  • Leakage flow through turbine blade tip gap causes strong leakage vortex near the blade suction side and induces large aerodynamic losses. In this study, the conventional plane tip and various squealer tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shape on the total pressure loss. Three tip gap clearances of 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.0% of blade span were tested. Flow measurement was conducted at one chord downstream from the trailing edge with a five-hole probe. Results showed that the leakage vortex was stronger than passage vortex and the mass averaged overall total pressure loss through the cascade was the lowest for suction side blade tip case. For all tested cases, the area averaged overall total pressure loss was increased as the tip clearance increased.

  • An aero-acoustic performance analysis method of regenerative blower is developed as one of the FANDAS codes. The aerodynamic performance of regenerative blower is predicted by using momentum exchange theory coupled with pressure loss and leakage flow models. Based on the performance prediction results, the noise level and spectrum of regenerative blower are predicted by discrete frequency and broadband noise models. The combination of the performance and the noise prediction methods gives aero-acoustic performance map and noise spectrum analysis results, which are well-agreed with the actual measurement results within a few percent relative error.

  • This paper presents the design of a neural network based adaptive control for missile. Acceleration of missile by tail fin control cannot be controllable by DMI (Dynamic Model Inversion) directly because it is non-minimum phase system. To avoid the non-minimum phase system, dynamic model inversion is applied with output-redefinition method. In order to evaluate performance of the suggested controllers we selected the three cases such as control surface fail, control surface loss and wing loss for model uncertainty. The corresponding aerodynamic databases to the failure cases were calculated by using the Missile DATACOM. Using a high fidelity 6DOF simulation program of the missile the performance was evaluates.

  • Three-dimensional flow within a film-cooling hole, which is normally oriented to the main flow, has been measured by using a straight five-hole probe for the blowing ratios of 1.0 and 2.0. The length-to-diameter ratio of the injection hole is fixed to be 1.0 throughout the whole experiments. The result shows that the secondary flow within the hole is strongly affected by the main flow and flow separation at the hole inlet. The higher blowing ratio provides less influence of the main flow on the injectant flow. The three-dimensional flow at the hole exit is considerably altered due to the strong interaction between the injectant and main flow. The aerodynamic loss produced inside the injection hole is mainly attributed to the inlet flow separation.

  • Straight absorptive silencers have been designed to reduce the noise level of a centrifugal blower. Three-dimensional boundary element method is used for the design of absorptive silencers which consist of a perforated main pipe and a outer chamber filled with fibrous material. The experimental results show that the absorptive silencer reduces up to 8 dB(A) in the overall sound pressure level of the blower and up to 15 dB at the blade passing frequency. It is also found that the gap between the silencer and the impeller may substantially alter the acoustic performance of the silencers. The transmission loss predicted by the boundary element method follows overall trends of the measured insertion loss. The experiments also show that the impact of the silencers on the aerodynamic performance of the blower is minimum.

  • The window ventilation system based on the heat recovery device was developed which make air ventilation possible without opening the windows. However, mechanical and aerodynamic noises were come to pass which annoyed people in rooms. In the present study, noise of new window ventilation system was measured in both general room and anechoic chamber. Also, the noise path was detected to find cause of noise generation and vulnerable area of the device. Sound absorptive and insulation materials were applied to mitigate the noise. Finally, an alternative noise control method was suggested which can satisfy with the indoor noise standards. As a result, it was shown that the cause of noise was the low transmission loss in the ventilation system. As a result, it was shown that the main noise source of the ventilation system was the blower and the major cause of noise was the low transmission loss of the ventilation system. It is also concluded that the noise levels complies with the noise standards of 40 dBA when 2 mm rubber sheet is applied inside the ventilation system.

  • A simulation program is developed to analyse the performance of an axial flow turbine stage based on the meanline prediction method. The gradient projection method is utilized to minimize the aerodynamic losses under the specified constraints on such as flow coefficient, total pressure ratio, stage power and blade loading coefficient. After obtaining the optimum point for minimizing the stage loss, a sensitivity analysis is carried out ground the optimum point to find the effects of the design variables and the design constraints on the stage performance. The result of the senitivity analysis under a constant blade loading coefficient shows that the total loss is more sensitive to the mean diameter, the absolute flow angle at nozzle outlet, the relative flow angle at rotor outlet and the axial mean velocity compared to the chords and the pitches. Moreover, the design constraints on the degree of reaction at root and the blade length-to-diameter ratio are found to be most influencial on the maximization of the overall aerodynamic efficiency.

  • The performance of MAV(Micro Air Vehicles) propellers is highly affected by the aerodynamic characteristics of a 2-D blade airfoil shapes. XFOIL is used to predict the lift and drag coefficients in low Reynolds Number flows. ARA-D 6%, which shows a good performance in low Reynolds Number regions, is selected as a blade airfoil. The 3-D propeller blade shape is optimized with the minimum energy loss condition, and the distribution of aerodynamic coefficients of ARA-D 6% is calculated. The designed optimal blade is compared with the Black Widow's propeller blade shape in the same conditions. The results indicate that the designed propeller installed in MAV can provide a good performance.
