Landuse information is used to plan land use, urban and environmental management as base data. And, demand for landuse information is rising due to ecological consideration. But existing method to extract landuse information from aerial photographs or field survey is consume a lot of time and cost. In urban area where the pattern of landuse is densely aggregated, a landuse information needs to be classified in detail for urban planning and management. Therefore this study aims to examine the method to extract landuse information in detail from 1:1,000 digital topographic data. For the purpose, the method was applied to a part of metropolitan Seoul. The results of study shows that extraction of landuse information except forest area is possible. Forest area is needed to describe smaller spatial unit. For the future, the method of describing forest area is improved it will be effectively applicable for the city maintenance.

Crown density, which is defined as the proportion of the forest floor concealed by tree crown, is important and useful information in various fields. Previous methods of measuring crown density have estimated crown density by interpreting aerial photographs or through a ground survey. These are time-consuming, labor-intensive, expensive and inconsistent approaches, as they involve a great deal of subjectivity and rely on the experience of the interpreter. In this study, the crown density of a forest in Korea was estimated using KOMPSAT-2 high-resolution satellite images. Using the image segmentation technique and stand information of the digital forest map, the forest area was divided into zones. The crown density for each segment was determined using the discriminant analysis method and the forest ratio method. The results showed that the accuracy of the discriminant analysis method was about 60%, while the accuracy of the forest ratio method was about 85%. The probability of extraction of candidate to update was verified by comparing the result with the digital forest map.
The Hapchon Dam, located upstream of the Hwang River, Korea, was constructed in December, 1988. Due to the lack of storage of water, the dam gate has not been operated during last ten years. Thus, a new ecosystem has been established at the downstream part of the dam. This is not a common phenomenon which can be found elsewhere in the country. The present study investigates the effect of flow regime change on the river morphology and vegetation cover in the downstream river reach after the dam construction. The analysis of flow regime is carried out, and the changes in bed elevation and in channel cross sections are examined. Site investigations including tree ring tests are also performed. The increase in the vegetation cover is estimated by comparing aerial photographs taken before and after dam construction.

To evaluate the accuracy of UAV photogrammetry for Hyangho coast, eastern coast of Korea, we conducted a field experiment wherein UAV photogrammetry test was repeated three times. Since the Haygho coast is located within a military reservation zone, it was necessary to obtain permission to gain access to the beach and to have sensitive aerial photographs showing military facilities inspected and cropped. The standard deviation of the UAV shooting position between the three tests was less than 1 m, but repeatability of footprint on the ground was low due to wind-driven variability of the UAV pose. Self-calibrating bundle adjustment(SCBA) of implementing non-metric camera calibration was failed in one test. In two tests, the vertical error was twice as large as the pixel size except for those areas that were subject to security inspection and cropping. Given the problems that can arise with regard to the repeatability of the shooting area as well as the possibility of failure with regard to SCBA, we strongly recommend that UAV photogrammetry in coastal areas needs to be repeated at least twice.
We carried out geometrical, kinematic, and geomechanical analyses on a lineament (the Imgok fault) near Gangneung, observed in ASTER images and aerial photographs, and field surveys. Earthquake focal mechanism solutions, used to estimate the present-day stress state, revealed that the direction of maximum compression is approximately N$70^{\circ}$E and that the stress condition is in favor of either strike-slip or reverse movement on the fault. The strike of the fault is not ideal for slip under the present-day stress field and thus the fault has a low slip tendency. However, the fault may be able to slip if the frictional coefficient (${\mu}$), representing the resistance of the fault to slip, is sufficiently low (e.g., ${\mu}$ < 0.25).

The present Namgang Dam had been completed in 2000, Salix subfragilis communities began to form in 2003 and their distribution area have been rapidly extended into nine times in 2010. In order to deduce correlation between water level and distribution of Salix subfragilis communities under this background in Namgang-dam reservoir, distribution characteristics and widening direction of Salix subfragilis communities have been analyzed by aerial photographs and water levels has been reviewed, also heights and ages of Salix subfragilis have been surveyed in field. The water levels of Namgang-dam related germination of Salix subfragilis have been analyzed in May and June from 2000 to 2010, mean water level, minimum water level and maximum water level were 37.87m, 36.99m and 38.82m, respectively. The oldest ages were 9-13 years, average diameters of breast height, average heights, average numbers and average crown area were respectively 3.9-8.8cm, 3.8-7.5m, $0.53/m^2$ and $0.98m^2/m^2$ in sites. Therefore, this results showed that the first recruitment of Salix subfragilis was in May 2002 when water levels have been maintained as 38.76-41.31m and the widening of Salix subfragilis communities was in May 2004 and 2005 when mean minimum water levels have been maintained as 38.76-41.31m. Salix subfragilis communities formed climax forest in Namgang-dam shore, this phenomena were different from the succession processes of Salix in rivers appeared landforming by deposition of sediment.

