  • The purpose of this study is to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas sample using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to GC analysis. The optimal HS-SPME conditions was CAR/PDMS fiber and 30 min absorprion time for the analysis of various VOCs. In optimal conditions, 80 VOCs could be detected within 1 ppbv and even less than 0.0005 ppbv especially in the case of BTEX. However, fiber reproducibility on adsorption efficiency was 1~9.2% (between the same fiber) and 5.9~13.5% (between the other fiber). We successfully determined 35 VOCs in landfill gas with this method and found that VOCs of high concentration are emitting from vent pipe of closed/open landfill site under the HS-SPME conditions. This method may apply to VOCs/odor determination from various atmospheric environmental samples as well as landfills.

  • The effects of sulfur on the catalytic reaction between CO and NO on polycrystalline Pt surface, which is very important in the development of catalyst for automobile exhaust gas control, have been studied using thermal desorption spectrometry(TDS) under ultra-high vacuum(UHV) conditions. Sulfur weakened both the adsorptions of CO and NO by direct site blocking and indirect electronic effect. S(a) desorbing below 800 K gave little effect on reaction activity whereas S(a) desorbing above 800 K, which adsorbs as an atomic state, gave much effect on it. The adsorbed sulfur existed on the surface of platinum in the form of islands, and also reduced the adsorption energies of adsorbates by the long-ranged electronic effect. The platinum catalyst in the reaction between CO and NO was poisoned selectively by S(a), poisoning firstly the active sites of this reaction.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the propertis, acidity and chemical compositions of the snowfall in the bare land and Idlest stand. The research sites of this study are the Daegwalyung (a high hill) and Woongyori in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon province. The results of this study are as follows: The snowfall pH showed large changes when the snowfall was small. The more snow falls, the smaller changes of the pH are narrow. According to the local conditions, it means that the acid deposition changed over adsorption ratio in suspended matters of the atmosphere. Changes of the ion concentrations for the snowfall in the forest stand showed a thendency to increase. Chemical composition of the snowfall for each sampling site showed that the ion concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$and anions had higher value than other ions.s.

  • Recently, the control of pore-characteristics of nano-porous materials has been studied extensively because of their unique applications, which includes size-selective separation, gas adsorption/storage, heterogeneous catalysis, etc. The most widely adopted techniques for controlling pore characteristics include the utilization of pillar effect by metal oxide and of templates such as zeolites. More recently, coordination polymers constructed by transition metal ions and bridging organic ligands have afforded new types of nano-porous materials, porous metal-organic framework(porous MOF), with high degree and uniformity of porosity. The pore characteristics of these porous MOFs can be designed by controlling the coordination number and geometry of selected metal, e.g transition metal and rare-earth metal, and the size, rigidity, and coordination site of ligand. The synthesis of porous MOF by the assembly of metal ions with di-, tri-, and poly-topic N-bound organic linkers such as 4,4'-bipyridine(BPY) or multidentate linkers such as carboxylates, which allow for the formation of more rigid frameworks due to their ability to aggregate metal ions into M-O-C cluster, have been reported. Other porous MOF from co-ligand system or the ligand with both C-O and C-N type linkage can afford to control the shape and size of pores. Furthermore, for the rigidity and thermal stability of porous MOF, ring-type ligand such as porphyrin derivatives and ligands with ability of secondary bonding such as hydrogen and ionic bonding have been studied.

  • An experimental removal of dissolved uranium (U) exsiting as uranyl ion (${UO_2}^{2+}$) was carried out using Shewanella p., iron-reducing bacterium. By the microbial reductive reaction, initial U concentration ($50{\mu}M$) was constantly decreased, and most U were removed from solution after 2 weeks. Major mechanism that U was removed from the solution was adsorption, precipitation and mineralization on the microbe surface. Under the transmission electron microscopy, the U adsorbed on the microbe was observed as being crystallized and eventually enlarged to several ${\mu}m$ sizes of minerals by combining with individual microbes and organic exudates. It seems that such U growth and mineralization on the microbial surface could affect the U behavior in a radioactive waste disposal site. Thus, the biogechemical reaction of metal-reducing bacteria observed in this experiment could give an affirmative measure that the microbial activity may retard U movement in subsurface environment.

