  • The AE measurement is one of the most convenient methods for detecting contacts between the slider and the disk. The AE method has been widely used in the investigation of the tribology of sliding interfaces due to its convenience. We examined the relationship between the AE signal and the flying height of a slider. We investigated the influence of the disk linear velocity on the AE rms signal by using the AE measurement system. The experiment also gives the relationship between the take-off velocity and the disk surface conditions. To investigate the behavior of the slider further, the variances of the AE signals are analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the increase in the magnitude of the AE rms signal does not necessarily mean the slider/disk contacts.

The AE method has been widely used in the investigation of the tribology of sliding interfaces due to the convenience of using AE sensor. In this study, we examined the relationship between the AE signal and the flying height of a slider. We tried to know the influence of the disk velocity on the AE rms signal by using the AE measurement system. The experiment also gives the relationship between the take-off velocity and the disk surface state. To investigate the behavior of the slider further, the variances of the AE signal are analyzed. The results about a subambient pressure slider indicate that the increase in the magnitude of AE rms signal does not necessarily mean the slider/disk contacts.

  • The effect of silver particles on the sliding behavior of bearing steels was studied experimentally by using a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were performed in ambient air, dry air and vacuum. Disks of AISI 52100 were silver-coated by a thermal evaporation method, and the effects of silver particle transfer on friction were analyzed. In order to understand further the mechanism of silver particle transfer and its effect on friction and wear, pre-compressed silver particles were artificially introduced into the friction interface and the results were compared to those of silver-coated specimens. Results showed that the introduced silver particles produced transfer layers and resulted in low friction. It also showed that this low friction is closely related to the characteristic behavior of transfer layers. Shakedown occurred at the friction interface affected the friction and wear.

  • The inlet pressure build-up at the leading edge of bearings which have discontinuous lubrication surface is analyzed theoretically. The analyses of Inlet pressure build-up is obtained by means of full Navier-stokes equations. Beam-warming method is used to solve navier-stokes equations. The results show that inlet pressure is above atmosphere pressure in front of leading edge of hearing.

  • In the present study, we investigated whether the surface oxidation of C-bearing TWIP steel ℃curs in the air during specimen delivery from an annealing furnace to a water bath and how the microstructure and tensile properties are influenced by surface oxidation. A cold-rolled Fe-18Mn-0.6 (wt%) steel was exposed in the air for 5 s after annealing at various temperatures (750℃, 850℃ and 1000℃) for 10 min in a vacuum, and then water-quenched. For comparison, another specimen, which had been quartz-sealed in a vacuum, was annealed at 1000℃ for 10 min and immediately water-quenched without exposure to air. The 750℃ and 850℃-annealed specimens and the quartz-sealed specimen showed a γ-austenite single phase in the entire specimen due to negligible surface oxidation. However, the 1000℃-annealed specimen exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ε-martensite and γ-austenite at the sub-surface due to decarburization. Whereas the specimens without decarburization revealed high elongations of 70-80%, the decarburized specimen exhibited a low elongation of ~40%, indicating premature failure due to cracking inside the decarburized layer with ε-martensite and γ-austenite.

  • Recently, a load/unload(L/UL) system is adopted to the hard disk drive(HDD) due to its advantages such as lower power consumption, larger data zone, simpler fabrication of disk due to no bumped parking zone, and rarer contact between slider and media. An analysis of the transient motion for the slider is very important to design an air bearing surface(ABS) of the slider to secure the stable performance of the system. During the L/UL process, however, there are several issues occurred such as contact or collision between slider and media. Sometimes this will cause the system failure. In this study, the dynamics of a pico slider during the loading process are investigated through numerical simulation using FEM analysis and experiment. Ramp profile and angular velocity of the swing arm actuator are very important parameters for the design of L/UL system to avoid collision between slider and disk.

  • This paper deals with the micro turning property of setting angle using diamond tool. The bed of the system has used the granite which has the thermal and vibrational characteristics superior to the cast iron bed for the common machine tool. To minimize the inner and outer vibration of the fuming system, an air pad system was manufactured and tested. The aero-static spindle system which has the excellent rotation accuracy was designed and manufactured. As a result of the micro-cutting test on aluminum alloy, tool setting angel have effected on surface roughness. From the results, the micro-cutting conditions hope to provide the useful actual data using in industrial fields.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of adsorbed moisture on the rolling resistance behavior of pure silver-coated 52100 bearing steel. Plasma surface modifications were performed on the silver-coated specimen to change the wetting characteristics. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-type rolling test-rig were performed under vacuum, dry air and various humidity conditions. Results showed that the changes in the wetting characteristics influenced remarkably on the silver particle agglomeration and resulted in the different behavior of rolling resistance with humidity.

  • When slipping occurs between two materials, the coefficients of friction must be considered because these values determine the overall efficiency of the machine or slip characteristics. Therefore, it is important to find the coefficient of friction between two materials. This paper focuses on obtaining the coefficient of friction between an aiming bolt and a retainer located in the headlamps of a vehicle. This bolt supports the headlamp, and if the bolt is loosened by external vibration, the angle of the light will change and block the vision of pedestrians or other drivers. In order to study these situations, the coefficient of friction between aiming bolts and retainers needs to be measured. In addition, the coefficient of friction of materials used in the headlamp should be obtained. To determine these two factors, a new device is designed for two cases: surface-surface contact and surface-line contact. To increase reliability of the results, the device is designed using an air-bearing stage which uses compressed air as lubricant to eliminate the friction of the stage itself. Experiments were carried out by applying various vertical forces, and the results show that the coefficient of friction can be measured consistently. The procedure for designing the device and the results are discussed.
