Carbon neutrality requires carbon dioxide reduction technology and alternative green energy sources. Palygorskite is a clay mineral with a ribbon structure and possess a large surface area due to the nanoscale pore size. The clay mineral has been proposed as a potential material to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and possibly to store eco-friendly hydrogen gas (H2). We report our preliminary results of grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations that investigated the adsorption isotherms and mechanisms of CO2 and H2 into palygorskite nanopores at room temperature. As the chemical potential of gas increased, the adsorbed amount of CO2 or H2 within the palygorskite nanopores increased. Compared to CO2, injection of H2 into palygorskite required higher energy. The mean squared displacement within palygorskite nanopores was much higher for H2 than for CO2, which is consistent with experiments. Our simulations found that CO2 molecules were arranged in a row in the nanopores, while H2 molecules showed highly disordered arrangement. This simulation method is promising for finding Earth materials suitable for CO2 capture and H2 storage and also expected to contribute to fundamental understanding of fluid-mineral interactions in the geological underground.
This study was conducted to investigate the adsorption characteristics, distribution coefficients, and movement of alachlor(2-chloro-2', 6'-dimethyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetanilide) and chlorothalonil(tetrachloroisophthalonitrile) for the 3 soils sampled from major soil groups in Cheju Island. Namwon, Jeju, and Mureng soils used in this study were classified as black volcanic ash soil, dark brown volcanic ash soil and dark brown nonvolcanic soil, respectively. Organic carbon content and CEC of Namwon soil were very high and those of Mureung soil were very low. Linear and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were the best to fit the adsorption of alachlor and chlorothalonil in the soils. K value, Freundlich coefficient, of alachlor for Namwon soil was 21.38, being 5.4 and 97.2 times higher than that for Jeju and Mureung soils respectively. The values of chlorothalonil for the soils were similar to those of alachlor but were much higher than them. When Mureung, Jeju and Namwon soil columns were leached with a solution containing 10.25 mg/l of alachlor and 1.50 mg/l of chlorothalonil, alachlor was first detected at 0.265, 0.47, and 1.86 pore volume (PV) and chlorothalonil was 3.71, 4.7 and 17.5 PV, respectively. The pore volumes at $C/C_o=1$ of alachlor in the leachates from Mureung, Jeju and Namwon soil columns were 1.1, 3.7 and 6.6 PV and those at $C/C_o=0.2$ of chlorothalonil were 7.5, 8.5 and 27.5, respectively. This means that the deceasing order of the mobility of the chemicals in soils was Mureung soil>Jeju soil${\gg}$Namwon soil. The pore volumes detecting $C/C_o=0.5$ of alachlor and $C/C_o=0.05$ of chlorothalonil in leachate were positively correlated with the distribution coefficients for the soils.

Adsorption onto the surfaces of solid particles is a well known phenomenon that causes the retardation effect of heavy metals in soils. For adequate remediation of soil and groundwater contamination, it is important to investigate the mobility of heavy metals that largely depends on pH conditions in the soil water since adsorption of heavy metals is pH-dependent. In this study, we investigated the transport of Zn ion under various pH conditions in a sandy soil by conducting batch and column tests. The batch test was performed using the standard procedure of equilibrating fine fractions collected from the soil with eleven different initial $ZnCl_2$ concentrations, and analysis of Zn ion in the equilibrated solutions using ICP-AES. The column test consisted of monitoring the concentrations of soil solutions exiting the soil column with time known as a breakthrough curve (BTC). We injected respectively $ZnCl_2$ and KCl solutions with the concentration of 10 g/L as a tracer in a square pulse type under three different pH conditions (7.7, 5.8, 4.1) and monitored the flux concentration at the exit boundary using an EC meter and ICP-AES. The resident concentration was also monitored at the 10cm-depth by Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). The results of batch test showed that ion exchange process between Zn and other cations (Ca, Mg) was predominant. The retardation coefficients obtained from adsorption isotherms (Linear, Freundlich, Langmuir) resulted in the various values ranging from 1.2 to 614.1. No retardation effect but ion exchange was found for the BTCs under all pH conditions. This can be explained by the absence of other cations to desorb Zn ion from soil exchange sites under the conditions of ETC experiment imposing blank water as leachate in steady-state flow. As pH decreased, the peak concentration of Zn increased due to the competition of Zn with hydrogen ions ($H^+$) and the concentrations of other cations decreased. The peak concentration of Zn was increased by 12.7 times as pH decreased from 7.7 to 4.1.