  • Coal and gas outburst is a serious dynamic disaster that occurs during coal mining and threatens the lives of coal miners. Currently, coal and gas outburst is commonly predicted using single indicator and its critical value. However, single indicator is unable to fully reflect all of the factors impacting outburst risk and has poor prediction accuracy. Therefore, a more accurate prediction method is necessary. In this work, we first analyzed on-site impacting factors and precursors of coal and gas outburst; then, we constructed a Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA) index system using the gas adsorption index of drilling cutting ${\Delta}h_2$, the drilling cutting weight S, the initial velocity of gas emission from borehole q, the thickness of soft coal h, and the maximum ratio of post-blasting gas emission peak to pre-blasting gas emission $B_{max}$; finally, we studied an FDA-based multiple indicators discriminant model of coal and gas outburst, and applied the discriminant model to predict coal and gas outburst. The results showed that the discriminant model has 100% prediction accuracy, even when some conventional indexes are lower than the warning criteria. The FDA method has a broad application prospects in coal and gas outburst prediction.

  • In this study, the effect of $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts on the CO oxidation reaction at room temperature was investigated using various $TiO_2$ supports with different physical properties to compare and evaluate $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts. Physicochemical properties of the catalyst were alanyzed using XPS, CO-chemisorption, BET, and CO-TPD. As a result, when the active particle diameter was smaller, while the metal dispersion and surface area were larger, the CO room temperature oxidation reaction was better. These physical properties increased the number of active sites, causing the target material to increase the adsorption amount of CO. In addition, when the $O_2$-consumption increased, the CO-room temperature oxidation reaction activity increased due to the excellent oxygen-transferring ability.

  • Among the non-precious metal catalysts, iron-nitrogen doped carbon (Fe-N/C) catalysts have been recognized as the most promising candidates for an alternative to Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline and acidic conditions. In this study, the nano replication method using mesoporous silica, which features tunable primary particle sizes and shape, is employed to prepare the mesoporous Fe-N/C catalysts with different shapes. Platelet SBA-15, irregular KIT-6, and spherical silica particle (SSP) were selected as a template to generate three different kinds of shapes of the mesoporous Fe-N/C catalyst. Physicochemical properties of mesoporous Fe-N/C catalysts are characterized by using small-angle X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy images. According to the electrochemical evaluation, there is no morphological preference of mesoporous Fe-N/C catalysts toward the ORR activity with half-cell configuration under alkaline electrolyte. By implementing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of Fe and N atoms in the mesoporous Fe-N/C catalysts, it is possible to verify that the activity towards ORR highly depends on the portions of "Fe-N" species in the catalysts regardless of the shape of catalysts. It was suggested that active site distribution in the Fe-N/C is one important factor towards ORR activity.

  • Wastewater Based Epidemiology (WBE) provides useful information not only on the use of illegal drugs in the community, but also on the presence of hygiene and health products and infectious pathogens in sewage facilities. As a consequence of the SARS-CoV-19 virus epidemic in 2019, monitoring the status of the infection is of utmost importance. SARS-CoV-19 was also detected in sewage, and the number and trend of infections in the community suggest that the application of the WBE system would be useful and appropriate. This study introduces a pre-treatment concentration method including viruses in sewage samples. A total of seven methods which were subdivided into methods for adsorption-extraction, ultra-filtration, PEG precipitation, and ultra-centrifugation, and the results for analyzing the recovery rates were included. Meanwhile, it is necessary to pay attention to rapid detection technologies which analyze infectious pathogens at the site of sewage facilities. These can include ELISA, FTIR, SERS, and biosensor based on the detection principle, and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each were summarized herein. If rapid detection technologies and accurate quantitative analyses are further developed, the use of sewage mechanics in response to pandemic viruses is expected to expand further.

  • In this study, $ATiO_3$ (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) perovskite, which is the widely known for non $TiO_2$ photocatalysts, were synthesized using sol-gel method. And Ni was added at the A site of $ATiO_3$ by using that it is easy to incorporate. The physicochemical characteristics of the obtained $ATiO_3$ and Ni-$ATiO_3$ particles were confirmed using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), the $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The $H_2$ was produced using the photolysis of MeOH. Using the Ni-$ATiO_3$ photocatalysts, $H_2$ production was higher than using the $ATiO_3$ photocatalysts. Especially, $273.84mmolg^{-1}$ $H_2$ was produced after 24 h reaction over the Ni-$SrTiO_3$. Also in the water (0.1 M KOH) with the Ni-$SrTiO_3$, $H_2$ production was $961.51mmolg^{-1}$ after 24 h reaction.
