Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between employment transitions and suicide ideation among the echo generation. Methods: This study used survey data from the 2008 and 2010 Seoul Welfare Panel Study (Wave I, II). The sample population was restricted to the echo generation aged between18 and 31, and the total of 882 samples were included in the final dataset. Employment transitions were categorized into four groups. The groups were defined as 'employed-employed', 'unemployed-employed', 'employed-unemployed', and 'unemployed-unemployed'. We used logistic regression to find out the association between employment transitions and suicide ideation among the echo generation. Results: 'Employed-unemployed' and 'unemployed-unemployed' groups were likely to have an association with depression (odds ratio [OR], 1.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46 to 1.51; OR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.56 to 1.59) accordingly. 'Unemployed-unemployed' group also was related to suicide ideation (OR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.36 to 1.42). Interestingly, 'unemployed-employed' group showed a strong association with suicide ideation among the echo generation (OR, 3.85; 95% CI, 3.75 to 3.95). Conclusion: Experience in unemployment increases the risk of depression and suicide ideation. Moreover, the precarious job also increases the risk of suicide ideation.
In this paper, a mathematical model of learning curve is proposed to study the fi- nger's reaction time. The model is a logarithmic linear type which represents a lear- ning curve appropriately, and parameters are estimated by the linear. The learning coefficient and percentage of a reaction time can easily computed in the mathematical model. This quantitative approach provieds an important information to be used fot the working capqbility qualification of re-employment as well as the adaptability estimation of aged workers.
The Purpose of this study are to examine the middle-age and old worker's employment rates by age and gender at economic depression and recovery periods after the economic crisis, to identify the main 3causes of the change of the middle-age and old worker's employment rates between two periods, and to analyze whether the determinants affecting the middle-age and old worker's employment may be different by age and gender. For this study, The Annual Korean Labor Panel data(from 1st to 7th) are used. The results show that the employment rates are increased in the economic recovery period, and the difference between male and female employment rates decrease as ages go up. As we predicted, the determinants affecting the middle-age and old worker's employment are different by age and gender. For example, the existence of partner has positive effect on the male employment, but negative effect on female employment. The increases of the middle and old age worker's employment rates in the recovery period are mainly caused by the extension of the individualism(that is, the increases of the middle and upper class workers' employment), rather than the increases of the poor workers' employment rates due to the poverty(that is, the increases of the lower and poor class workers' employment). In the recovery period, comparing to the economic depression periods, the middle-age and old workers in the high class were likely to remain his(her) a good job while those in lower class are more difficult to get a job. This results show that the polarization of middle-age and old worker's employment has been appeared in the recovery periods(after 2001).
This study aims to overcome the limitations of prior studies that have failed to take into account the impact of psycho-social factors on the employment of people with disabilities as well as the differences in employment by life stage. This study employs a research model that includes psycho-social factors along with human capital to examine how the determinants of employment differ for the disabled by life stage. The analysis in this study takes the form of logistic regression, using data from the fifth wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Survey. Analysis results show that the employment probability of young people with disabilities is significantly associated with their experience of discrimination, with their chance of employment decreasing when they have more experience of discrimination. Middle-aged people with disabilities are more likely to be employed when they have a lower level of education, a better health condition and a higher level of labor ability. For the disabled elderly, their labor ability is the only factor affecting their possibility of employment; they have a higher chance of getting a job when they have a higher level of labor ability.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that influence middle-aged people's retirement planning and financial preparation for old age. The data was derived from "the National Survey of Families 2015". The samples included 1,462 people from 40 to 64 years of age. The findings from the analysis showed that the level of retirement planning was significantly associated with gender, age, education level, employment status, monthly family income, monthly expenditure on spending to support parents, and perceived household economic condition. When the samples were divided by sex, the results showed that the perceived household economic condition was the most significant factor for both men and women's level of retirement planning. Age and education level were the significant factors for women's level of retirement planning but not for men's. Logistic regression was used to analyze whether middle-aged people made financial preparation for old age. For the whole sample, whether or not a person was a regular employee, monthly family income, monthly expenditure on supporting parents, perceived household economic condition, and retirement planning were significant variables in determining financial preparation. For men, whether or not a person was a regular employee, monthly family income, perceived household economic condition, and retirement planning were significant factors, for women whether or not a person was a regular employee, and retirement planning were the significant factors in determining financial preparation. The results implied that retirement planning is needed for middle-aged people to prepare for old age financially while the financial preparation should differ depending on sex.
