Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe quality of life (QOL) in Korean school-age children by identifying dimensions and attributes of QOL from the child's point of view. Method: In-depth interviews with focus questions were used for the study. Twelve children, aged 10 to 13 years, were recruited from Seoul and rural areas. The interviews were audio-taped and transcribed before content analysis. The data were analyzed for themes and attributes. The researchers read the data together and discussed their conclusions until a consensus was reached. Results: Eight dimensions, 57 subdimensions and 101atttributes were identified for QOL in school-age children. The eight dimensions of QOL were physical, social, emotional, learning, leisure, family, self-value, and material aspects. Conclusion: The study results can be utilized in developing reliable instruments to measure quality of life specific to school-age children. It is proposed that a consistent and unified policy should be established by school, family, and community for the purpose of improving the QOL of school-age children.
This study was performed to measure the various dimensions of the hand for Korean adults. Three hundred and eighteen males and two hundred and sixty females, age ranged 18 to 60, participated in this study. Thirty-five dimensions were selected to measure. Subjects were divided into three age groups, 18 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 to 60, for each sex. The data were analyzed to see the differences between the age groups and sex by using SAS program. The results showed that the measurements related to breadth and thickness tended to increase as the age increased. Wrist breadth, index finger breadth(distal), index finger breadth(proximal), thumb breadth, and index finger thickness(proximal) increased as the age increased for both males and females (p<0.05). However, the measurements related to length tended to increase as the age decreased. The relationship between the parts that are length related showed high correlation. Hand length showed high correlation with palm length, middle finger length and index finger length. Males' were significantly greater than females' in every dimension (p<0.05). Also, the results of this study were compared with the data of Japanese and U.S. army. The results of this study can be used to design the hand related products.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on health related quality of life in middle age. Methods: Data were as collected by self-reported questionnaires from 303 middle age adults. Data analysis was done using SPSS/WIN 17.0 program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The average score of health related quality of life was $79.50{\pm}0.40$. Health related quality of life was statistically significant differences according to gender, education, economic status and disease. The health related quality of life was significantly correlated with fatigue, depression, stress, social support, somatic attribution, psychological attribution, normalizing attribution and type D personality. The major factors that affect health related quality of life in middle age were stress, fatigue, type D personality and normalizing attribution, which explained 51.3% of health related quality of life. Conclusion: The findings can provide the basis for the development of nursing interventions to improve health related quality of life. Furthermore, more studies are needed to explore variables that influence on the health related quality of life in middle age.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the dietary habits by age groups, based on the nutrition counseling data of medical health examination. The subjects were 5,811 adults(3,258 males and 2,553 females) who took comprehensive medical test in Gyeonggi area, and they were evaluated from January 1 to December 31 in 2005. Survey samples were divided by age groups 30>, $30{\sim}39,\;40{\sim}49,\;50{\sim}59,\;60{\sim}69,\;70{\leq}years$. The subjects were composed of 56.1% male and 43.9% female. The results showed that the dietary habits of $50{\sim}59$ group were relatively good. On the other hand, in 30>, $30{\sim}39\;and\;40{\sim}49$ age groups, since they had irregular meals and high ratio of skipping breakfast. and they had meals out frequently, nutritional unbalance in these age groups was expected for the future. Therefore the correct nutritional facts should be taught to them so that they have a healthy dietary habit.
SELENE, a Japanese lunar mission, has been launched this year. There are large volumes of images that were already archived and will be archived by missions such as SELENE. Automatic image analysis systems, which extract useful information from large amounts of data, are now required. The authors propose Lunar Surface GIS, which archives lunar surface information collected by lunar orbiting spacecraft and conducts geological analysis automatically. This system includes automatic crater detection, automatic age determination, and lava thickness estimation methods. In this paper, methods for automatically determining the age and estimating the lava thickness of lunar mare are described. The lunar surface age was determined by analyzing data of detected crater size and number using a crater chronology method. Lava thickness was estimated by the extent of the overlying material around the crater as well as the composition of underlying terrain units. In this result, the age map at Mare Crisium suggests the mare had been formed 3.0-3.7 b.y. ago. The lava thickness result suggests the thickest part of the mare is distributed around the center of the mare. The Lunar Surface GIS can produce a geological map, age map, and mare lava thickness map, for example.
