  • Objective: We compared the prevalence of injury and poisoning in the agricultural and fishery population with that of the general population. Methods: The national health insurance data and agricultufor this study. The age-adjusted standardized morbidity ratio was used to compare the prevalence of all injuries and poisonings of the agricultural and fishery population with that of the general population for the year 2002, as well as the prevalence of certain injuries and poisonings common to the agricultural and fishery population. The age-adjusted standardized morbidity ratio and 95% confidence intervals were attained by using the general population as the standard population group. Results: The age-adjusted standardized morbidity ratio of total injuries and poisonings was significantly high in the agriculture and fishery population. The standardized morbidity ratio was 137.6 in the male agriculture and fishery population and 123.3 in the female agriculture and fishery population. In terms of injuries and poisonings common to the agriculture and fishery population, the age-adjusted standardized morbidity ratio was significantly high regarding the dislocations and strains of lumbar spine/pelvis, shoulder and neck, the fracture of rib/thoracic spine/sternum and pesticide poisoning. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of injury/poisoning was significantly higher in the agriculture and fishery population than in the general population. Various forms of research should be conducted on the injuries of the agriculture and fishery population in the future. In order to compare the differences in the prevalence rates of injuries according to time and region, standard definitions of injuries and occupation related injuries are required.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the awareness of work-related disease prevention of farmers. Method: As a research method, a qualitative focus group interview was conducted in 18 participants. Results: Prevention and management services for work-related diseases of farmers mostly are based on research from other fields and so are not highly effective because their content is not relevant to agricultural work. It has been suggested that such program designers be required to have some appropriate related knowledge, and that incentives and a certification system for participation in such education be established. To analyze work-related diseases of farmers, fields of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation should be created. They demanded the designation of hospitals and the actualization of compensation for farmers' safety insurance. The work-related diseases to address were include musculoskeletal diseases, pesticide poisoning-related diseases (cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease), psychiatric diseases such as depression, and allergic diseases. However, this must have been the result of the harmful factors they felt during agricultural work. And for farmer patients diagnosed with work-related diseases, it was said to strengthen farmer safety insurance. Conclusion: In order to increase the safely and health effects of agricultural work, it is necessary to prevent and manage work-related diseases of farmers. Projects should be developed in consideration of cultural and economic barriers of farmers and the characteristics of the work.

  • Although the rate of women farmer's participation in agricultural activities have been increased upto 52.7 % as of year 2003, Korean society has not fully recognized their roles in rural society. According to the agricultural basic law, most of rural women were engaged in agriculture as full time job, however, only about 11% of them could have supporting evidence of themselves as farmer having legal right. If women farmers faced some unexpected things such as a traffic accident, insurance company would not reward them as farmers unless they provide written proof of their job as farm worker or farm owner. Based on lawyer's legal advice, the authors developed a diary called "Saenghwalilji", a daily diary based on their time use and bookkeeping to prove the fact of their contribution to income generation of the farm. After examination of the diary, 18 persons out of 29 volunteers kept two types of dairy for the period of two weeks, and they reported it was very useful. Finally the better one of two was selected after reflecting the suggestions from the respondents. The "Saenghwalilji", will be very useful proof of women farmer's contribution to income, at the same time improving their farm management through better use of daily life time.

  • Drone and sensor technologies are enabling digitalization of agricultural crop's growth information and accelerating the development of the precision agriculture. These technologies could be able to assess damage of crops when natural disaster occurs, and contribute to the scientification of the crop insurance assessment method, which is being conducted through field survey. This study was aimed to calculate lodged damage rate from the vegetation indices extracted by drone based RGB images for soybean. Support Vector Classifier (SVC) models were considered by adding vegetation indices to the Crop Surface Model (CSM) based lodged damage rate. Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) and Green Red Vegetation Index (GRVI) based lodged damage rate classification were shown the highest accuracy score as 0.709 and 0.705 each. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that drone based RGB images can be used as a useful tool for estimating the rate of lodged damage. The result acquired from this study can be used to the satellite imagery like Sentinel-2 and RapidEye when the damages from the natural disasters occurred.

  • The medical insurance system has been adopted in 1989. Since then, the utilization of medical care services has increased rapidly. It appears that the medical institution needs more nursing manpower such as nurses and nurse aides to meet an increased demand for medical care for the residents. However, the medical care clinics run by a medical practitioners has a more shortage of nursing manpower than hospitals. The purpose of this survey was to analyze the current employment status and to obtain an opinion on the improvement of utilization such as recruitment and retention of nursing manpower. The questionnaire sent to the private physician and the response rate was 28.7% ; 87 out of 300 physicians. 82.6% of the respondents employed nurses aides rather than nurses and an average number of employees per clinic was 2.5 persons. Most physicians had difficulties in recruiting nursing manpower. It took more than one month for replacement on average, therefore, they were suffering from giving good continual care for the patient and also high resignation of nursing personnel. The low wage, long working hours, hard work and lack of incentives are the biggest reasons for the difficulty in recruiting and retaining of the nursing personnel obtained for the clinics survey. The above mentioned problems would be solved in the near future by changing those difficulties. In the meantime, the private physicians are marking an effort to retain the nursing personnel by keeping a relationship of the private physician's cooperatives.

This study attempts, therefore, to initiate a comprehensive proposal of rural health care delivery system. The proposal is constructed three parts, problem of health care system, medical cost, medical education system. The proposal consist of the following components: I. The health care system 1. health sub-center is required to be locate in "Myun" the basis administrative unit of local government for delivering primary health care. But, in the viewpoint of medical economics, the primary health care is operated cautiously. 2. Health center is desirable to provide health services in coordinating the health sub-center and other private health institution. 3. The secondary health care is performed in regional combination hospitals, and the attitude that doctors accomodate this system is required. II. The medical cost, Insurance In the expenditure of medical care, the method of a third person's payment is required absolutely. III. The medical education system. 1. The medical education system (process) is changed from the medical education to regional doctor education. 2 In the nurse education system. nursing technical high school is resurrected.

  • In Korea, the position of health among the sectors of everyday life lies behind the others. The inhabitants don't consider health so important and immediate as food and shelter. Primarily, it seemed more important for them to eat something and to educate their children than to secure health. Under this situations we must take into consideration their health status and health problems in terms of the social system. Health cannot be maintaned by itself. It inter acts with a set of social conditions such as income, knowledge about health, health institution, health insurance, social class, culture and etc. But the community health projects which have carried out in Korea since the beginning of 1970s focused mainly on the medical care and medical delivery itself regardless the background of health care. According to the existing results of socio-epidemiological and medico-sociological researches, a set of social conditions has a great effect on the inhabitants' health status and health care. So, such conditions will be considered primarily in Korea University Health Project. This paper is prepared as a preliminary step for such a program. In this paper we mainly inquired into the relationship between health and the attitudes of inhabitants.

  • When an agricultural soil dam collapses, the extent of inundation and the rate of diffusion vary depending on where the collapse occurs in the dam body. In this study, a dam collapse scenario was established and a two-dimensional numerical model FLO-2D was used to closely examine the inundation pattern of the downstream residential area according to the dam collapse point. The results were presented as a flood risk map showing the changes and patterns of the extent of inundation spread. The flood level and the time to reach the maximum water level vary depending on the point of collapse, and the inundation of the downstream area proceeds rapidly in the order of the midpoint, left point, and right point collapse. In the left collapse point, the submergence appeared about 0.5 hour slower than the middle point, and the right collapse point appeared about 1 hour slower than the middle point. Since the relative damage pattern is different depending on the dam collapse point, insurance and disaster countermeasures will have to be established differently.
