transportation Policy Department to deploy the electric cars charging station with optimal location to increase the efficiency. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is composed of two parts of electric charging station selection. First, we analyze real traffic statistics and area. Second, we utilize T-Map navigation data distribution. To select optimal electric charging station location, we apply these two algorithms.
