  • Nowadays, with urban railway vehicles, refrigeration has been used for a long time as an air conditioner including a heating apparatus and a ventilator. Regarding saveenergy, there are lots of researches continually on the refrigeration field to reduce the parts' weight, improve the parts' efficiency and make good looking design of air conditioners. Moreover, we are able to see the recent achievement of the researches. As a result, through this research we will improve the quality of inner air with the urban railway system and make a domestic HVAC system by technical development of high capacity air conditioner and the principal parts.

  • The cross-flow fans have been widely used to constitute the air moving systems in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning devices. The cross-flow fan system has many design parameters which have crucial influence on the performance and the noise characteristics of the devices. As a result, there are many difficulties in the design stage of the devices and the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet. This study presents the experimental results of the parametric investigation of some chosen design parameters, which are the shape of the stabilizer, the profile of the scroll casing, and the diffusion angle of the flow exit. The results are expressed as the fan performance and the specific sound pressure level characteristic. These parts have been found to have crucial effects on the system performance/noise characteristics and should be considered with care in the design stage.

Experimental study on the hydrophilic performance of pre-coated aluminum foil (알루미늄 호일의 친수코팅 성능 개선에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • It is usual to use hydrophilic-coated aluminum foil for evaporator fin of air-conditioners to reduce air flow resistance caused by the water droplets condensed on the fin surface. The major effect of a hydrophilic coating is to reduce the contact angle of the condensate and prevent bridging of the condensate between the adjacent fins. The performance of hydrophilic coating generally tends to be degraded as it is used since the coating material is washed down by the condensate. In the present work, several types of hydrophilic coatings were evaluated in terms of durability of hydrophilicity, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Results showed that an improved hydrophilic coating of resin type presented superb qualify in terms of durability and corrosion resistance while having almost the same level of qualify in heat resistance compared with the others.

A Deep Belief Network for Electricity Utilisation Feature Analysis of Air Conditioners Using a Smart IoT Platform

  • Currently, electricity consumption and feedback mechanisms are being widely researched in Internet of Things (IoT) areas to realise power consumption monitoring and management through the remote control of appliances. This paper aims to develop a smart electricity utilisation IoT platform with a deep belief network for electricity utilisation feature modelling. In the end node of electricity utilisation, a smart monitoring and control module is developed for automatically operating air conditioners with a gateway, which connects and controls the appliances through an embedded ZigBee solution. To collect electricity consumption data, a programmable smart IoT gateway is developed to connect an IoT cloud server of smart electricity utilisation via the Internet and report the operational parameters and working states. The cloud platform manages the behaviour planning functions of the energy-saving strategies based on the power consumption features analysed by a deep belief network algorithm, which enables the automatic classification of the electricity utilisation situation. Besides increasing the user's comfort and improving the user's experience, the established feature models provide reliable information and effective control suggestions for power reduction by refining the air conditioner operation habits of each house. In addition, several data visualisation technologies are utilised to present the power consumption datasets intuitively.

Computer Simulation Study for Analyzing Alternative Refrigerants in Residential Air-conditioners (가정용 냉방기의 대체 냉매 성능 분석을 위한 전산 해석 연구)

  • This paper is concerned about alternative refrigerants for HCFC22 used in room air conditioners and heat pumps. Computer simulation of residential air conditioners using refrigerant mixtures is carried out. Following refrigerants are selected as the pure refrigerants constituting the mixtures studied: R32, R124, R125, R134, R134a, R143a and R152a. Simulation results are presented fur the following mixtures: R32/R134a, R32/R152a, R32/R134, R32/R124, R143a/R134a, R143a/R152a, R143a/R124, R125/R134a, R125/R152a, R125/R124, R32/R152a/R134a, R32/R152a/R134, R32/R152a/R124. The best fluid is found to be the ternary mixture of R32/R152a/R124. For that mixture, the coefficient of performance(COP) and volumetric capacity for refrigeration(VCR) are 13.7% larger and 23% smaller than the respective values for HCFC22. R32/R124 mixture is the best binary fluid pair whose COP and VCR are 13.4% larger and 9.6% smaller than those for HCFC22.

