A fundamental study in cooling and solidification process focused on ice storage was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation in the cooling and freezing processes with supercooling in a space between double cylinders. When water was cooled under the freezing point by a cooling wall in a cavity, solidification was not started at once, but a subcooled region was formed near the wall. Especially, when the cooling rate was low, subcooled region extended to a wide area. However, after a few minutes, supercooling is released by some triggers. Dendritic ice is suddenly formed within a subcooled region, and a dense ice layer begins to be developed from the cooling wall. Due to the difficulties, most previous studies on solidification process with numerical methods had not treated the supercooling phenomena, i.e. the case considering only the growth of dense ice. In this study, natural convection and ice formation considering existence of supercooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically with using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. The results of numerical analysis were well compared with the experimental results.
This study deals with the characteristic of refrigerant for heat-treatment deformation control of SM45C steel. The control of heat-treatment deformation must need the progress of production parts for a landing gear. Most of the deformation is occurred on unequal cooling. The unequal cooling is occurred by a property of quenching refrigeration. When a heated metal is deposited in the refrigeration, the cooling speed is so slow in early period of cooling because of occurring a steam-curtain. After more cooling, the steam-curtain is destroyed. In this progress, the cooling speed is very fast. The object of this study is to control the deformation of heat-treatment for landing gear by improving the conditions of quenching. The cooling curves and cooling rates of water, oil and polymer solution are obtained and illustrated. From the characteristics of the quenching refrigerant, the effects of heat-treatments on thermal deformation and fatigue strength are also investigated.
The interfacial microstructure and bond strength were examined for WC-Co/Cu/SM45C steel join using a nickel-plated copper in vacuum at 1323K for 0.6ks∼3.6ks. After bonding, microstructure in bonding interface was observed by OM(Optical Microscopy), SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EPMA(Eelectron Probe Micro Analyzer). The oil cooling was carried out at 353K, the cooling rate in air and furnace was 22K/s and 4.4K/s. respectively. It was found that dendritic widths increased with the content of cobalt and bonding times at 1323K. As a whole, bond strength values at the same bonding condition decreased in this order: WC-13wt.%Co/SM45Csteel. WC-8wt.%Co/SM45Csteel and WC-4wt.%Co/SM45Csteel. The bond strength of WC-13wt.%Co/S45C steel joint in oil cooling was 273MPa. This value was greatly higher than those of 125MPa in furnace cooling and 93MPa in air cooling at 1323K for 0.6ks. The bond strength values were found to be closely associated with the content of cobalt in WC-Co and cooling rate.
Researchers have recently begun to study hot stamping processes to shorten the mold cooling time and improve productivity. These publications explain that the mold cooling time can be reduced by using a curved cooling channel, where the mold surface is processed to a uniform depth, instead of a straight cooling channel that uses the conventional gun drilling machine. This study investigates the characteristics of the front pillar of an automobile after using a mold with a curved cooling channel. To analyze the change in properties, we used a 1.6 mm boron steel blank and heated the prototype at $930^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. Next, we formed the prototype with a load of about 500 tons while varying the mold cooling time between 1 and 10 seconds. We subjected each prototype specimen to a tensile strength test, a hardness test, and a tissue surface observation.
The 9Cr-1Mo ferritic-martensitic ODS steel is a promising structural material for the next generation nuclear power plants including fast reactors for application in reactor vessels and nuclear fuel. The ODS steel was cooled down by furnace cooling, air cooling, oil quenching and water quenching, respectively, after normalizing it at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and then tempering at $780^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. It is found that grain size, a relative portion of ferrite and martensite, martensitic lath configuration, behaviors of carbide precipitates, and hardness of the ODS steel are strongly dependent on a cooling rate. The grain size and martensitic lath width become smaller with the increase in a cooling rate. The carbides were precipitated at the grain boundaries formed between the ferrite and martensite phases and at the martensitic lath interfaces. In addition, the carbide precipitates become smaller and more widely dispersed with the increase in a cooling rate, resulting in that the faster cooling rate generated the higher hardness of the ODS steel.