A new High Resolution Geometry or HRG imaging instrument is developed by CNES to be carried on-board SPOT 5. The HRG instrument offers a higher ground resolution than that of the HRV/HRVIR on SPOT 1 - 4 satellites. The field width of HRG is 60 km, same as SPOT constellation. With two HRG instruments, a maximum swath of 120 km at 5 m resolution can be achieved. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from satellite stereo images scores over conventional methods of DEM generation using topographic maps and aerial photographs. This global availability of satellite images allows for quicker data processing for an equivalent area. In this study, a HRG stereo images of SPOT 5 over JECHEON has been used with Leica Photogrammetry Suite OrthoBASE Pro tool for the creation of a digital elevation model (DEM). The extracted DEM was compared to the reference DEM obtained from the contours of digital topographic map.

Segmentation and organization of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data of the Earth's surface are difficult tasks because the captured LiDAR data are composed of irregularly distributed point clouds with lack of semantic information. The reason for this difficulty in processing LiDAR data is that the data provide huge amount of the spatial coordinates without topological and/or relational information among the points. This study introduces LiDAR data segmentation technique by utilizing histograms of the LiDAR height image data and analyzing roof shape for 3D reconstruction and visualization of the buildings. One of the advantages in utilizing LiDAR height image data is no registration required because the LiDAR data are geo-referenced and ortho-projected data. In consequence, measurements on the image provide absolute reference coordinates. The LiDAR image allows measurement of the initial building boundaries to estimate locations of the side walls and to form the planar surfaces which represent approximate building footprints. LiDAR points close to each side wall were grouped together then the least-square planar surface fitting with the segmented point clouds was performed to determine precise location of each wall of an building. Finally, roof shape analysis was performed by accumulated slopes along the profiles of the roof top. However, simulated LiDAR data were used for analyzing roof shape because buildings with various shapes of the roof do not exist in the test area. The proposed approach has been tested on the heavily built-up urban residential area. 3D digital vector map produced by digitizing complied aerial photographs was used to evaluate accuracy of the results. Experimental results show efficiency of the proposed methodology for 3D building reconstruction and large scale digital mapping especially for the urban area.

Lineament density maps can be used for the quantitative evaluation of relationship between lineaments and groundwater occurrence. There are several kinds of lineament density maps including lineament length density, lineament cross-points density, and lineament counts density maps. This paper reports the usefulness of the representative elementary area (REA) concept for lineament analysis. This concept refers to the area size of the unit circle to calculate the lineament density factors distributed within the circle: length, counts and cross-points counts. The circle is a unit circle that calculates the sum of the lineament length, lineament counts and the number of cross-points within it. The REA is needed to obtain the best representative lineament density map prior to the analysis of relation between lineaments and groundwater well yield or other groundwater characteristics. A basic lineament map for the Yongsangang-Seomjingang watershed of Korea, drawn from aerial black-and-white photographs of 1/20, 000 scale was used for demonstrating the concept. From this study, the conclusions were as follows: (1) the REA concept can be efficiently applied to the lineament density analysis and mapping, (2) for whole Yongsangang-Seomjingang watershed which has 6, 502 lineaments with an average lineament length of 3.3 km, the lower limits of each REA used for drawing the three density maps were about 1.77 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=750 m) for lineament length density, 7.07 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=1, 500 m) for lineament counts density, and 4.91 $\textrm{km}^2$ (r=1, 250 m) for lineament cross-points density, respectively, (3) the lineament densities are inversely proportional to the size of REA, and the REA can be calculated with this inversely linear regression model, (4) if the average lineament density values for the whole study area are known, the most accurate density maps can be drawn using the REAs obtained from each linear regression model, and (5) but critical attention should be paid to draw lineament counts density and lineament cross-points density maps because.
