Investigation of thorium separation from rare-earth extraction residue via electrosorption with carbon based electrode toward reducing waste volume

  • Rare-earth (RE) industries generate a massive amount of radioactive residue containing high thorium concentrations. Due to the fact that thorium is considered a non-economic element, large volume of these RE processed residues are commonly disposed of without treatment. It is essential to study an appropriate treatment that could reduce the volume of waste for final disposition. To this end, this research investigates the applicability of carbon-based adsorbent in separating thorium from aqueous phase sulphate is obtained from the cracking and leaching process of solid rare-earth by-product residue. Adsorption of thorium from the aqueous phase sulphate by carbon-based electrodes was investigated through electrosorption experiments conducted at a duration of 180 minutes with a positive potential variable range of +0.2V to +0.6V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Through this research, the specific capacity obtained was equivalent to 1.0 to 5.14 mg-Th/g-Carbon. Furthermore, electrosorption of thorium ions from aqueous phase sulphate is found to be most favorable at a higher positive potential of +0.6V (vs. Ag/AgCl). This study's findings elucidate the removal of thorium from the rare-earth residue by carbon-based electrodes and simultaneously its potential to reduce disposal waste of untreated residue.

Polarographic Behavior of Oxovanadium (IV) Complex of Mercaptopyridine N-Oxide

  • The redox properties of 2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide (mpno) and its oxovanadium complex, $VO (mpno)_2$ have been studied by the use of polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The radical anion of mpno is generated in acetone and is adsorbed to the electrode to form an adsorption wave at -0.21 V vs Ag/AgCl electrode. The normal wave appeared at -0.50 V is attributed to the formation of radical anion. The $VO (mpno)_2$ exhibits one oxidation wave at +0.57 V, and two reduction waves at -1.07 V and -1.76 V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode; the oxidation is fully reversible one-electron process ($VO (mpno)_2\;{\leftrightarrow}\;VO(mpno)_2^+ + e).$ The reduction wave at -1.07 V is quasireversible and is arised from the formation of $VO (mpno)_2^-.$ The second reduction wave at -1.76 V is irreversible and this reduction process consists of two one-electron steps. The sulfur containing ligands seem to enhance the stability of lower oxidation state of vanadium while the oxygen or nitrogen donor of the ligands stabilize the higher oxidation state of vanadium when comparisons are made among several oxovanadium complexes.

  • Perfluorinated sulfonated polymer-ethylenediamine(nafion-en)이 수식된 유리탄소전극을 이용하여 Cu(II) 이온을 정량하였다. 이 수식전극의 en은 Cu(II) 이온과 $[Cu(en)_2]^{+2}$의 착물을 형성한다. Nafion-en이 수식된 유리탄소전극에서 시차펄스전압전류법에 의한 Cu(II) 이온의 환원봉우리전위는 -0.4402V(${\pm}0.0050V$) (vs. Ag/AgCl)에서 측정되었고, 측정범위는 $1.0{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-4}M$, 검출한계(3s)는 $1.96{\times}10^{-6}M$이었다.

Photocatalytic performance of graphene/Ag/TiO2 hybrid nanocomposites

  • To improve photocatalytic efficiency, graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube catalyst was synthesized, and its surface characteristics and photocatalytic activity investigated. For deposition of Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes, a polymer compound containing CH3COOAg/poly(L-lactide) was utilized, and the silver particles were precipitated by reducing the silver ions during the annealing process. Graphene deposition on the Ag/TiO2 nanotubes was achieved using an electrophoretic deposition process. Based on the dye degradation results, it was determined that the photocatalytic efficiency was significantly affected by deposition of silver particles and graphene on the TiO2 catalyst. Highly efficient destruction of the dye was obtained with the new graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube photocatalyst. This may be attributed to a synergistic effect of the graphene and Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes.

  • The transport of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was investigated through a column packed with sand. A series of column experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of ionic strength (IS), pH, electrolyte type and clay mineral on mobility of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs). The deposition of PVP-AgNPs was increased with increasing solution ionic strength and decreasing pH. Furthermore, the depositon of PVP-AgNPs was affected by the electrolyte type (NaCl vs. NaNO3) and was shown to be greater at NaNO3 solution. Also, the transport of PVP-AgNPs was greatly increased after the pre-deposition of clay particles on sand. Our results suggest that various environmental factors can influence the mobility of PVP-AgNPs in soil-groundwater systems and should be carefully considered in assessing their environmental risks.

