Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter Magnetometer Instrument and Initial Data Processing

  • The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), the first South Korea lunar exploration probe, successfully arrived at the Moon on December, 2022 (UTC), following a 4.5-month ballistic lunar transfer (BLT) trajectory. Since the launch (4 August, 2022), the KPLO magnetometer (KMAG) has carried out various observations during the trans-lunar cruise phase and a 100 km altitude lunar polar orbit. KMAG consists of three fluxgate magnetometers capable of measuring magnetic fields within a ± 1,000 nT range with a resolution of 0.2 nT. The sampling rate is 10 Hz. During the originally planned lifetime of one year, KMAG has been operating successfully while performing observations of lunar crustal magnetic fields, magnetic fields induced in the lunar interior, and various solar wind events. The calibration and offset processes were performed during the TLC phase. In addition, reliabilities of the KMAG lunar magnetic field observations have been verified by comparing them with the surface vector mapping (SVM) data. If the KPLO's mission orbit during the extended mission phase is close enough to the lunar surface, KMAG will contribute to updating the lunar surface magnetic field map and will provide insights into the lunar interior structure and lunar space environment.

Analysis of Navigation Error According to Rotational Motions of Rotational Inertial Navigation for Designing Optimal Rotation Sequence (최적 회전 절차 설계를 위한 회전형 관성항법장치의 회전 동작별 항법 오차 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the navigation error for each rotational motion in order to design an optimal rotation sequence, which is a key technology in the rotational inertial navigation. Rotational inertial navigation system is designed to cancel out navigation errors caused by inertial sensor errors by periodically rotating the inertial measurement unit. A properly sequenced rotational motion cancels out the maximum amount of navigation error and is known as an optimal rotation sequence. To design such an optimal turning procedure, this paper identifies the feasible rotational motions that can be implemented in a rotational inertial navigation system and analyzes the navigation error introduced by each rotational motion. In addition, by analyzing the characteristics of the navigation error generated during a rotation sequence in combination, this paper presents the conditions for designing an optimal rotation sequence.

Analysis of Improvement Targets for Public Safety Threats in the Maritime Area Around the Launch Site (발사장 주변 해상의 공공안전 위협요인에 대한 개선 대상 분석)

  • Securing safety in the maritime danger zone around the launch site before a launch is a fundamental requirement. If maritime safety is not ensured, the launch is halted or postponed. However, challenges have arisen in the process of securing public safety at sea due to factors such as the increasing population engaged in water leisure activities. These challenges include unauthorized entry of vessels into controlled areas, unauthorized access by water leisure activity participants, and non-compliance with regulations. In this paper, we employed the Delphi/Analytic Hierarchy Process to survey 22 experts, including professionals in launch vehicle development and launch site operation, to identify 10 factors posing threats to maritime public safety. Additionally, we identified five issues that need improvement for ensuring maritime safety. This study verified the consistency of expert opinions and conducted an analysis of importance and prioritization, objectively confirming the necessity for amendments to relevant laws or the enactment of new laws concerning the establishment and control of danger zones around launch sites.

Residual Stress Comparison of Type III Hydrogen Tank by Curing Conditions (Type III 수소탱크 경화조건에 따른 잔류응력 비교)

  • Since the residual stress of hydrogen tank is directly related to durability, it is very important to reduce it for safety. Type II~IV hydrogen tank are manufactured by the filament winding method, in which the fiber is impregnated with resin and wound around the liner. Residual stress in composite is affected by curing conditions and fiber tension etc. In this study, the effect of curing conditions on residual stress was analyzed when manufacturing a Type III hydrogen tank using carbon fiber filament winding process. First, the curing behavior of the epoxy resin was analyzed using a differential scanning calorimetry. Through this, the curing temperature was set to 140℃. During the same curing time, the specimens were cured under 2-stage curing condition that reached 140℃ earlier and a 4-stage curing condition that reached 140℃ later, respectively. After curing, the residual stress of the composite material was measured by the ring slitting method, and the experimental values were compared with numerical values. It was confirmed that there was a significant difference in residual stress according to the optimization of curing conditions.

