  • This paper describes a multipath estimation method for Global Positioning System (GPS) dual frequency carrier phase measurements. Multipath is a major error source in high precision GPS applications, i.e., carrier phase measurements for precise positioning and attitude determinations. In order to estimate and remove multipath at carrier phase measurements, an array GPS antenna system has been used. The known geometry between the antennas is used to estimate multipath parameters. Dual frequency carrier phase measurements increase the redundancy of measurements, so it can reduce the number of antennas. The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is recently applied to many areas to overcome some of the limitations of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) such as weakness to severe nonlinearity. This paper uses the UKF for estimating multipath parameters. A series of simulations were performed with GPS antenna arrays located on a straight line with one reflector. The geometry information of the antenna array reduces the number of estimated multipath parameters from four to three. Both the EKF and the UKF are used as estimation algorithms and the results of the EKF and the UKF are compared. When the initial parameters are far from true parameters, the UKF shows better performance than the EKF.

  • Recently, UFRs (Unmanned Flying Robots) have begun to be utilized in various areas for civilian and military applications. Due to this increased utilization, accidents involving UFRsare also increasing. To prevent or monitor accidents caused by UFRs, high-accuracy positioning information is one of the most important technical elements. This paper proposes an efficient UFR monitoring system which provides accurate UFR positioning information with low-cost onboard elements; a small ARM module based on an embedded Linux operating system, a low-cost single frequency GPS receiver with a cheap patch antenna, and a versatile wireless network interface module. The ground monitoring system employs a dual frequency GPS receiver to generate exact UFR coordinates with cm-level accuracy. By processing the UFR measurements based on the Inverse RTK (Real Time Kinematic) method, the ground monitoring system determines the cm-level accurate coordinates of the UFR. The feasibility of the proposed UFR monitoring system was evaluated by three experiments in terms of data loss and accuracy.

  • An optical fiber-based beam width measurement technique is presented. The proposed system can be applied to the optical fiber industry in applications such as lensed fiber, optical fiber based laser beam source, and fiber optic sensor. The measurement system is composed of optical fiber, which is used as a transceiver, and a single grating panel which consists of a multi-reflection area with an even non-reflection area. The grating panel is used to vary the reflected light. When the widths of the reflection area and non-reflection area are larger than the optical beam width, the reflected light is varied at the interface between the reflection area and the non-reflection area by the movement of the grating panel. Experiments were conducted in order to verify the feasibility of the proposed technique. Multi-mode fiber combined with a collimator was selected as an emitter and a receiver, and the beam width measurement system was contrived. Subsequently, the proposed method and the system were verified by comparing the experimental results with the results of the conventional charge-coupled device technique.

  • A space launch vehicle system represents a typical example of large-scale multi-disciplinary systems, consisting of subsystems such as mechanical structure, electronics, control, telecommunication, propulsion, material engineering etc. A lot of cost is required to develop the launch vehicle system. A precise planning of R&D cost is very essential to make a success of the launch vehicle development program. Especially in the early development phase of a new space launch vehicle system, cost estimation techniques and analogy from past similar development data are very useful methods to estimate a development cost of the launch vehicle system. Now Korea Aerospace Research Institute is in charge of the KSLV-I (Korea Space Launch Vehicle-I) Program that is a part of Korea National Space program. KSLV-I Program is a national undertaking to develop launch capabilities to deliver science satellites of a 100kg-class into a low earth orbit. It is hereafter, going to plan to develop a new korean space launch vehicle. In this paper, first the development costs of well-known launch vehicles in the world are presented to provide a reference to make a development plan of a new launch vehicle. Second this paper introduces the present status of cost estimation applications at NASA. Finally this paper presents the results from application of a TRANSCOST, a parametric cost model, to derive a cost estimate of a new launch vehicle development, as an example.

  • Recently, the importance for internet of things (IoT) security has increased enormously and hardware-based compact chips are needed in IoT communication industries. In this paper, we propose low-complexity crypto-processor that unifies advanced encryption standard (AES), academy, research, institute, agency (ARIA), and CLEFIA protocols into one combined design. In the proposed crypto-processor, encryption and decryption processes are shared, and 128-bit round key generation process is combined. Moreover, the shared design has been minimized to be adapted in generic IoT devices and systems including lightweight IoT devices. The proposed crypto-processor was implemented in Verilog hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate level circuit in 65nm CMOS process, which results in 11,080 gate counts. This demonstrates roughly 42% better than the aggregates of three algorithm implementations in the aspect of gate counts.

  • This paper represents a reentry time prediction analysis of CZ-5B rocket-body in China, subject to analysis of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee Reentry (IADC) reentry test campaign conducted in May 2021. Predicting the reentry of space objects is difficult to accurately predict due to the lack of accurate physical information about target, and uncertainty in atmospheric density. Therefore, IADC conducts annual re-entry campaigns to verify analysis techniques by each agency, and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute has also participated in them since 2015. Ballistic coefficient estimation method proposed to predict target reentry time and the result confirmed the difference of 73 seconds, which confirms the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • Composite materials have been used in aerospace industry and many applications because of many advantages such as specific strength and stiffness and corrosion resistance etc. However, it is vulnerable to impacts, these impact lead to formation of cracks in composite laminate and failure of structures. In this paper, we analyzed Mode I fracture toughness of Carbon/Epoxy laminates using acoustic emission signal. DCB test was carried out to analyze Mode I failure characterization of Carbon/Epoxy laminates, and AE sensor was attached to measure AE signal induced by failure of specimen. Fracture toughness was calculated using cumulative AE energy and measured crack length using camera. The calculated fracture toughness was applied in FE model and the result of FE analysis compared with DCB test results. The results show good agreement with between FEM and DCB test results.

  • In recent decades, there has been an increasing interest in the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) in aerospace, renewable energy and other industries, due to its low weight and relatively good mechanical properties compared with traditional metals. However, due to the high cost of petroleum-based precursors and their associated processing costs, CF remains a specialty product and as such has been limited to use in high-end aerospace, sporting goods, automotive, and specialist industrial applications. The high cost of CF is a problem in various applications and the use of CFRP has been impeded by the high cost of CF in various applications. This paper presents an overview of research related to the fabrication of low cost CF using polyethylene (PE) control technology, and identifies areas requiring additional research and development. It critically reviews the results of cross-linked PE control technology studies, and the development of promising control technologies, including acid, peroxide, radiation and silane cross-linking methods.

  • The multi scale wavelet-Galerkin method implemented in an adaptive manner has an advantage of obtaining accurate solutions with a substantially reduced number of interpolation points. The method is becoming popular, but its numerical efficiency still needs improvement. The objectives of this investigation are to present a new numerical scheme to improve the performance of the multi scale adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method and to give detailed implementation procedure. Specifically, the subdomain technique suitable for multiscale methods is developed and implemented. When the standard wavelet-Galerkin method is implemented without domain subdivision, the interaction between very long scale wavelets and very short scale wavelets leads to a poorly-sparse system matrix, which considerably worsens numerical efficiency for large-sized problems. The performance of the developed strategy is checked in terms of numerical costs such as the CPU time and memory size. Since the detailed implementation procedure including preprocessing and stiffness matrix construction is given, researchers having experiences in standard finite element implementation may be able to extend the multi scale method further or utilize some features of the multiscale method in their own applications.
