  • This work is experimental study about a nozzle part in the aerodynamic igniter using only compressible gas. In study, constructions of the aerodynamic igniter using a supersonic nozzle and an aerospike nozzle have been introduced, and experimental results(mainly max. heating temperature characteristics) have been presented. Using of the supersonic nozzle leads to faster and higher temperature in same mass flow, and the aerospike nozzle works in wide variable range of pressure.

  • The airflow along the surface of a launch vehicle together with base flow of clustered nozzles cause problems which may affect the stability or efficiency of the entire vehicle. The problem may occur when the vehicle is on the launching pad or even during flight. As for such problems, local steady-state loads, overall steady-state loads, buffet, ground wind loads, base heating and rocket-nozzle hinge moments are examined here specifically.

This subsystem consists of fuel tank, supply pump, various control valve, heat exchanger, including reactor, connecting line, adiabatic structures and insulations. In this paper, applicable fuel property is considered at flight characteristic of hypersonic vehicles. In this regard, current state of fuel/cooling system technology is identified.

  • Since the structural temperature of a flight vehicle flying at high speed rises rapidly due to aerodynamic heating, it is necessary for optimum structural design to obtain proper material properties at high temperature by taking into account of its operational environment. For a special alloy, analysis data on strength change due to exposure time to high temperature are very limited, and most of them are for an exposure time longer than 30 minutes for long term operations. In this study, base and weld metal samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloy had been prepared and high temperature tensile tests with induction heating were performed, and then high temperature strength characteristics and strength recovery characteristics through cooling have been analyzed. Pre-tests to determine maximum heating rate were performed, and response characteristics for temperature control were confirmed. As a result, high temperature tensile strength appeared to be lower than that of room temperature, but it was higher than that of high temperature of 30 minite exposure listed in MMPDS. In strength recovery through cooling Ti-6Al-4V alloy has shown higher recovery rate compared with other alloys.

  • In the present work, numerical analyses of air flow in HVAC duct have been carried out for enhancement of cooling/heating performance. For the analyses, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved with the shear stress transport turbulence model. The numerical results were validated in comparison with the experimental data. Based on the numerical results, the HVAC duct was designed to reduce the pressure loss. The modified duct geometry shows largely reduced pressure drop in comparison with the reference geometry. And, through modified duct shape, the performance of air conditioning has been enhanced.

  • In a small centrifugal compressor system, a high-speed motor needs to be developed to drive impellers directly. Heat is generated by both electrical heating due to copper coil resistance and aerodynamic heating in the gap between the rotor and stator in a high-speed motor. Removal of the heat is essential to the design of such motors since most magnetic materials are brittle and can be easily fractured by the heat. In the present study the cooling flow fields and temperature distributions are analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics simulation for a high-speed motor which has air cooling system as well as water cooling system. In the analysis, a conjugate heat transfer problem is solved by considering both convective heat transfer in the cooling system and conduction heat transfer in solid parts. Based on design drawings of a motor, air cooling system and water cooling system are analyzed to obtain temperature field and thus to check the coiling system performance. Also the cooling performance are studied for various flow rates of cooling air and water at the inlets.

  • The measurement of the radiation energy, trunk temperature, leaf area index (LAI), air temperature, vapor pres-sure, and precipitation has been conducted under a mixed forest at Kwangneung Arboretum during the period of 2001. Characteristics of the diurnal and seasonal variation of the radiative energy were investigated. The aerodynamic roughness length was determined as about 1.6 m and the mean albedo was about 0.1 The downward short-wave radiation was linearly correlated with the net radiation and its correlation coefficient was about 0.96. From this linear relation, the heating coefficient was calculated and its annual mean value was about 0.21 The albedo and heating coefficient was varied with season, surface characteristics, and meteorological conditions. The diurnal and seasonal variations of radiation energy were discussed in terms of the surface characteristics and meteorological conditions. In the daytime, during clear skies, net radiation was dominated by the shortwave radiation. In presence of clouds and fog, the radiation energy was diminished. At night, the net radiation was entirely dominated due to the net longwave radiation. There was no distinct diurnal variation in net radiation flux during the overcast or rainy days. The net radiation was strongest in spring and weakest in winter. The seasonal development in leaf area was also reflected in a strong seasonal pattern of the radiation energy balance. The timing, duration, and maximum leaf area and trunk temperature were found to be an important control on radiation energy budget. The trunk temperature was either equal or warmer than air temperature during most of the growing season because the canopy could absorb a substantial amount of sunlight. After autumn (after the middle of October), the trunk temperature was consistently cooler than air temperature.

  • A centrifugal compressor for geothermal heat pump system using R134a as working fluid has been developed. The centrifugal compressor consists of an impeller with splitters, two vaneless diffuser, a low solidity vaned diffuser and a volute. In this compressor, diffuser blade angles are controlled to satisfy both heating and cooling conditions. A aerodynamic design was done by applying the repeating design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic calculation. In this paper, design and performance prediction results of the compressor are presented.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a separable nose cap and its opening device to protect a seeker's window from aerodynamic heating and to decrease the drag force on missile body. The nose cap should be promptly deployed to secure the view field of seeker when it is needed. This cap consists of two nose cap structures and separation devices such as pyro puller and pusher. The performance of pyro puller was fully verified through analyses and several kinds of operating tests. We can obtain a sufficient confidence level of the pyro puller through many operating tests under various environments.