Validation of Actuator Gearbox Accelerated Test Method Using Multi-Body Dynamics Simulation (다물체 동역학 시뮬레이션을 이용한 작동기용 기어박스 가속시험법 검증)

  • Gearboxes designed for reciprocating motion operating mechanisms operate under conditions where both the load and speed undergo continuous variations. When conducting durability tests on gearboxes designed for such applications, operating the target gearbox under conditions similar to the intended usage is essential. The gearbox must be operated for the required number of cycles to validate its durability under conditions mirroring its intended usage. This study devised an accelerated test method for gearboxes, which reduces operating angles and operational strokes. The reliability of the accelerated test was verified by comparing the stresses imposed on the gears under general and acceleration conditions through multi-body dynamic simulations. The results confirmed that the maximum contact stress levels under normal and accelerated conditions were within a 0.1% error range, indicating a minimal difference in the gear damage rates. However, a difference in the maximum contact stress results between the normal and accelerated conditions was observed when inertial forces acted on the output shaft due to the operational acceleration of the gearbox. Therefore, when conducting this acceleration test, caution should be exercised to ensure that the operational load on the gearbox, which affects inertia, does not significantly deviate from the conditions observed under normal operating conditions.

  • The aerospace and power generation industries have an increasing demand for high-temperature, high-strength materials. However, conventional materials typically lack sufficient fracture toughness and oxidation resistance at high temperatures. This study aims to enhance the high-temperature properties of Nb-Si-Ti alloys through ball milling. To analyze the effects of milling time, the progression of alloying is evaluated on the basis of XRD patterns and the microstructure of alloy powders. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is employed to produce compacts, with thermodynamic modeling assisting in predicting phase fractions and sintering temperature ranges. The changes in the microstructure and variation in the mechanical properties due to the adjustment of the sintering temperature provide insights into the influence of Nb solid solution, Nb5Si3, and crystallite size within the compacts. By investigating the changes in the mechanical properties through strengthening mechanisms, such as precipitation strengthening, solid solution strengthening, and crystallite refinement, this study aims to verify the applicability of Nb-Si-Ti alloys in advanced material systems.

The Effect of Applying the X-ray Screening Ability Rating for Security Screening Persons in Incheon International Airport (인천국제공항 보안검색요원 X-ray 판독등급제 적용 효과)

  • The purpose of this study verify to the effect of applying the X-ray screening ability rating for security screening persons in Incheon International Airport. Data collected through a evaluation score of 1,034 security screening persons in Incheon International Airport. Data analysis performed using paired sample t-test. The research results found that it was a statistically significant difference pre-test and post-test applying the X-ray screening ability rating. In this article, we asserts that the X-ray screening ability rating is effective in improving the X-ray screening ability of security screening persons. This paper contribute to the academic expansion of motivation theory and self-determination theory. This study is valuable as a preemptive empirical research that provides practical implications about the application of X-ray screening ability rating for security screening persons.

  • This paper aims to establish a reconfigurable flight simulation environment to conduct safety evaluation of various electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Since the inceptor, aircraft dynamics model, and controller applied to each eVTOL aircraft are different, it was configured to be variable so that a simulation can be executed for each eVTOL aircraft. Test elements and performance indicators were set to perform safety evaluation of eVTOL aircraft. Ground auxiliary equipments were designed and implemented in a simulation environment according to test procedures for each test element. In addition, to analyze safety performance, a simulation flight data collection environment based on MATLAB/Simulink and a tool for safety performance analysis were implemented. Test flight and analysis were conducted in the implemented simulation environment in this paper. Finally, this study shows the environment was verified by confirming that it was performed normally.

  • Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) providing position, navigation and timing (PNT) services consist of satellite, ground, and user systems. Monitoring stations, a key element of the ground segment, play a crucial role in continuously collecting satellite navigation signals for service provision and fault detection. These stations detect anomalies such as threats to the signal-in-space (SIS) of satellites, receiver issues, and local threats. They deliver received data and detection results to the master station. This paper introduces the main monitoring algorithms and measurement pre-processing processes for quality assessment and fault detection of received satellite signals in current satellite navigation system monitoring stations. Furthermore, it proposes a strategy for the development of components, architecture, and algorithms for the new regional navigation satellite system (RNSS) monitoring stations.

  • Various buildings are scattered below and around the flight path of UAM (Urban Air Mobility), which flies within a densely populated urban area. And the vertiport used by UAM for takeoff and landing is located on a flat area within the city center or on top of a building. As such, UAM operates in densely populated urban areas, and vertiports for takeoff and landing are installed in densely populated areas, requiring a very high level of safety. In particular, for safe landing of UAM, it is necessary to monitor the approach status of UAM approaching the vertiport from the final approach course and provide approach information. Accordingly, to monitor the UAM vertiport final approach path, research was conducted on technology that utilizes optical equipment that can be installed in a narrow site and has the advantage of reducing the burden of electromagnetic waves.
