Swirl injector with adjustable backhole length was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of swirl injector as an acoustic absorber, swirl injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator and its damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. Experiments were carried out with copied tubes on air core because the interior air core volume of injector has a direct effect on damping. From the experimental data, it is proved that increasing the number of injectors mounted at each anti-node point can increase acoustic damping effect. Also, when tuned injectors at 1L, 1T, 1L1T modes simultaneously are installed at each anti-node point of model chamber, the damping effect of tuned injectors with multi modes agree well with it of tuned injectors with single mode.
In order to protect a structure over its full life cycle, a novel tuned mass damper (TMD), the so-called semi-active eddy current pendulum tuned mass damper (SAEC-PTMD), which can retune its frequency and damping ratio in real-time, is proposed in this study. The structural instantaneous frequency is identified through a Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT), and the SAEC-PTMD pendulum is adjusted through an HHT-based control algorithm. The eddy current damping parameters are discussed, and the relationship between effective damping coefficients and air gaps is fitted through a polynomial function. The semi-active eddy current damping can be adjusted in real-time by adjusting the air gap based on the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG)-based control algorithm. To verify the vibration control effect of the SAEC-PTMD, an idealized linear primary structure equipped with an SAEC-PTMD excited by harmonic excitations and near-fault pulse-like earthquake excitations is proposed as one of the two case studies. Under strong earthquakes, structures may go into the nonlinear state, while the Bouc-Wen model has a wild application in simulating the hysteretic characteristic. Therefore, in the other case study, a nonlinear primary structure based on the Bouc-Wen model is proposed. An optimal passive TMD is used for comparison and the detuning effect, which results from the cumulative damage to primary structures, is considered. The maximum and root-mean-square (RMS) values of structural acceleration and displacement time history response, structural acceleration, and displacement response spectra are used as evaluation indices. Power analyses for one earthquake excitation are presented as an example to further study the energy dissipation effect of an SAECPTMD. The results indicate that an SAEC-PTMD performs better than an optimized passive TMD, both before and after damage occurs to the primary structure.
Rotating disks are used in various machines such as floppy disks, hard disk, turbines and circular sawblades. The problems of vibrations of rotating disks are important in improving these machines. Many investigators have dealt with these problem. Specially, vibrations of a rotating flexible disk taking into account the effect of air is difficult problem in simulation. The governing equation of a rotating flexible disk coupled to the surrounding fluid is investigated by a simple mathematical model. And several important parameters concerned with the stability of a rotating flexible disk are defined. Coupling strength between air and rotating flexible disk is proportional to square of disk radius directly and square root of the all of bending rigidity, disk density and thickness inversely. Lift-to-damping coefficient has relation to the onset of disk flutter.

This study presents a method for determining bearing stiffness and damping coefficients of air-lubricated slider bearing, and shows influences of air-bearing surface geometry(recess depth, crown an d pivot location) on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics. To derive the dynamic lubrication equation, the perturbation method is applied to the generalized lubrication equation which based on linearized Boltzmann equation. The generalized lubrication equation and the dynamic lubrication equation are converted to a control volume formulation, and then, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite difference method. The recess depth and crown of the slider show significantly influence on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics comparing with those of pivot location.

In the process of accurate manufacture and measurement, it is necessarily required to isolate external or internal vibration due to external disturbance and internal actuators. The higher vibration isolation system gets damping around resonance, the better it is generally. This paper analyzes the performance of an existing passive air-spring for vibration isolation table by using experiment and simulation. Optimal design for a passive air spring can be obtained by tuning the size of the orifice. Also design for an active isolation system is carried out by applying PID controller and considering non-linearity of pneumatic characteristics with help of look-up table. We have developed the active vibration isolation table with the better isolation performance.

The air gap between electromagnet and guiderail in an EMS-type Maglev vehicle must be maintained within an allowable deviation by controlling the voltage on the magnet. In this type of vehicle, the air gap response is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics of the elevated guideway, such as stiffness, damping and mass. For this reason, the dynamic interaction between the vehicle with electromagnets and the elevated guideway must be understood to ensure safe running. The response of the air gap to guideway characteristics such as mass, stiffness, and damping are analyzed through vehicle tests over different guideways. Through such tests, the design requirements for Maglev vehicles and elevated guideways can be established, improving levitation stability.

In the last couple of years, the flexible optical disk(FOD) system that consists of a thin polycarbonate(PC) film of 95 ${\mu}m$ thick, a rigid stabilizer, and a high speed spindle motor has been spot-lighted as the next-generation optical system for archival use of digital data. The air film between the rotating disk and stabilizer provides a means for damping out the lateral disk vibrations. However, its damping-capability drops significantly as the rotational speed of the disk exceeds a specific limit and, eventually, the disk vibration propagates inward causing the whole span of the disk exhibits large vibration amplitudes. Based on the numerical simulations as well as the experimental results, the present work aims to evaluate the damping coefficient of the air-film near the outer region of the disk where the capillary type orifices are applied to the edge of the curved stabilizer.
Gas foil bearings (GFBs) enable small- to medium-sized turbomachinery to operate at ultra-high speeds in a compact design by using ambient air or process gas as a lubricant. When using air or process gas, which have lower viscosity than lubricant oil, the turbomachinery has the advantage of reduced power loss from bearing friction drag. However, GFBs may have high Reynolds number, which causes turbulent flows due to process gas with low viscosity and high density. This paper analyzes gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) with high Reynolds numbers and studies the effects of turbulent flows on the static and dynamic performance of bearings. For comparison purposes, air and R-134a gas lubricants are applied to the GFJBs. For the air lubricant, turbulence is dominant only at rotor speeds higher than 200 krpm. At those speeds, the journal eccentricity decreases, but the film thickness, power loss, and direct stiffness and damping coefficients increase. On the other hand, the R-134a gas lubricant, which that has much higher density than air, causes dominant turbulence at rotor speeds greater than 10 krpm. The turbulent flow model predicts decreased journal eccentricity but increased film thickness and power loss when compared with the lamina flow model predictions. The vertical direct stiffness and damping coefficients are lower at speeds below 100 krpm, but higher beyond that speeds for the turbulent model. The present results indicate that turbulent flow effects should be considered for accurate performance predictions of GFJBs with high Reynolds number.

A flexible structure submerged in acoustic fluid is affected by its surrounding fluid. In transient response of a submerged structure, the coupled effect between structures and surrounding fluid emerges as damping and added mass at early and late time, respectively. Therefore, the characteristics of submerged structure such as natural frequencies and damping coefficients are changed by its surrounding fluid. In this paper, the analytic modal equation of a spherical shell surrounded by water and air is dealt with. Through the example, the damping coefficients and natural frequencies of flexible structures are studied for various external acoustic fluid and structures.