The recent experience about self-employment shows three main trends: first, its share out of the total workers has steadily increased, recording 37.6% in 2001, implying its prevalence and importance; second, its share out of male workers has caught up female workers', implying its importance to males as well as females; and finally, during the recent Economic Crisis when there was mass layoff and large scale bankruptcy, its share rapidly increased, reflecting its role of a buffer to economic fluctuation. However, there have been few studies on self-employment, mainly focusing on what makes someone choose it as an alternative to being employed. This study analyzes the determinants of the duration to terminate self-employment, by applying the proportional hazard model to the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey(KLIPS) by the Korea Labor Institute. The KLIPS started the first wave in 1998 with the 5,000 household sample (and about 12,000 individual sample of household members aged 15 and more). In this study, the first four waves are used for analysis. The average duration of 5,357 spells of self-employment is 130 months. It shows slight difference between males(124 months) and females(138 months) while it widely ranges over industries (296 months for agriculture industry while 50 months for restaurant and hotel industry). Estimates of the proportional hazard model of the self-employment duration show that females are more likely to terminate self-employment while it is not statistically significant. The effect of age at starting self-employment on the hazard shows the inverse V-shape, which implies that, until a certain age(47 years), the hazard become higher as aging while, since then, it become lower as aging. The level of education has a positive effect on the hazard, implying that more education is related to the higher probability to be employed. The measures of economic performances, annual sales and earnings, are positively related to continuing self-employment while hardship at the start of self-employment measured by several ways has a negative effect. Training before opening business has a positive effect on keeping on self-employment and its effects are different over its providers, significantly positive for public providers while insignificant for private providers. More and further research on self-employment is urgent in the rapidly ageing society. To help workers to be self-employed, more public assistance is necessary for education, training, financing, marketing, management, and human resource management in order to make the olders consider self-employment as a good alternative rather than an inevitable one.
Objectives : Job insecurity, such as non-standard work, is reported to have an adverse impact on health, regardless of health behaviors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between non-standard employment and health in Korea. Methods : We analyzed a representative weighted sample, which consisted of 2,112 men and 1,237 women, aged 15-64, from the 1998 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Non-standard employment included part-time permanent, short time temporary and daily workers. Self-reported health was used as a health indicator. Results : This study indicated that women were more likely to report poorer health than men with standard jobs. Of all employees, 20.3% were female manual workers. After adjusting for potential confounders, such as age, education, equivalent income, marital, social and self-reported economic status and health behavior factors, nonstandard employment was found to be significantly associated with poor health among female manual workers (OR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.24 to 2.79). No significant association was found in other working groups Conclusions : Among female manual workers, nonstandard employees reported significantly poorer health compared with standard workers. This result raises concern as there are increasing numbers of non-standard workers, particularly females.
Using matching and difference-in-differences estimation method, this study estimates causal effects of health shocks on employment and income of full-time workers aged 40-55. Acute hospital admissions lower significantly the employment probability and earnings. The changes in employment and earnings persist up to three years after the health shock. The economic impacts of health shocks vary by socioeconomic status and job characteristics among individuals. Irregular workers are more likely to leave their jobs after health shocks than regular workers. Among irregular workers, the probability of leaving labor market after health shock decreases with the size of the firm.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze basic data on socio - demographic characteristics, occupational careers, and desire for employment of job seekers in their Fifties and Sixties using a portal site. Methods: For this research, secondary data were collected by the researcher from 704 job seekers and were statistically analyzed using the SPSS package. Results: The results of the analysis are as follows: Most job seekers want a job that suits their competence and career trajectory, but the reality is that as their age increases, jobs suitable for those in their fifties and sixties are hard to find; thus these job seekers accept simple labor or functional jobs. Conclusions: Differences were found in work conditions such as occupation level, job position, total career years, desired employment type, and expected salary depending on socio - demographic variables. Consequently, improvements should be made for various job searching paths for older adults as well as increasing the accessibility of job searching information.
Background: Despite a growing number of investigations exploring the health problems in precarious workers, there is still a paucity of studies investigating workplace violence in workers with multi-party employment arrangements (WMPEAs). This study was aimed at comparing the prevalence of workplace violence between non-WMPEA and WMPEA. Methods: The 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey data were used. The study subjects were employees aged 20-74, with 26,239 non-WMPEA and 1,556 WMPEA. WMPEA included temporary agency workers and workers providing outsourced services. Workplace violence including verbal abuse, unwanted sexual attention, threats, and humiliating behaviors were used as outcome variables. The odds ratios of risk of workplace violence were calculated using multiple logistic regression. Results: The age-standardized prevalence of workplace violence was significantly higher among WMPEA. After adjusting for all covariates, the risk of workplace violence among WMPEA was still significant (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.5-2.2) compared with non-WMPEA. The odds ratio of workplace violence among female WMPEA was 1.99 (95% CI 1.53-2.59), which is higher than that of male WMPEA (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.18-1.96). Conclusion: We found that WMPEA were exposed to higher risk of workplace violence. Discrimination against WMPEA in the working environment and management policy need to be corrected. It is also necessary to identify the risk factors of workplace violence in WMPEA and to make efforts to prevent violence.