시차 펄스 벗김전압전류법을 이용한 Sodium Alginate의 미량분석 연구 (Microanalytical Study of Sodium Alginate by Differential Pulse Stripping Voltammetry)

  • 본 실험에서는 고분자 상태의 Sodium Alginate를 시차펄스 전압전류법을 이용하여 최적의 분석조전을 조사 연구하였고, 먼저 고분자 상태인 Sodium Alginate를 순환전압전류법과 IR로 환원 작용기를 확인하였다. 수은방울크기 (medium size), 수집시간(60초), 수집 전위 (-0.20V vs Ag/AgCl), 주사속도(100mV/sec), 지지전해질(0.10M $NaClO_4$, pH 6,8)의 선택 둥 최적의 분석조전을 정하였다. 그리고 고분자 상태인 Sodium Alginate와 고분자 상태의 Sodium Alginate를 $100^{\circ}C$ 산조건하에서 가수분해하여 저분자화시켰을 때, 전류봉우리 높이 변화를 비교 분석하였다. 위와 같은 최적조건에서 Sodium Alginate를 정량분석해 본 결과 고분자 상태의 검정곡선은 0.50ppm으로부터 4.0ppm익 범위에서, 저분자일 때는 0.05ppm에서 0.24ppm의 범위에서 선형적이었다.

인지질 화합물의 나노 Langmuir-Blodgett막의 전기화학적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Electrochemical Characteristics of Langmuir-Blodgett Nano-Films of Phospholipid Compound)

  • 우리는 순환전압전류법에 의한 LB 필름에 대한 전기화학적 특성을 조사하였다. 인지질 화합물은 ITO glass에 Langmuir-Blodgett법을 사용하여 제막하였다. 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 및 2.0 N $NaClO_4$ 용액에서 3 전극 시스템 (Ag/AgCl 기준전극, 백금선 카운터 전극 및 LB 필름이 코팅된 ITO 작업전극)으로 순환전압전류법을 사용하여 전기화학적 측정을 시도하였다. 측정 범위는 연속적으로 1650 mV로 산화시키고, 초기전위인 -1350 mV로 환원시켰다. 그 결과, 인지질 화합물의 LB 필름은 순환전압전류도표로부터 오직 산화전류로 인한 비가역공정으로 나타났다. LB 필름의 확산계수(D) 효과는 인지질 화합물 양의 증가로 인하여 감소하였다.

  • 0.1M LiCl의 ethanol 용액에서 ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibenzyl N-benzylidene L-aspartate의 전기화학적 환원을 direct current, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry 그리고 controlled potential coulometry 방법으로 연구하였다. ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibenzyl N-benzylidene L-aspartate의 환원과정은 1단계(-0.92 volts vs. Ag-AgCl)에서 양성자 첨가와 2전자이동에 의한 완전 비가역의 CEC 혹은 CE 반응기구로 진행되었으며 ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibenzyl N-benzyl L-aspartate가 생성되었다. 계면활성제가 포함된 용액에서 polarography 환원파는 전체적으로 약간 억제되었으며 Triton X-100의 농도가 진해질수록 비가역성을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 생성물 분석과 pH 변화에 따른 전극환원과정에 대한 고찰로 전기화학적 반응기구를 제안하였다.

  • Degradation characteristics of cathodoluminescence (CL) of ZnS:Ag,Cl phosphor were investigated with measurements of CL and photoluminescence (PL). Phosphoric acid treatment was performed to phosphor particles in order to improve CL degradation of phosphor screen that occurred during panel sealing process, and we will discuss mechanisms of degradation and improvement of luminescence mainly with help of AES (auger electron spectroscopy) analysis.

廢 PCBs부터 귀금속(Au, Ag 등)의 선택적 침출공정 (Selective Leaching Process of Precious Metals (Au, Ag, etc.) from Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs))

  • 본 연구는 폐컴퓨터 인쇄회로기판으로부터 Au와 Ag 및 유가금속을 회수하기 위해 수행하였다. 시료는 슈레더를 사용하여 1 mm이하 입자로 분쇄한 후 정전선별하여 약 70%의 부도체를 분리제거하고, 회수된 30%의 도체는 자력선별에 사용하였다. 자력선별에 의해 42%의 자성체는 제거되고 58%의 비자성체를 유가물 침출 원료로 사용하였으며, 비자성체의 Au및 Ag의 함량은 각각 0.227mg/g, 0.697 mg/g 이였다. 회수된 물질로부터 Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Al를 침출분리하기 위해 황산과 과산화수소수를 혼합한 침출용매를 사용하였다. 2.0M 황산, 0.2M과산화수소수, 반응온도 $85^{\circ}C$에서 95%이상의 Cu, 로n, Fe, Ni, Al를 침출 할 수 있었으며, Au와 Ag는 침출되지 않았다. 반면에 황산침출 후 잔사로부터 Au, Ag의 선택적인 침출을 위해 혼합용매(0.2M(NH$_4$)$_2$S$_2$O$_3$, 0.02M $CusO_4$,0.4M NH$_4$OH)를 사용하였을 때 Ag는 100%, Au는 95%이상 침출하였다 또한 최종 잔사로부터 Pb침출은 NaCl용액을, Sn침출은 황산용액을 사용하였으며 침출율은 각각 95%, 98%를 나타냈다.
