  • Purpose: The effects of job participation on self-esteem and life satisfaction were investigated. Methods: Seventy residents of D welfare center located in G city who were >60 yr-of-age were selected for the study. The SERS research tool (Nugent and Thomas, 1993; modified by Koh, 2002) was used to assess self-esteem before and after a job participation program. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$value-based reliability of this tool was 0.923 and 0.920 before and after the job participation program, respectively. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$value-based life satisfaction as measured according to Choi (1986) was 0.932 and 0.933 before and after the job participation program, respectively. Results: The hypothesis that job participation program increases self esteem was supported by the results. The mean self esteem of subjects before and after the job program, 3.31 and 3.48, respectively, represented a significant increase. The hypothesis that the job participation program increases life satisfaction was supported by the results. The mean life satisfaction index of subjects before and after the program, 3.04 and 3.24, respectively, represents a significant increase. Conclusions: Increased job opportunities and income guarantee for adults, particularly the elderly, can increase self-esteem, life satisfaction, and emotional stability.

  • This study aims to investigate how the EBS English (EBSe) After-School program has been implemented in after-school classrooms. It also aims to examine the needs of the teachers and the students involved in the program, as well as their evaluation of the program itself to date. The EBSe After-School program has recently been launched and used in public school contexts less than a year. Thus, it is necessary to examine ways how the EBSe After-School program has been applied in real after-schools; and how the program has been perceived by the people engaged. The study was conducted in 19 elementary schools and 12 middle schools, which ran their after-school classes utilizing the EBSe program. Questionnaires were given to the 52 teachers and 1,258 students using the program. In addition to the questionnaires, syllabi and lesson plans of the after-school classes have also been inspected. The study finds that, despite overall satisfaction with the program, only a small portion of students participated in the after-school classes. Another finding of the study is that there was much difference in the way of implementing the program between the elementary and middle schools. Finally, the study makes some suggestions for improving the program.

  • This study was performed to investigate the dietary habits and satisfaction of school foodservice by high school type (academic high school students (AHSS) : n=200, vocational high school students (VHSS) : n=200). Frequency of skipping breakfast was significantly higher for VHSS compared with AHSS (p<0.001), and reasons for skipping breakfast were significantly high for 'lack of time' and 'habitually' in VHSS (p<0.01). Duration of mealtime was significantly higher for AHSS compared with VHSS (p<0.001). Frequency of snacking was high in both AHSS and VHSS, and after dinner was the most common snack time for AHSS (p<0.001). Most commonly cited methods for improving dietary habits were 'frequently skipping meals' in AHSS and 'irregular meals' in VHSS. Reasons for leaving leftover foods were 'no taste' in AHSS and 'side dish I don't like' in VHSS (p<0.05). Satisfaction of school foodservice was significantly higher for AHSS compared with VHSS (p<0.05). Most commonly cited methods for improving school foodservice were 'varied menu' in AHSS and 'food taste' in VHSS (p<0.05). Commonly cited dietary motivations were 'preference' in AHSS and 'resolving starvation' in VHSS (p<0.001). As preference is an important factor, new menu development and continuous nutritional education should be necessary for menu diversity in order to raise satisfaction by using foods with high preference and superior nutrition.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that completing long-term on-site training with varying grades of success had on the job satisfaction of former university students after obtaining employment. Although the grades themselves achieved during long-term on-site training did not directly affect job satisfaction, positive effects on job satisfaction were shown due to the mediating effects of job match and organizational commitment. The results of this study are as follows: First, it was found that employees who participated in long-term on-site training showed different results in belonging and attachment to their organizations according to their achievement. The higher the grades during long-term on-site training, the higher the degree of reported job match and organizational commitment, suggesting a positive correlation with job satisfaction. Therefore, long-term on-site training should not be operated as simply a program for temporary experiential learning, but instead should be optimized by companies and schools to motivate their students to achieve high grades for the purpose of their future job satisfaction.
