  • A radiative transfer model with two-stream/delta-Eddington approximation has been developed to calculate the vertical distributions of atmospheric heating rates and radiative fluxes. The performance of the model has been evaluated by comparison with the results of ICRCCM (Intercomparison of radiative codes in climate models). It has been demonstrated that the presented model has a capability to calculate the solar radiation not only accurately but also economically. The characteristics of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-320nm) are examined by comparison of relation between the flux at the top of atmosphere and that at the surface. The relation of UV-B is quadratic due to the strong ozone absorption in this band. Also, the dependence of the UV-B radiation on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption on the stratospheric ozone depletion and stratospheric aerosol haze due to volcanic eruption has been tested with various solar zenith angles. The surface UV-B increases as the solar zenith angle increases. The existence of stratospheric aerosols causes an increase in the planetary albedo due to the aerosols' backscattering. The planetary albedo with aerosol's effect has been increases as the solar zenith angle is not sensitive. It may be caused by the fact that the aerosols' scattering effect becomes saturated with the relatively long path length in a large solar zenith angle. Finally, the regional impact of stratospheric aerosols due to volcanic eruption on the intensity of UV-B radiation at the surface has been estimated. A direct effect is that the flux is diminished at the low latitudes, while it is enhanced in the high latitudes by the aerosols' photon trap or twilight effect. In the high latitudes, both aerosols' scattering and ozone absorption have strong and opposite impacts to the surface UV-B radiation is located at the mid-latitudes during spring season in both hemispheres.

  • Rarefied gas flows through two-dimensional micro channels are studied numerically for the performance optimization of a nanomembrane-based Knudsen compressor. The effects of the wall temperature distributions on the thermal transpiration flow patterns are examined. The flow has a pumping effect, and the mass flow rates through the channel are calculated. The results show that a steady one-way flow is induced for a wide range of the Knudsen number. The DSMC(direct simulation Monte Carlo) method with VHS(variable hard sphere) model and NTC(no time counter) techniques has been applied in this work to obtain numerical solutions. A critical element that drives Knudsen compressor Is the thermal transpiration membrane. The membranes are based on aerosol or machined aerogel. The aerogel is modeled as a single micro flow channel.

  • In this study, correlations between Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) derived Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) values and surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations at Gosan, Korea have been investigated. For this purpose, data from various instruments, such as satellite, sunphotometer, Optical Particle Counter (OPC), and Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) on 14-24 October 2009 were used. Direct comparison between sunphotometer measured AOD and surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations showed a $R^2=0.48$. Since the AERONET L2.0 data has significant number of observations with high AOD values paired to low surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ values, which were believed to be the effect of thin cloud or Asian dust. Correlations between MODIS AOD and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration were increased by screening thin clouds and Asian dust cases by use of aerosol profile data on Micro-Pulse Lidar Network (MPLNet) as $R^2$ > 0.60. Our study clearly demonstrates that satellite derived AOD is a good surrogate for monitoring atmospheric PM concentration.

  • Atmospheric aerosols interact with sunlight and affect the global radiation balance that can cause climate change through direct and indirect radiative forcing. Because of the spatial and temporal uncertainty of aerosols in atmosphere, aerosol characteristics are not considered through GCMs (General Circulation Model). Therefor it is important physical and optical characteristics should be evaluated to assess climate change and radiative effect by atmospheric aerosols. In this study GMS-5 satellite data and surface measurement data were analyzed using a radiative transfer model for the Yellow Sand event of April 7~8, 2000 in order to investigate the atmospheric radiative effects of Yellow Sand aerosols, MODTRAN3 simulation results enable to inform the relation between satellite channel albedo and aerosol optical thickness(AOT). From this relation AOT was retreived from GMS-5 visible channel. The variance observations of satellite images enable remote sensing of the Yellow Sand particles. Back trajectory analysis was performed to track the air mass from the Gobi desert passing through Korean peninsular with high AOT value measured by ground based measurement. The comparison GMS-5 AOT to ground measured RSR aerosol optical depth(AOD) show that for Yellow Sand aerosols, the albedo measured over ocean surfaces can be used to obtain the aerosol optical thickness using appropriate aerosol model within an error of about 10%. In addition, LIDAR network measurements and backward trajectory model showed characteristics and appearance of Yellow Sand during Yellow Sand events. These data will be good supporting for monitoring of Yellow Sand aerosols.

  • Solar radiation is scattered and absorbed atmospheric compositions in the atmosphere before it reaches the surface and, then after reflected at the surface, until it reaches the satellite sensor. Therefore, consideration of the radiative transfer through the atmosphere is essential for the quantitave analysis of the satellite sensed data, specially at shortwave region. This study examined a feasibility of using radiative transfer code for estimating the atmospheric effects on satellite remote sensing data. To do this, the flux simulated by LOWTRAN7 is compared with CAGEX data in shortwave region. The CAGEX (CERES/ARM/GEWEX Experiment) data provides a dataset of (1) atmospheric soundings, aerosol optical depth and albedo, (2) ARM(Aerosol Radiation Measurement) radiation flux measured by pyrgeometers, pyrheliometer and shadow pyranometer and (3) broadband shortwave flux simulated by Fu-Liou's radiative transfer code. To simulate aerosol effect using the radiative transfer model, the aerosol optical characteristics were extracted from observed aerosol column optical depth, Spinhirne's experimental vertical distribution of scattering coefficient and D'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosols radiative characteristics. Simulation of LOWTRAN7 are performed on 31 sample of completely clear days. LOWTRAN's result and CAGEX data are compared on upward, downward direct, downward diffuse solar flux at the surface and upward solar flux at the top of the atmosphere(TOA). The standard errors in LOWTRAN7 simulation of the above components are within 5% except for the downward diffuse solar flux at the surface(6.9%). The results show that a large part of error in LOWTRAN7 flux simulation appeared in the diffuse component due to scattering mainly by atmispheric aerosol. For improving the accuracy of radiative transfer simulation by model, there is a need to provide better information about the radiative charateristrics of atmospheric aerosols.

