  • A program based on a 2-D CFD code has been developed to simulate a gas turbine engine. 2-D Navier-Stokes implicit code with $k-\omega$ turbulent model is used in compressor and turbine. Lumped method chemical equilibrium code with 10 species of molecular is applied to combustor with assuming perfect mixture and 100% combustion efficiency at constant pressure state. Fluid properties are shared on interfaces between engine components. Compressor supplies outlet temperature and pressure to combustor. At the same time, combustor also carries temperature and pressure to turbine. The back pressure of compressor outlet is transferred by inlet pressure of turbine. Unsteady phenomena in rotor-stator are covered by mixing-plane method. The running condition of engine can be determined only by given the inlet condition of compressor, the outlet condition of turbine, equivalence ratio and rotating speed.

  • The series hybrid system targeted in this study uses a reciprocating engine, a generator, and a battery as a main power source for the unmanned aerial vehicle. The generator is directly connected to the drive shaft of the reciprocating engine, and the operating characteristics of the reciprocating engine-generator set were confirmed through ground integration tests. In this study, based on the test results, a control logic is proposed an efficient use of the reciprocating engine-generator power and battery power. Also, the power variations of the reciprocating engine-generator and battery according to the logic were verified through simulation. As a result, it was confirmed that the engine-generator power supplied the power required for propulsion along with the battery power by the proposed control logic.

  • The performance of an entire pump system composed of an inducer, an impeller, a volute and seals has been computationally analyzed. A commercial three dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes method is used in this study. The axial thrust is predicted from the pump calculation in its entirety, which is necessary for such estimation. Moreover, the effects of each component on the pump performance are investigated at a design condition through the analysis of flow structures. The predicted performance is in good agreement with experimental data in terms of head rise, efficiency and volute wall pressure distributions despite of highly complex flow structures being present. The computational results also show that the axial and radial thrusts are within the design limit although corresponding experimental measurements were not taken.

  • In a liquid rocket engine system, the flow of oxidizer into the combustion chamber is controlled by the main oxidizer shut-off valve. When the valve is closed, the oxidizer flows via the recirculation line, not into the combustion chamber. In this situation, the measured pressure could be much higher than a design value because of the water hammer phenomenon. In this paper, the experiments on the water hammer in the recirculation line with different initial conditions were conducted in order to study the pressure wave produced in each case. According to the experimental results, characteristics of the pressure wave in the recirculation line depend on the initial condition. To be specific, the pressure surge is maximized in case that the shock is condensation-oriented in the end of the recirculation line.

  • The autogenous pressurization has been widely adopted for propulsion systems of next-generation reusable rockets due to its low cost and high reliability. The autogenous pressurization has a simple structure, but an understanding of the heat and mass transfer occurring inside the tank is essential. For this reason, a simulation test of the autogenous pressurization was conceived. The experiment equipment was constructed based on overseas pressurization test facilities cases and expert advice. Unlike the actual autogenous pressurization system, the propellant tank was insulated to exclude external influences. The pressurized gas supply line and the propellant pipe were separated. Using the manufactured autogenous pressure experiment equipment, it is possible to evaluate the condensation phenomenon of pressurants in cryogenic propellants, comparison of the efficiency of pressurization using helium and evaporated gas and the pressurization capacity according to the temperature of pressurant.

  • Electric propulsion is a type of space propulsion with a high specific impulse by accelerating propellant using electrical energy and brings about reduction of the fuel mass and launch costs of satellites so that it is being extensively studied in the world. Electric thrusters are widely used for various purposes from micro satellites to large satellites and from low Earth orbit satellites to spacecraft for exploration. Recently, satellites using full-electric propulsion have been developed, and the number of satellites with electric propulsion is also gradually increasing. In this paper, the current status and trends of research on electric propulsion in the United States, Europe, and Japan will be reported.

  • Performance requirement analysis and weight estimation of a reusable launch vehicle with a rocket-based air-breathing engine(RBCC : Rocket Based Combined Cycle) were performed. Performance model for an RBCC engine was developed and integrated with flight trajectory model. The integrated engine-trajectory model was validated by comparing the results with those from previous research reference. Based on the new engine-trajectory model and previous research results, engine performance requirements were derived for an reusable launching vehicle with gross take-off weight of 15 tones. Dependence of the propellant amount requirement on the mode transition Mach number of the engine was also analyzed.

  • The 1-D numerical study of the interior ballistics has been conducted. The unsteady compressible 1-D CFD code using SIMPLER algorithm and QUICK scheme has been developed. The mathematical model of the two-phase flow has been established for the behavior of the interior ballistics. The moving boundary due to the projectile motion as the physical phenomena of the interior ballistics results in the varied control volume. In order to analyze the moving boundary, the numerical codes, which apply the ghost-cell extrapolation method and the Lagrangian method respectively, have been developed. The ghost-cell extrapolation method has been used in the Eulerian coordinate system. The Lagrangian method has been used in Non-Eulerian coordinate system. These codes have been verified through the analysis of the free piston motion problem in the tube. Through this study, the basic techniques of the numerical code for the multi-dimensional two-phase flow of the interior ballistics have been obtained.
