  • Melanogenesis refers to the biosynthesis of melanin pigment in melanocytes. Melanogenesis is controlled by the intra- and extracellular environments. In the present study, to develop a new whitening agent, it was investigated the antioxidant activity and the inhibitory effect of Ailanthi Radicis Cortex extract on tyrosinase activity and on melanogenesis in the B16/F1 melanoma cells. The inhibition ratio of tyrosinase activity of ethylacetate fraction from Ailanthi Radicis Cortex was higher than that of arbutin. The ethylacetate fraction showed scavenging activities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and superoxide anion radicals in a dose dependent manner. The highest inhibitory activity of melanogenesis was also in ethylacetate fraction ($40.0{\pm}5%$ at the concentration of $400{\mu}g/ml$). This study demonstrates that the Ailanthi Radicis Cortex extract might be used to be a potential agent for skin whitening.

  • During the serial attempts to identify the chemical and biological characteristics of Ailanthi Cortex Radicis, the root bark of Ailanthus altissima (Simaroubaceae), we find out the serious toxic effect on kidney by chloroform fraction of the methanolic extract of the herb drug. The toxicities were revealed as the increase of urea nitrogen amount in blood and lactate dehydrogenase and ${\gamma}-glutamyltransferase$ activities in urine and the decrease of the concentration of glutathione and both of protein bound and non-protein bound -SH in kidney tissue.

  • The cytotoxic activities of methanolic extract and its fractions of Ailanthi Cortex Radicis and column chromatographic eluates of its dichloromethane fraction (DCM fr.) were investigated. DCM fr. Showed the strongest cytotoxicity against hepatoma cells. Furthermore, the active equates 1-3, 8 and 9 were obtained. Effects on free radical generation and the growth of vascular endothelial cells were tested to elucidate the action mechanism of anticancer activity. Eluates 1-3 stimulated free radical generation, while eluates 8 and 9 showed no changes. Especially, eluates 8 and 9 efffectively inhibited the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells in a dose- dependant manner. It is speculated that the anticancer effects of eluates 1-3, 8 and 9 might be due to free radical generation and inhibition of endothelial cell growth, respectively.

  • For the biological survey, effects of Ailanthi Cortex Radicis, the root bark of Ailanthus altissima(Simaroubaceae) on epoxide hydrolyzing enzymes were checked. The methanolic extract and its chloroform fraction were shown to activate the liver metabolizing enzyme system including epoxide hydrolase system which was monitored by activities of transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and epoxide hydrolase system in bromobenzene treated rats. But they showed no effect on glutathione S-transferase activity.

  • Objective This study was designed to define the efficacy of medicinal herbs of Taeeumin in Sasang constitutional medicine. Method We searched and analyzed original text such as Donguisusebowon Sinchuk edition written in 1901, Donguisusebowon Gabo edition written in 1894, Donguisusebowon Sansang Chobongwon, and posthumous manuscripts left by Je-ma Lee published by the Ministry of Health of North Korea. Results Seven herbs such as Ephedrae Herba, Coicis Semen, Castaneae Semen, Fel Ursi, Mori Cortex Radicis, Ginkgonis Semen, and Farfarae Flos regulate the mechanism of Esophagus-Cold (Wiwanhan). Three herbs such as Melonis Pedicellus, Ailanthi Radicis Cortex, and Quisqualis Fructus regulate the mechanism of Cold Lung-Dry (HanpaeJo). Sixteen herbs such as Rhei Rhizoma, Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix, Puerariae Radix, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Moschus, Gleditsiae Spina, Mume Fructus, Aurum, Glycine Semen Germinatum, Ampelopsis Radix, Cornu rhinocerotis, Antelopis Cornu, Bomeolum, Bezoar Bovis, and Typhae Pollen regulate the mechanism of Liver-Heat (Ganyeol). Three herbs such as Chrysanthemi Indici Flos, Nelumbinis Semen, and Spirodelae Herba regulate the mechanism of Heat Lung-Dry (YeolpaeJo). Conclusion Forty four herbs of Taeeumin regulate the mechanisms of Esophagus-Cold (Wiwanhan), Cold Lung-Dry (HanpaeJo), Liver-Heat (Ganyeol), Heat Lung-Dry (YeolpaeJo) and correct the energy-fluid pathology of Taeeumin.

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effects of Astringent medicinals against vaginal microbe. Methods : Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis were used for vaginitis-induced microbe. Lactobacillus gasseri, Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli HB101 were used for normal vaginal florae. And Astringent medicinals (Rubi Fructus, Tritici Immatri Semen, Corni Fructus, Nelumbinis Semen, Mume Fructus, Schizandrae Fructus, Ailanthi Radicis Cortex, Galla Rhois, Myristicae Semen, Terminariae Fructus, Rosae laevigatae Fructus, Ephedrae Radix) were used in this study. Antimicrobial activities were tested by optical density and colony test in vitro. And then wee valuated the antimicrobial effects in comparison with optical density and colony test. Results : The optical density and colony test showed that Terminariae Fructus and Galla Rhois among Astringent medicinals had the antimicrobial effects. Teminariae Fructus had the antimicrobial susceptibility and selective toxicity against Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis of vaginitis-induced microbe. Galla Rhois had the antimicrobial susceptibility and selective toxicity against Staphylococus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococus aureus, Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis of vaginitis-induced microbe. Conclusion : According to these results, we can suggest that Terminariae Fructus and Galla Rhois among Astringent medicinals be available to the antimicrobial agent of vaginitis-induced microbe in vitro.
