  • Photoreactivation of microorganism following UV-disinfection is one of the research topics of interest in assessing the UV-disinfection performance. Apparent photoreactivation was examined under fluorescent lamp and solar radiation as well as in darkness. Total coliform, fecal coliform, and Escherichia coli were used as indicator microorganisms, and their concentration was monitored with time after UV-disinfection. Under the darkness, their initial concentration of 10∼30 MPN/100 mL increased to the level of 100 MPN/100 mL after 24 hours, which implied that part of damaged microorganisms by UV-disinfection might be repairable with time. Under the fluorescent lamp, photoreactivation was more apparent that their concentration increased up to 1,000 MPN/100 mL which might significantly impair the water uses specially in reuse of reclaimed wastewater. However, their concentration further decreased down to below 2 MPN/100 mL under the solar radiation primarily due to additional disinfection by solar radiation rather than photoreactivation. Samples not disinfected by UV-disinfection also demonstrated substantial decrease of their concentration under solar radiation from about 5,000 MPN/100 mL to less than 30 MPN/100 mL in 24 hours. But direct reuse of effluent without disinfection is not recommended because natural decay by solar radiation may take time and be affected by climatic conditions. The result suggests that photoreactivation of pathogenic microorganisms may not be concerned in agricultural reuse of reclaimed wastewater because solar radiation may provide further disinfection after UV-disinfection.

  • A pilot study was performed to examine the feasibility of the pond system for further polishing of treatment wetland effluent to agricultural reuse of reclaimed water. The constructed wetland and pond system was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent from septic tank of school building was used as an influent to the wetland system. The effluent of the wetland was used as an influent to pond systems. The influent concentrations of total coliform(TC), fecal coliform (FC), and E. coli were about $10^5$MPN/100 ml, and they were reduced to less than 10,000 MPN/100 ml on average after wetland treatments, showing over 95 % removal. And they were further reduced to less than 1,000 MPN/100 ml in average, showing over 85∼93 % removal after pond treatment. Turbidity and SS were improved effectively on average and their pond effluent concentration was about 4.5 NTU and 9.8 mg/L in average, respectively Average $BOD^5$ concentrations were also reduced substantially to 9.3 mg/L with about 83 % removal rate after wetland and pond treatment systems. Nutrients removal was relatively low and removal rate for T-N and T-P was less than 43 and 44%, respectively after wetland and pond treatment. Considering stable performance and effective removal of bacterial indicators as well as other water quality parameters, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, pond system was thought to be an effective and feasible alternative for agricultural reuse of reclaimed water. This paper describes a preliminary result Iron pilot study and further investigations are recommended on the optimum design parameters before full scale application.

  • The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of wastewater reuse for the vegetable farming. The study region, about 250 ha in size, is located on the west coast of Jejudo, Korea. Major agricultural products of the study area are the cabbage, broccoli, garlic and onion. To confirm the feasibility of wastewater reuse, the drought duration and the water requirement analysis were conducted respectively. The average annual precipitation of the study region (1,121 mm) was smaller than that of Jeju island (1,975 mm). The drought duration for a ten-year return period in October through November was more than 20 days. The water requirement for irrigation was calculated by the FAQ Penman-Monteith method which took into account the cultivated crops, planting system, and meteorological conditions of the study region. The water requirement for a ten-year return period was estimated 4.7 mm/day and the water demand for irrigation was $4,584\;m^3/day$. As a result, the irrigation water for the crops was insufficient during their breeding season, especially in October through November. Thus, the result indicated that the study region required the alternative water supply such as wastewater reuse during the non-rainy season. As drought continues to place considerable stress on the availability of fresh water supplies in the study region, irrigation with reclaimed wastewater will play an important role in helping to meet future water demands.

  • The objectives of this study were to monitor and assess the environmental impacts of indirect wastewater reuse on water quality and soil in paddy fields. Yongin monitoring site (YI) irrigated from agricultural reservoir and Osan monitoring site (OS) irrigated with treated wastewater diluted with stream water were selected as control and treatment, respectively. Monitoring results for irrigation water quality showed a significant statistical difference in salinity, exchangeable cation and nutrients. Pond water quality showed a similar tendency with irrigation water except for the decreased difference in nutrients due to the fertilization impact. Soil chemical properties mainly influenced by fertilization activity such as T-N, T-P, and $P_2O_5$ were changed similarly in soil profiles of both monitoring sites, while the properties, EC, Ca, Mg, and Na, mainly effected by irrigation water quality showed a considerable change with time and soil depth in treatment plots. Heavy metal contents in paddy soil of both control and treatment did not exceed the soil contamination warning standards. This study could contribute to suggest the irrigation water quality standards and proper agricultural practices including fertilization for indirect wastewater reuse, although long-term monitoring is needed to get more scientific results.

  • Among 172 wastewater treatment plants, eighty eight plats are found to be qualified for potential wastewater resources applicable to agricultural irrigation. The total effluent capacities are 4,042 thousand tonnes per day, which may be used to irrigated paddy fields of $156\;km^2$. Preliminary surveys have been made to inquire farmers and water managers about their preference for wastewater reuse. All of them expressed their willingness to accept the wastewater reuse. The surveyed water managers suggested microbiological treatments be made and exclusive prove for safety of wastewater irrigation be prerequisite to the practices. Further surveys with experts and water managers throughout the nation are needed before any conclusions are made.

  • This paper presents a recent finding from the progressed research efforts on the application for wastewater reclamation and reuse for agricultural uses. Reclaimed effluents from the Suwon municipal sewer treatment plant has been used to irrigate paddy rice at experimental plots. Three levels of reclamation treatments, filtration, disinfection, and the both, and one treatment to apply heavily polluted stream flow are compared to the control which uses groundwater for irrigation. The rice growth indicated by plant height and tiller number, and the yields were compared statistically among the five treatments. The results showed that the rice yields from polluted stream were greatest, and the control showed the lowest yields. And the first year experiment indicated that the agricultural reuse is promising.