Performance Evaluation of a Parallel Flow Condenser for Automotive Air Conditioners (자동차 에어컨용 평행류 응축기의 성능평가)

  • The new shape of louver-fin has been applied to a parallel flow condenser to enhance air-side heat transfer rate lot an automotive air-conditioner R- l34a is employed as a refrigerant inside the flat tube of the condenser, This problem is of particular interest in reducing the geometric size of the automotive air conditioner The effect of air flow rate on pressure drop as well as heat transfer in air side are studied in detail. Comparison of the performance is also made with that of a conventional parallel flow condenser, which is available in the market. The results obtained indicate that the total pressure drop through the pre sent condenser is not changed, while the heat transfer rate is increased by 24% at high veto city of air flow, compared with those of the conventional condenser. The parallel flow condenser with a new shape of louver-fin could be reduced in size by 20% for the equivalent condenser capacity, compared with the conventional parallel flow condenser.

  • Many studies are being conducted with the aim of reducing the energy consumption in data centers, which are one of the highest consumers of energy. The use of an air-side economizer system that uses external air during intermediate and winter seasons is being considered for reducing the energy consumption of air conditioners. In this study, using the energy simulation, we evaluated the energy performance of a central chilled water cooling system and air-side economizer system in domestic data centers. Further, the cost-effectiveness of the air-side economizer was analyzed through Life-Cycle Cost Analysis. The results showed that with the use of air-side economizer systems, the energy costs increased as the applied filter grade increased; however, unlike existing central chilled water systems, it would break even within 2 years.

Comparison of Condenser Characteristics using R410A and R22 under the Same Inlet Temperature Condition (동일한 유입온도조건에서 R410A와 R22 적용 응축기의 특성비교)

  • R410A is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R410A flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass flux varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for refrigerant side. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 16% is needed for R410A than that of R22 for subcooling temperature of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted in air-side pressure drop decrease of 15% for R410A as compared to R22. As a consequence, in order to provide the same design condition of a condenser, the fan requires lower electric-power consumption with R410A than that with R22.

A Study on the Characteristics an Azeotropic Mixture Combined with CF_{3}I and a Refrigerant for Air-Conditioner HFC-152a and HFC-152a

  • In these days, environmental concerns have been increased throughout the industry and community worldwide. To prevent the ozone depletion, ozone depletion potential of a refrigerant must be zero. Simultaneously, a refrigerant with low GWP (global warming potential) is very demanding to reduce green house effect. Chlorine-free HFC-l34a is a refrigerant widely used for automotive air-conditioning system because its destruction potential is ecologically zero. Although HFC-l34a has no ozone depletion potential, its global warming potential is so high that it is not considered as a perfect alternative refrigerant that is acceptable for long-term use. In this paper, experimental measurement has been carried out to analyze the performance characteristics of automotive air-conditioning system using HFC-152a, which has low GWP and zero ODP. Also mixed refrigerant that is composed of HFC-152a and $CF_3$ was applied to investigate an alternative possibility for the automotive air-conditioning system. As a result of this study, we could draw following conclusions; With respect to the variation of the rotational speed of compressor, outside air temperature and flow rate, the heat amount of evaporator and compressor and performance coefficient was varied.

A Study on The Performance of Ventilation and Thermal Environment for a Combined Type Diffuser in a Residential Space (거주공간에 대한 급·배기 일체형 디퓨저의 환기 및 온열환경 유지성능에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, the combined-type diffuser developed by the Authors, in a previous study, was applied to a residential space. The performance of a ventilation and thermal environment, created by the use of a combined-type diffuser was compared to the pan-type diffuser widely used in apartment houses. In cooling conditions, because of the relatively high air flow rate of ceiling cassette-type air conditioners, the characteristics of airflow distribution in a room were governed by the air conditioner's airflow. In heating conditions, because of the low air flow rate of the diffuser, the characteristics of airflow distribution were governed by the buoyancy effect created by cold external walls and a hot floor. In terms of the Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI), which is a thermal environmental index, the result of a combined-type diffuser was greater than a pan-type diffuser in both of cooling and heating conditions. Consequently, the combined-type diffuser showed equal or superior ventilation and thermal environment performance compared to a pan-type diffuser.