  • The worldwide focus on reducing the emissions, fuel and lubricant consumption in T-GDI engines is leading engineers to consider the crankcase ventilation and oil mist separation system as an important means of control. In today's passenger cars, the oil mist separation systems mainly use the inertia effect (e.g. labyrinth, cyclone etc.). Therefore, this study has investigated high efficiency cylinder head-integrated oil-mist separator by using a compact multi-impactor type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. For this purpose, engine dynamometer testing with oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and 3D two-phase flow simulation have been performed for various engine operating conditions. Tests with an actual engine on a dynamometer showed oil aerosol particle size distributions varied depending on operating conditions. For instance, high rpm and load increases bot only blow-by gases but the amount of small size oil droplets. Submicron-sized particles (less than 0.5 ㎛) were also observed. It is also found that the impactor type separator is able to separate nearly no droplets of diameter lower than 3 ㎛. CFD results showed that the complex aerodynamics processes that lead to strong impingement and break-up can strip out large droplets and generate more small size droplets.

  • In this present study, the effects of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM), Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), $O_3$ Vertical Column Density ($O_3$ VCD), and Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) on the accuracy of sulfur dioxide Vertical Column Density ($SO_2$ VCD) retrieval have been quantified using the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) method with the ground-based direct-sun synthetic radiances. The synthetic radiances produced based on the Beer-Lambert-Bouguer law without consideration of the diffuse effect. In the SNR condition of 650 (1300) with FWHM = 0.6 nm, AOD = 0.2, $O_3$ VCD = 300 DU, and $SZA=30^{\circ}$, the Absolute Percentage Difference (APD) between the true $SO_2$ VCD values and those retrieved ranges from 80% (28%) to 16% (5%) for the $SO_2$ VCD of $8.1{\times}10^{15}$ and $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, respectively. For an FWHM of 0.2 nm (1.0 nm) with the $SO_2$ VCD values equal to or greater than $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, the APD ranges from 6.4% (29%) to 6.2% (10%). Additionally, when FWHM, SZA, AOD, and $O_3$ VCD values increase, APDs tend to be large. On the other hand, SNR values increase, APDs are found to decrease. Eventually, it is revealed that the effects of FWHM and SZA on $SO_2$ VCD retrieval accuracy are larger than those of $O_3$ VCD and AOD. The SZA effects on the reduction of $SO_2$ VCD retrieval accuracy is found to be dominant over the that of FWHM for the condition of $SO_2$ VCD larger than $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$.

  • Global solar radiation was calculated in this research using ground-base measurement data, meteorological satellite data, and GWNU (Gangneung-Wonju National University) solar radiation model. We also analyzed the accuracy of the GWNU model by comparing the observed solar radiation according to the total cloud cover. Our research was based on the global solar radiation of the GWNU radiation site in 2012, observation data such as temperature and pressure, humidity, aerosol, total ozone amount data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) sensor, and Skyview data used for evaluation of cloud mask and total cloud cover. On a clear day when the total cloud cover was 0 tenth, the calculated global solar radiations using the GWNU model had a high correlation coefficient of 0.98 compared with the observed solar radiation, but root mean square error (RMSE) was relatively high, i.e., $36.62Wm^{-2}$. The Skyview equipment was unable to determine the meteorological condition such as thin clouds, mist, and haze. On a cloudy day, regression equations were used for the radiation model to correct the effect of clouds. The correlation coefficient was 0.92, but the RMSE was high, i.e., $99.50Wm^{-2}$. For more accurate analysis, additional analysis of various elements including shielding of the direct radiation component and cloud optical thickness is required. The results of this study can be useful in the area where the global solar radiation is not observed by calculating the global solar radiation per minute or time.

  • Various seeding materials for cloud seeding are being used, and sodium chloride powder is one of them, which is commonly used. This study analyzed the experimental results of multi-aircraft cloud seeding in connection with Republic of Korea Air Force (CN235) and KMA/NIMS(Korea Meteorological Administration/National Institute of Meteorological Sciences) Atmospheric Research Aircraft. Powdered sodium chloride was used in CN235 for the first time in South Korea. The analysis of the cloud particle size distributions and radar reflectivity before and after cloud seeding showed that the growth efficiency of powdery seeding material in the cloud is slightly higher than that of hygroscopic flare composition in the distribution of number concentrations by cloud aerosol particle diameter (10 ~ 1000 ㎛). Considering the radar reflectivity, precipitation, and numerical model simulation, the enhanced precipitation due to cloud seeding was calculated to be a maximum of 3.7 mm for 6 hours. The simulated seeding effect area was about 3,695 km2, which corresponds to 13,634,550 tons of water. In the precipitation component analysis, as a direct verification method, the ion equivalent concentrations (Na+, Cl-, Ca2+) of the seeding material at the Bukgangneung site were found to be about 1000 times higher than those of other non-affected areas between about 1 and 2 hours after seeding. This study suggests the possibility of continuous multi-aircraft cloud seeding experiments to accumulate and increase the amount of precipitation enhancement.