An understanding of the cooling requirements of horticultural commodities begins with adequate knowledge of their biological responses. All fresh horticultural products are living organisms, carrying on the many biological processes that are essential to the maintenance of life. The pre-cooling is essential technique for the construction of cold chain system, which is necessary to maintain marketing quality of fresh produces during the transportation and distribution. The purpose of this study is to develop the pressure cooling tunnel using conveyer for the reduction of labor and improvement of pre-cooling efficiency. Performance of developed facility was tested for the strawberries, tomatoes and Chinese cabbages. Cooling ratio as a result of pre-cooling efficiency was 1.57, 1.56 and 1.32 for strawberries, tomatoes, and Chinese cabbages respectively. Cooling ratio decreased with increasing the distance of heat conduction from surface to center. The cooling ratio of Chinese cabbages was lower than that of fruit because of its head and leaf. In aspect of cooling uniformity, there was no significant difference of final temperature among inlet, outlet and middle layers of cold air in fresh produces. After pre-cooling treatment, quality changes were measured for the weight loss, Vit. C content, and titratable acidity. The quality of pre-cooling treatment was better than that of non-treatment and was kept on well during long-term storage.
Internal ring beams are primary components of new ring-stiffened cooling towers. In this study, numerical simulation of the internal flow field of a cooling tower with three ring beams under wind-thermal coupling effect is performed. The studied cooling tower is a 220-m super-large hyperbolic indirect natural draft cooling tower that is under construction in China and will be the World's highest cooling tower, the influence of peripheral radiators in operating cooling tower is also considered. Based on the simulation, the three-dimensional effect and distribution pattern of the wind loads on inner surface of the cooling tower is summarized, the average wind pressure distributions on the inner surface before and after the addition of the ring beams are analyzed, and the influence pattern of ring beams on the internal pressure coefficient value is derived. The action mechanisms behind the air flows inside the tower are compared. In addition, the effects of internal ring beams on temperature field characteristics, turbulence kinetic energy distribution, and wind resistance are analyzed. Finally, the internal pressure coefficients are suggested for ring-stiffened cooling towers under wind-thermal coupling effect. The study shows that the influence of internal stiffening ring beams on the internal pressure and flow of cooling towers should not be ignored, and the wind-thermal coupling effect should also be considered in the numerical simulation of cooling tower flow fields. The primary conclusions presented in this paper offer references for determining the internal suction of such ring-stiffened cooling towers.
The influence of land-use type on surrounding temperature was studied the relationships between land-use types and the air condition analyzing AWS (Automatic Weather Station) data of Seoul from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). The distribution of air temperature by land-use type has been influenced by the different heating and cooling rates. The difference of heating rates depending on the land-use type was largest at 2~3hours after sunrise and the difference of cooling rates was largest from 2hours before sunset to 2hours after sunset with its maximum at sunset. The difference of cooling rates is greatest in a clear and calm weather situation and the large difference in cooling rates between the green areas and built-up area is up to $1.5^{\circ}C/h$. By season, the difference of cooling rates is largest in fall and in turn spring, winter and summer. In a cloudy or rainy day, the difference in heating and cooling rates on land-use type is not distinct but the tendency is similar to a clear day. In all seasons, the rate of difference occurrence of the daily range of temperature between the green areas and built-up area was large, especially fall. In a fall with a clear and calm day, the magnitude of the daily range of temperature between the green areas and built-up area was largest.
The effects of the cooling and annealing conditions on the microstructures and corrosion properties were investigated for the Cu-contained Zr-Nb alloy (Zr-1.1Nb-0.07Cu). After annealing at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, the specimens were cooled by three methods of water quenching, air cooling, and furnace cooling. Widmanstatten structures were developed in both air- and furnace-cooled specimens, and the Widmanstatten plate width of the furnace-cooled specimens was wider than that of the air-cooled ones. The weight gain in the furnace-cooling case was higher than that in the air-cooling case. This could be the reason why the diffusion time was more enough during the furnace cooling than the air cooling. The oxide of the furnace-cooled specimen was nonunformly formed just beneath the Widmanstatten plate boundaries, where ${\beta}_{Zr}$ phases were exised concentrately. Compared with the $640^{\circ}C$ annealing after the water quenching, the $570^{\circ}C$ annealing could make the ${\beta}_{Nb}$ phases and a concomitant reduction of the Nb in the matrix, and then it could improve the corrosion resistance with the increase of the annealing time. It would be concluded that the corrosion resistance of the Zr-1.1Nb-0.07Cu was good when the Nb concentration in the matrix was reached at an equilibrium level and then the ${\beta}_{Nb}$ phase was formed.