Mesoporous tin oxide (meso-$SnO_2$) with 5 nm mesopore and well-aligned $SnO_2$ nanowire-bundles with 5~7 nm diameters were prepared by template synthesis method. In addition to meso-$SnO_2$, meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$, which has almost the same structure as meso-$SnO_2$ including $SiO_2$ used as the template were prepared by the modification of template synthesis. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy observed structures of meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$. Although the meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ showed some positive evidences to suppress the volume change of meso-$SnO_2$ through cyclic voltammogram, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and voltage profiles during cycling, its cycle life was not improved highly to address modified structural effects. Thus, further study might be done to control the nanostructure of meso-$SnO_2$/$SiO_2$ for enhanced cycle performance.
IgY (Immunoglobulin Yolk) is a specific antibody in egg yolk, and it protects human body from virus and antigen. There are a lot of egg yolk components such as lipoprotein and protein. To separate IgY, HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and precipitation were used in a batch mode and SMB (Simulated Moving Bed) was adopted for continuous purification of yolk proteins. IgY and other proteins in yolk were separated by using three-zone and four-zone SMB chromatography. Before performing SMB experiments, batch chromatography simulation parameters and adsorption isotherms were obtained. The parameters of batch chromatography were used to simulate SMB using Aspen chromatography. To compare three-zone and four-zone SMB chromatography, simulations in $m_2-m_3$ plane on the triangle theory were carried out. In terms of concentration and purity of both IgY and other lipoproteins, 3-zone SMB process is considered as ideal at the vertex of triangle ($m_2$, $m_3$=0.1, 1.1). 4-zone SMB yields the highest IgY purity at the coordinate ($m_2$, $m_3$=0.06, 0.5), which is the pure raffinate region. In 3-zone SMB without recycle, other lipoproteins in extract are largely affected in purity by small shift from the vertex of triangle ($m_2$, $m_3$=0.1, 1.1).
The characteristics of heavy metal biosorption on the seaweeds were investigated to develop a biological treatment technology for wastewater polluted with heavy metals. The heavy metal biosorption on seaweeds ranked in the tallowing order: U. pinnatifida$\geq$E. stolonifera$\geq$Laminaria sp.>G. amansii. The Pb was biosorbed in the range of $93{\sim}99%$, and the Cu and Cd were biosorbed in the range of $70{\sim}80%$ at the concentration of the heavy metal of $100mg/{\ell}$ respectively. The seaweed which was pretreated with $CaCl_2$ solution improved the biosorption of the heavy metals. The temperature and pH didn't affect the biosorption of heavy metals. The Langmuir isotherm reasonably fit the data of heavy metal biosorption compared to the Freundlich isotherm. The affinity of metals on the biosorption ranked in the following order: Pb>Zn>Cu>Cd. The biosorption efficiency of the heavy metals on the U. pinnatifida decreased in the multi-component rather than the single component. The heavy metals adsorbed on the U. pinnatifida were recovered using 0.3%-NTA. U. pinnatifida among the seaweed used in this work showed the best performance for the biosorption of the heavy metals.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the catalytic potential of the porous material prepared from water treatment sludge. The textural properties of the catalyst were studied using $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The pellet-type catalyst prepared using water treatment sludge is determined to be a material that contains mesopores as well as micropores. The specific surface area of the catalyst is $157m^2/g$. Acidic characteristics of the catalyst are analyzed by temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. 2-Butanol dehydration reaction was carried out in a fixed bed catalytic reactor. Yields of 1-butene, trans-2-butene, and cis-2-butene at $350^{\circ}C$ were 25.6 wt%, 19.2 wt%, and 29.9 wt%, respectively. This catalytic activity of the catalyst based on water treatment sludge in 2-butanol dehydration is due to the acid sites composed of Bronsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites. It was confirmed that the catalyst based on water treatment sludge can be utilized to produce $C_4$ olefin through butanol dehydration.
