  • Aerodynamic shape optimization of two-dimensional airfoils in inviscid compressible flows is performed using a continuous adjoint formulation on unstructured meshes. Accurate evaluation of the gradient is achieved by using a reconstruction scheme based on the Laplacian averaging. A least-square method with extended stencil is used for flow gradient calculations. Proper convergence criterion is studied on Euler and adjoint equations for efficient design. The present method has been applied to RAE2822 and NACA0012 airfoils such that wave drag can be minimized by removing the shock wave. An inverse design is also performed to recover the shock wave on the designed RAE2822 airfoil.

  • The purpose of this study is paper is to improve the flow performance and to reduce the aerodynamic noise of air discharge system consisting of a centrifugal fan, ducts and a housing for the clothes dryer. Using computational fluid dynamics and acoustic analogy based on FW-H (Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings) Eq., air flow field and acoustic fields of the air discharge system are investigated. To optimize aerodynamic performance and aerodynamic noise, the response surface method is employed. The two factors central composite design using the inflow and outflow angles of fan blades is adopted. The devised optimum design shows the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy in the ducts and the housing of the system, and as a result, the improved flow rate and reduce noise is confirmed. Finally, the experment using the proto-type manufactured usign the optimum design shows the increase of flow rate by 4.2 %.

  • In this research, a MDO(multi-disciplinary design optimization) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis to design an aircraft wing, is constructed. Whole optimization process is automated by a parametric-modeling approach. A CFD mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling of CATIA and Gridgen followed by automatic flow analysis using Fluent. Finite element mesh is generated automatically by parametric method of MSC.Patran PCL. Aerodynamic load is transferred to Finite element model by the volume spline method. RSM(Response Surface Method) is applied for optimization, which helps to achieve global optimum. As the design problem to test the current MDO framework, a wing weight minimization with constraints of lift-drag ratio and deflection of the wing is selected. Aspect ratio, taper ratio and sweepback angle are defined as design variables. The optimization result demonstrates the successful construction of the MDO framework.

  • In the present paper, fowler flap was optimized to maximize the lift with response surface method. Leading edge shape and the gap between main airfoil and flap, were optimized and the aerodynamic characteristics was improved considerably. The optimized flap has more rounded leading edge and bigger gap. Before angle of attack, $10^{\circ}$, lift and drag are improved and the optimized flap shows similar aerodynamic characteristics to the original flap. The flow condition for optimization was angle of attack, $10^{\circ}$, Mach number, 0.2, flap deflection, $40^{\circ}$.

  • An energy-based variational approach is used for structural dynamic modeling of the IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composites) flapping wing. Dynamic characteristics of the wing are analyzed using numerical simulations. Starting with the initial design, critical parameters which have influence on the performance of the wing are identified through parametric studies. An optimization study is performed to obtain improved flapping actuation of the IPMC wing. It is shown that the optimization algorithm leads to a flapping wing with dimensions similar to the dragonfly Aeshna Multicolor wing. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on modified strip theory is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the IPMC wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small payload. It is therefore a potential candidate for flapping wing of micro air vehicles.

  • A new design approach of complex geometries such as wing/body configuration is arranged by using overset mesh techniques under large scale computing environment. For an in-depth study of the flow physics and highly accurate design, several special overlapped structured blocks such as collar grid, tip-cap grid, and etc. which are commonly used in refined drag prediction are adopted to consider the applicability of the present design tools to practical problems. Various pre- and post-processing techniques for overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis are devised or implemented to resolve overset mesh techniques into the design optimization problem based on Gradient Based Optimization Method (GBOM). In the pre-processing, the convergence characteristics of the flow solver and sensitivity analysis are improved by overlap optimization method. Moreover, a new post-processing method, Spline-Boundary Intersecting Grid (S-BIG) scheme, is proposed by considering the ratio of cell area for more refined prediction of aerodynamic coefficients and efficient evaluation of their sensitivities under parallel computing environment. With respect to the sensitivity analysis, discrete adjoint formulations for overset boundary conditions are derived by a full hand-differentiation. A smooth geometric modification on the overlapped surface boundaries and evaluation of grid sensitivities can be performed by mapping from planform coordinate to the surface meshes with Hicks-Henne function. Careful design works for the drag minimization problems of a transonic wing and a wing/body configuration are performed by using the newly-developed and -applied overset mesh techniques. The results from design applications demonstrate the capability of the present design approach successfully.

  • For the efficient reliability analysis, Bi-direction two-point approximation(BTPA) method is developed which solves shortcomings of conventional two-point approximation(TPA) methods that generate an approximate surface with low accuracy or sometimes do an unstable approximate surface. The conventional reliability based design optimization(RBDO) methods require high computational cost compared with the deterministic design optimization(DO) methods. To overcome the computational inefficiency of RBDO, the approximate reliability analysis approaches on the TPA surface are proposed. Using these FORM and SORM analysis strategies, multi-point aerodynamic-structure interacted shape design optimizations with uncertainty are performed very efficiently.

  • In this study, a surrogate model is applied to multi-objective aerodynamic optimization design. For the balanced exploration and exploitation, each objective function is converted into the Expected Improvement (EI) and this value is used as fitness value in the multi-objective optimization instead of the objective function itself. Among the non-dominated solutions about EIs, additional sample points for the update of the Kriging model are selected. The present method was applied to a transonic airfoil design. Design results showed the validity of the present method. In order to obtain the information about design space, two data mining techniques are applied to design results: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Self-Organizing Map (SOM).

  • Airfoils with improved longitudinal static stability were designed for a WIG craft through aerodynamic design optimization. The response surface method is coupled with NURBS-based shape functions and Navier-Stokes flow analysis. The procedure runs in the network-distributed design framework of commercial-code based automated design capability to enhance computational efficiency and robustness.Lift maximization design maintaining similar static margin to a DHMTU airfoil successfully produced a new airfoil shape characterized by pronounced front-loading and the well-known reflexed aft-camber line. Another airfoil design of lower variation in pitching moment during take-off showed weakened front-loaded characteristics and hence decreased lift slightly. Investigations using the present design methodology on an existing optimization result based on potential flow analysis and NACA-type geometry generation demonstrated significance of carrying various geometry generations and more realistic flow analysis with optimization.
