Adsorption of Safranin using granular activated carbon from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out as a function of adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Based on an estimated Langmuir separation factor, $R_L=0.183{\sim}0.254$ and a Freundlich separation factor, 1/n = 0.518~0.547, this process could be employed as an effective treatment method. Adsorption data were also modeled using the pseudo-first and second-order kinetic equations. It was shown that the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation could best describe the adsorption kinetics. The negative Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G=-3.688{\sim}-7.220kJ/mol$) and positive enthalpy (${\Delta}H=33.126kJ/mol$) indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic.

We investigated the individual biosorption removal of lead, copper, and nickel ions from aqueous solutions using Chara sp. algae powder in a batch mode. The impact of several parameters, such as initial concentration of the metal ions, contacting time, sorbent dose, and pH on the removal efficiency, was investigated. The maximum removal efficiency at optimum conditions was found to be 98% for Pb(II) at pH = 4, 90% for Cu(II) at pH = 5, and 80% for Ni(II) at pH = 5. The isotherm study was done under the optimum conditions for each metal by applying the experimental results onto the well-known Freundlich and Langmuir models. The results show that the Langmuir is better in describing the isotherm adsorption of Pb(II) and Ni(II), while the Freundlich is a better fit in the case of Cu(II). Similarly, a kinetic study was performed by using the pseudo-first and second-order equations. Our results show that the pseudo-second-order is better in representing the kinetic adsorption of the three metal ions.
Adsorption of brilliant blue FCF dye using coal based the granular activated carbon from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models. The results indicate that Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated Freundlich constant (1/n = 0.129~0.212), this process could be employed as an effective treatment method. Adsorption data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations. It was shown that the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation could describe well the adsorption kinetics. The negative Gibbs free energy value (-4.81~-10.33 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy value (+78.59 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process.
Zeolite material having XRD peaks of Na-A zeolite in the 2θ range of 7.18 to 34.18 can be synthesized from the waste catalyst using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The adsorption rate of Mn ions by a commercial Na-A zeolite and the synthesized zeolitic material increased as the adsorption temperature increased in the range of 10 ~ 40℃. The adsorption of Mn ion were very rapid in the first 30 min and then reached to the equilibrium state after approximately 60 min. The adsorption kinetics of Mn ions by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material were found to be well fitted to the pseudo-2nd order kinetic model. Equilibrium data by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material fit the Langmuir, Koble-Corrigan, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models well rather than Freundlich isotherm model. The removal capacity of the Mn ions by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material obtained from the Langmuir model was 135.2 mg/g and 128.9 mg/g at 30℃, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Mn ions by the synthesized zeolitic material was almost similar to that of commercial Na-A zeolite. The synthesized zeolitic material could be applied as an economically feasible commercial adsorbent.
The adsorption characteristics of the major tar compound, acenaphthene, derived from Taxus chinensis by the commercial adsorbent Sylopute were investigated using different parameters such as initial acenaphthene concentration, adsorption temperature, and contact time. Out of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models, adsorption data were best described by Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption kinetics was evaluated by pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The pseudo-second-order model was found to explain the adsorption kinetics most effectively. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the feasibility, nonspontaneity and exothermic nature of adsorption. In addition, the isosteric heat of adsorption was independent of surface loading indicating the Sylopute used as an energetically homogeneous surface.

Removal characteristics of Mn and Co was studied from the contaminated solutions via surface reaction with various calcium carbonate (calcite). Synthetic calcium carbonates which has different surface morphology as well as surface areas were prepared by a spontaneous precipitation method and used. Mn and Co removal behavior by the different solid surface demonstrate characteristic sorption behaviors depend on the type of calcite used, such as surface area or surface morphology. Calcium carbonate crystals (mostly calcite) which exhibit complicated surface morphology (c-type) shows strong sorption affinity for Mn and Co removal via sorption than on the a-type or b-type calcite crystals of less complicated surfaces. The applicability of two kinetic models, the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation and the Elovich kinetic model was examined on these sorption behavior. Elovich kinetic model was found more suitable to explain the very early stage adsorption kinetics, while the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation was successfully fitted for the adsorption kinetics after 50 hours.