The main objective of this study was to examine the removal properties of Cu from water by inflated vermiculites. The component of vermiculites was analyzed by XRF and the concentration of Copper ion was measured by UV-VIS. Serial batch Kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for Cu in aqueous solutions. The result shows that removal rate, $K_{obs}$, of Cu are 0.73, 1.52, and 1.71 for initial pH 3, pH 4, pH 5, respectively, and are 3.19, 1.90, and 0.73 for the initial concentration of $1mg\;L^{-1}$, $5mg\;L^{-1}$, $10mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. It leads to the conclusion that the removal rates are inversely proportional to the initial Cu concentration and are increased proportionally to the initial pHs. Finally, Sorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. As a result, Langmuir and Freundlich models were well fitted to batch isotherm data with good values of the determination coefficient. but the determination coefficient value for the Freundlich model fit was slightly higher than that of Langmuir model (0.965 for the Freundlich model and 0.936 for the Langmuir model). Using the Langmuir model, the maximum sorption capacity ($Q_{max}$), Freundlich partition coefficient, and the numerical value of n wrer estimated as $1,250mg\;kg^{-1}$, $635.1L\;kg^{-1}$ and 1.69, respectively. These results show that the inflated vermiculites could be used as an excellent adsorbent for copper contained in various types of aqueous solutions.
The silica containing carbon ($C-SiO_2$) membranes were fabricated using poly(imide siloxane)(Si-PI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) blended polymer. The characteristics of porous carbon structures prepared by the pyrolysis of polymer blends were related with the micro-phase separation behaviors of the two polymers. The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of the mixed polymer blends of Si-PI and PVP were observed with a single $T_g$ using differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, the nitrogen adsorption isotherms of the $C-SiO_2$ membranes were investigated to define the characteristics of porous carbon structures. The $C-SiO_2$ membranes derived from Si-PI/PVP showed the type IV isotherm and possessed the hysteresis loop, which was associated with the mesoporous carbon structures. For the molecular sieving probe, the $C-SiO_2$ membranes were prepared with the ratio of Si-PI/PVP and the pyrolysis conditions, such as the pyrolysis temperature and the isothermal times. Consequently, the $C-SiO_2$ membranes prepared by the pyrolysis of Si-PI/PVP at $550^{\circ}C$ with the isothermal time of 120 min showed the $O_2$ permeability of 820 Barrer ($1{\times}10^{-10}cm^3(STP)cm/cm^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}cmHg$) and $O_2/N_2$ selectivity of 14.

In this work, tungsten oxide ($WO_x$) supported on SBA-15 (mesoporous silica) were prepared and applied for oxidative desulfurization of sulfur compounds in marine diesel containing about 230 ppmw of sulfur concentration. Prepared catalysts were examined by two steps; at first step, oxidation reaction carried out with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and then the oxidized sulfur compounds were extracted by acetonitrile as solvent. Catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms. Tungsten oxide exists as monoclinic crystal system on SBA-15 and over about 10 wt% of the $WO_x$ loading took the form of multi-layers on SBA-15. The 13 wt% $WO_x$/SBA-15 catalyst exhibite highest activity, achieving about 76.3% sulfur removal in the reaction conditions, such as catalyst amount of 0.1 g, reaction temperature at $90^{\circ}C$, reaction time for 3 h and O/S molar ratio of 10. One time oxidation reaction is enough oxidize the sulfur compounds in marine diesel completely. The repetition experiment of extraction process indicated that sulfur removal could reach 94.4% after 5 times.