This study investigates the association between chronic health conditions (CHD) and depression with a focus on the mediating effect of financial strain. We tested if age makes any difference in the effect of CHD and financial strain on depression. The data comes from the 2006 Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) collected by the Institute of Korean Labor Research. The sample consisted of information from 8,961 individuals ages 45-79. Separate analyses were done for middle-age (45-64) and older-adult groups (65-79). There were significant financial portfolio differences among CHD patients and non-CHD, for both age groups, that may constitute the impact of a health event on financial wellbeing; in addition, the associations of CHD on depressive symptoms were different by age groups. The mediating effect of financial wellbeing on the association between CHD and depressive symptoms was verified; in addition, the role of financial wellbeing on the association was especially strong for the older-adult group. The effect of CHD on depression was contingent on the amount of net assets and annual personal income. Implications are discussed based on the findings.
The purpose of this study was to identify the physical characteristics of early adolescent girls by age. A total of 529 girls aged between 10 and 14 were measured and data were collected from 42 anthropometric and 41 photographic measurements per a person. SAS 8.1 was used in data analysis including means, standard deviations, t-test, Duncan test and frequency analysis. The results of this study are as follows. Most items related to height and length increased significantly at the age of $10\sim11$ and the growth slowed down at the age of $13\sim14$. As for items related to circumference, the growth rate was high at the age of $11\sim12$, and gradually slowed down afterward. Out of circumference items, hip circumference showed the highest growth rate. As for items related to thickness and width, thickness-related items grew quickly at the age of $10\sim12$, and among which bust thickness showed the highest growth rate. As for drop, the difference between hip circumference and waist circumference was most remarkable, but the difference between hip circumference and bust circumference was not large. The largest number of subjects had their menarche during the age of $11\sim12$ and, after menarche, their horizontal growth became active.
We applied Sm-Nd isotopic system to so-called amphibolites occurring within the Ogcheon group to provide constraints on the age of the metasedimentary rocks and to characterize tectonic environment of basaltic magmatism. An internal mineral isochron age of $677{\pm}91Ma({\sigma})$ was obtained from a coarse-grained, intrusive, amphibolite near Mungyeong. Considering previous studies on the age of the Ogcheon group, we interpret that the isochron represents either early metamorphic or emplacement age. The depositional age of the metasedimentary rocks intruded by the amphibolite would be prior to late Proterozoic. The present study and Cambro-Ordovician fossil evidences of previous workers suggest that both Precambrian and Phanerozoic rocks are present in the Ogcheon group. Positive ${\varepsilon}$ Nd values(+2.4 to +3.5) of four whole rocks indicate mantle origin for the amphibolite. These isotopic data, along with published immobile trace element data of Cluzel et al.(1989), strongly suggest that parental rocks of the amphibolite formed in an intraplate environment rather than in island arc or midocean ridge. The age and tectonic environment of amphibolites in the Ogcheon belt suggest that the basaltic magmatism may be related to the late Proterozoic break-up of a presumed supercontinent, but not to the Triassic(?) collision between North and South China continents.
PURPOSE: This study examined the prevalence and specific risk factors in males aged 40-49 years with the coexistence of age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and obesity (CALSMO). METHODS: The current study analyzed the data obtained from a cross-sectional study involving a sample of 1,218 men who resided in the community and fell within the age range of 40 to 49 years. Multiple risk factors were examined: age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, smoking and drinking habits, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and triglyceride and cholesterol levels. All data were analyzed via complex sampling analysis. RESULTS: The coexistence of age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and obesity in males was 2.94% (95% CI: 2.06-4.17). The clinical risk factors were low height, high weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and fast glucose (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The study identifies the prevalence and risk factors for CALSMO among adults in the community. These findings contribute to the existing literature on CALSMO and highlight potential risk factors associated with CALSMO development in males aged 40-49 years.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether emotionality at age three predicts early school-age media overdependence and to examine the potential mediating role of internalizing behavior problems in children. Methods: This study employed data from the 4th and 10th waves of the Panel Study of Korea Children, comprising a sample of 1,270 children. Assessments of emotionality (4th wave), media overdependence (10th wave), and internalizing behavior problems (10th wave) were conducted. Data analysis utilized SPSS and the Process Macro. Results: At age 3, heightened emotionality was found to directly contribute to an increased tendency for media overdependence in early school age. Internalizing behavior problems played a significant mediating role in the relationship between emotionality and media overdependence. Conclusion/Implications: This study validated a significant longitudinal connection between emotionality and the inclination to excessively rely on media, highlighting the role of internalization behavior problems in this relationship. It is essential to provide focused attention, especially to children displaying heightened emotionality in early childhood, in order to proactively prevent internalization behavior problems and the undue dependence on media.