The adsorption characteristics of propineb pesticide onto activated carbon has been investigated for the adsorption in aqueous solution with respect to initial concentration, contact time and temperature in batch experiment. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to described the equilibrium isotherms and isotherm constants were also determined. The Freundlich model agrees with experimental data well. slope of isotherm line indicate that activated carbon could be employed as effective treatment for removal of propineb. The pseudo first order, pseudo second order kinetic models were use to describe the kinetic data and rate constants were evaluated. The adsorption process followed a pseudo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant($k_2$) decreased with increasing initial concentration of propineb. The activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The estimated values for change of free energy were -7.28, -8.27 and -11.66 kJ/mol over activated carbon at 298, 308 and 318 K, respectively. The results indicated toward a spontaneous process. The positive value for change of enthalpy, 54.46 kJ/mol, found that the adsorption of propineb on activated carbon is an endothermic process.
The possibility of using carica papaya leaf powder for removal of copper from wastewater as a low cost adsorbent was explored. Different parameters that affect the adsorption process like initial concentration of metal ion, time of contact, adsorbent quantity and pH were evaluated and the outcome of the study was tested using adsorption isotherm models. A maximum of 90%-94.1% copper removal was possible from wastewater having low concentration of the metal using papaya leaf powder under optimum conditions by conducting experimental studies. The biosorption of copper ion was influenced by pH and outcome of experimental results indicate the optimum pH as 7.0 for maximum copper removal. Copper distribution between the solid and liquid phases in batch studies was described by isotherms like Langmuir adsorption and Freundlich models. The adsorption process was better represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of copper was measured to be 24.51 mg/g through the Langmuir model. Pseudo-second order rate equation was better suited for the adsorption process. A dynamic mode study was also conducted to analyse the ability of papaya leaf powder to remove copper (II) ions from aqueous solution and the breakthrough curve was described by an S profile. Present study revealed that papaya leaf powder can be used for the removal of copper from the wastewater and low cost water treatment techniques can be developed using this adsorbent.
Waste glass disposal causes environmental problems in the cities. To find a suitable green environmental solution for this problem low cost adsorbent in this study was prepared from waste glass. An effective new green adsorbent was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of waste glass (WG), followed by acidic activation of its surface by HCl (WGP). The prepared adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and BET surface measurement. The developed adsorbent was used for the removal of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) from well water. Batch experiments were conducted to test the ability of the prepared adsorbent for the removal of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn from well water. The experiments of the heavy metals adsorption by adsorbent (WGP) were performed at different metal ion concentrations, solution pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and kinetic models were used to verify the adsorption performance. The results indicated high removal efficiencies (99-100%) for all the studied heavy metals at pH 7 at constant contact time of 2 h. The data obtained from adsorption isotherms of metal ions at different time fitted well to linear form of the Langmuir sorption equation, and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Application of the resulted conditions on well water demonstrated that the modified waste glass adsorbent successfully adsorbed heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) from well water.
The main objective of this study is to evaluate adsorptive removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution using pumice powder. The effects of pH, adsorption time, agitation speed, adsorbent dose, and dye concentrations on dye adsorption were investigated. Process kinetics and isotherm model constants were determined accordingly. The results showed that adsorbent dose, dye concentration and agitation speed are the important parameters on dye adsorption and the removal of MB did not significantly change by varying pH. A total adsorption process time of 60 min was observed to be sufficient to effectively remove 50 mg/L MB concentration. The MB adsorption data obeyed both pseudo first order and second order kinetic models. Adsorption of MB by pumice fitted well both Langmiur and Freundlich isotherms ($R^2{\geq}0.9700$), except for 150 rpm agitation speed that system fitted only Langmiur isotherm. The results of this study emphasize that pumice powder can be used as a low cost and effective adsorbent for dye removal.
