  • This study presents the aerodynamic admittance function of bridge girder under turbulent flow generated from wind velocity spectrum measured at bridge site. Three dimensional buffeting analysis of concrete cable-stayed bridge were performed considering aerodynamic admittance functions obtained from four different methods. It is revealed from the analysis that vertical buffeting responses considering proper aerodynamic admittance functions were just half of that neglecting aerodynamic admittance function. Grid turbulence was found to relatively lower the aerodynamic admittance function at low frequency range, and to underestimate the buffeting wind forces. It is recommended to use the aerodynamic admittance function evaluated from flutter derivatives or measured at active turbulence in order to properly predict the buffeting responses of bridges.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics depending on the shape of an internal motor in a small-size sirocco fan for residential ventilation have been investigated. For the aerodynamic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the shear stress transport model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses are performed on hexahedral grids using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results at steady-state is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure and efficiency. In order to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics depending on shape of an internal motor in a sirocco fan, the reference shape is analyzed compared to the case without internal motor. Additionally, two shape parameters, height and width of the internal motor in a sirocco fan, are tested to investigate their effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results show that the shape of the internal motor in a sirocco fan is an important factor to improve the aerodynamic performances.

  • This study presents an aerodynamic design and numerical analysis of a centrifugal compressor in gas turbines for SOFC-gas turbine hybrid system application. Total-to-total pressure ratio of the compressor is 3.6:1 that could be used widely for small and large SOFC-gas turbine systems. The compressor consists of a centrifugal impeller and a wedge diffuser. Conceptual design and aerodynamic design with mean line analysis and quasi-3D analysis are performed, and aerodynamic parameters as well as design variables are discussed from the design results. A numerical analysis based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation was performed for the flow analysis of the compressor. The results show that the centrifugal compressor designed meets the design target, and the aerodynamic parameters and results of the compressor can be used for the aerodynamic design of centrifugal compressors and the feasibility study of SOFC-gas turbine system design.

  • Several frameworks for the dynamic analysis of wind-vehicle-bridge systems were presented in the past decade to study the safety or ride comfort of road vehicles as they pass through bridges under crosswinds. The wind loads on the vehicles were generally formed based on the aerodynamic parameters of the stationary vehicles on the ground, and the wind loads for the pure bridge decks without the effects of road vehicles. And very few studies were carried out to explore the dynamic effects of the aerodynamic interference between road vehicles and bridge decks, particularly for the moving road vehicles. In this study, the aerodynamic parameters for both the moving road vehicle and the deck considering the mutually-affected aerodynamic effects are formulized firstly. And the corresponding wind loads on the road vehicle-bridge system are obtained. Then a refined analytical framework of the WVB system incorporating the resultant wind loads, a driver model, and the road roughness in plane to fully consider the lateral motion of the road vehicle under crosswinds is proposed. It is shown that obvious lateral and yaw motions of the road vehicle occur. For the selected single road vehicle passing a long span bridge, slight effects are caused by the aerodynamic interference between the moving vehicle and deck on the dynamic responses of the system.

  • The aerodynamic drag of ultra high-speed train in evacuated tube have been calculated using computational fluid dynamics and the variation of aerodynamic drag for the change of major system parameter of tube-vehicle system such as the train speed, air density, and the tunnel diameter. The aerodynamic drag in the tube increases with increasing train speed, however, the ratio of drag increase in tube is larger than that on the open field, the V square rule. The aerodynamic drag decreases with increasing tunnel diameter and increasing air density, and the drag increasing for air density is almost linear just like that on open field. For some combination of the parameters, the trend of aerodynamic drag of train showed irregularity.

  • This paper deals with dynamic instability of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies, such as launch vehicle and advances missiles subjected to aerodynamic loads and an end rocket thrust. A flying body is simplified into a uniform free-free beam subjected to an end follower thrust. Two types of aerodynamic loads are assumed in the stability analysis. Firstly, it is assumed that two concentrated aerodynamic loads act on the flying body at its nose and tail. Secondly, to take account of effect of unsteady flow due to motion of a flexible flying body, aerodynamic load is estimated by the slender body approximation. Extended Hamilton's principle is applied to the considered beam for deriving the equation of motion. Application of FEM yields standardeigen-value problem. Dynamic stability of the beam is determined by the sign of the real part of the complex eigen-values. If aerodynamic loads are concentrated loads that act on the flying body at its nose and tail, the flutter thrust decreases by about 10% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam subjected only to an end follower thrust. If aerodynamic loads are distributed along the longitudinal axis of the flying body, the flutter thrust decreases by about 70% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam under an end follower thrust. It is found that the flutter thrust is reduced considerably if the aerodynamic loads are taken into account in addition to an end rocket thrust in the stability analysis of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies.

  • Wind tunnel experiments are used to investigate the aerodynamic interactions between vehicles and wind barriers on a railway bridge. Wind barriers with four different heights (1.72 m, 2.05 m, 2.5 m and 2.95 m, full-scale) and three different porosities (0%, 30% and 40%) are studied to yield the aerodynamic coefficients of the vehicle and the wind barriers. The effects of the wind barriers on the aerodynamic coefficients of the vehicle are analyzed as well as the effects of the vehicle on the aerodynamic coefficients of the wind barriers. Finally, the relationship between the drag forces on the wind barriers and the aerodynamic coefficients of the vehicle are discussed. The results show that the wind barriers can significantly reduce the drag coefficients of the vehicle, but that porous wind barriers increase the lift forces on the vehicle. The windward vehicle will significantly reduce the drag coefficients of the porous wind barriers, but the windward and leeward vehicle will increase the drag coefficients of the solid wind barrier. The overturning moment coefficient is a linear function of the drag forces on the wind barriers if the full-scale height of the wind barriers $h{\leq}2.5m$ and the overturning moment coefficients $C_O{\geq}0$.

  • The aerodynamic drag of high-speed train has been calculated and the effect of bogie side fairing on the aerodynamic drag has been investigated. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation based on steady-state 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes equation has been conducted employing FLUENT 12 and the aerodynamic model of HEMU-430x, the Korean next generation high-speed train under development has been built using GAMBIT 2.4.6. Three types of bogie side fairing configuration, the proto-type without fairing, half-covered fairing to avoid the interference with the bogie frame and full-covered fairing have been adopted to the train model to compare the drag reduction effects of the bogie side fairing configurations and the numerical results yields that the bogie side fairing can reduce the aerodynamic drag of the 6-car trainset up to 7.8%. The aerodynamic drag coefficient of each vehicle as well as the flow structures around the bogie system have also been examined to analyze the reason and mechanism of the drag reduction by bogie side fairing.
